Debate on four issues from the perspective of your assigned character.

Kissinger will now count you off 1,2,31’s = Judges (impartial)

They will decide who won each debate.2’s = Jefferson 3’s = Hamilton

When Kissinger shows you the prompt, you will begin a 2 min. debate on a specific issue

from each perspective. Winner of Rock, Paper, Scissors will start debate.

After the debate judges make decision on the winner.

Review of Views on the Issues Hamilton/Federalists• Favored a strong national government. Supported a loose construction of the

Constitution. A broad interpretation, Congress has powers beyond those specifically given in the Constitution.

• Favored using the government’s power to support business, manufacturing and trade. • A strong national bank that would collect taxes and keep funds safe. It would print

money backed by the government, it would make loans to businesspeople. • Alarmed by violence of the French Revolution, favored Great Britain in its war with

France.

Jefferson/Republicans• Strong states’ rights and an economy based on agriculture. “Those who labor the earth

are the chosen people.”• Supported a strict construction of the Constitution. Congress has only those powers

specifically given in the Constitution. Democracy over any other form of government. Best government=the government that governs the least, limited powers.

• National bank unconstitutional, designed to encourage growth of businesses and manufacturing. Bank will not make loans to farmers to buy land.

• They saw the French Revolution as a step toward democracy and attacked the Federalists support for Great Britain.

1st Federalists yell!“Born to rule, we know what we need! With a strong central government, we will succeed!”

2nd Republicans yell!“We know what we need from day to day! Don’t try to rule us from far away!”

This will be a talk-it-out debate
