SIMAI 2016
Politecnico di Milano, September 13th-16th 2016
The role of SIMAI (Italian Society of Industrial and Applied Mathematics) is to promote mathematical research in industrial and applied science, offering a view of applied mathematics that can be transferred from academia to industry. The aim of the Biannual Congress of SIMAI is to bring together researchers and professionals from academia and industry who are active in the study of mathematical and numerical models as well as their application to industrial and in general real life problems; to stimulate interdisciplinary research in applied mathematics and to foster interactions of the scientific community with industry. The official language of the Congress is English.
On Thursday the 15th in the afternoon this edition of the Congress will host a special session (in Italian) dedicated to the teaching of mathematics as a contribution of SIMAI to raise awareness on theapplications of mathematics in secondary schools.

Will Schilders: “Challenges in Computational and Data Science”Chairperson: Luca Formaggia
After obtaining his degree in 1978 he completed his PhD in Numerical Analysis at Trinity College in 1980 with a work on numerical methods for problems with boundary layers that was eventually published as a book. He then worked in the Mathematical Software group of Philips Research giving several notable contributions to the field of numerical simulation of electronic circuits, and collaborated to the development of mixed finite elements for semiconductor devices. In 2006 he moved to NXP Semiconductors where he continued his research for the electronics industry until 2010. In the meantime he was appointed as Professor in Scientific Computing for Industry at Eindhoven University of Technology, where he has supervised the activity of numerous MsC and PhD students. In 2010 he became the executive director of PWN, a newly started platform for mathematics. He participated to several European initiatives for mathematics in industry and in 2010-2011 he acted as president of ECMI. Since 2016 he is the president of EU-MATHS-IN, a service network for mathematics in industry and innovation. His research interests currently span from numerical techniques for the solution of indefinite linear systems to model order reduction.
After obtaining a degree in Mathematics in 1972 at the University of Pavia he worked as Assistant professor of Mathematical Physics and Rational Mechanics, and was appointed full professor in 1987, working at the University of Ferrara until 1992, and in the University of Pavia since 1993. He has made notable contributions to the mathematical aspects of Boltzmann equation and of Enskog equation in kinetic theory of rarefied gases. He collaborated, among others, with the Field medalists Pierre-Louis Lions, and Cedric Villani, and with Peter Markowich, who was honoured of the Wittgenstein Award in 2000. During the five-years period 1997-2001 he has coordinated one of the two Italian teams of the European TMR project “Asymptotic Methods in Kinetic Theory”. In 2008 she was granted an ERC Starting grant, She received the ICIAM Collatz prize in 2015 and she was awarded an ERC Advanced grant in 2016. She was invited speaker at a number of international conferences, among which ICM (2014, Seoul, Korea), GAMM (Erlangen, Germany, 2014) and MAFELAP (Brunel, UK,2013) and gave a semi-plenary lecture at ECCOMAS (Vienna 2012 and Crete 2016) and a plenary talk at ICIAM (Beijing, China, 2015). She is member of the Academia Europaea. Her work spans several aspects of the numerical analysis of partial differential equations: isogeometric analysis, fully compatible discretization of PDEs, linear and non linear elasticity, contact mechanics, integral equations on non-smooth manifolds, functional theory for Maxwell equations in non-smooth domains, finite element techniques for Maxwell equations, non-conforming domain decomposition methods, asymptotic analysis, stabilization techniques for finite element discretizations.

He started working at IBM in 1980 as a simple maintenance technician. Yet, during his professional career he reached positions of increasing responsibility and in June 2004 was appointed Chairman and CEO of IBM Italy. In October 2007, he left this position to accept a new challenge alongside Giampaolo Dallara at the head of Dallara Automobili, as partner and CEO & General Manager. Since November 2007, he is the Director of the “Executive Master in Technology and Innovation Management” at ALMA Graduate School of University of Bologna. Since April 2008 he has been a member of the Board of Directors and the Executive Committee of Barilla SpA, and, since May 2012, he is the Lead Indipendent Director of the Board of Brunello Cucinelli Spa. In 2004 the University of Parma awarded him a Honorary Degree in Computer Engineering for his expertise in business management and his continuous commitment to the technological development of the territory. For years he has been a member of the major Italian industrial associations. In particular, he is part of the “Innovation and Research” confederate Technical Committee and the “Innovative and Technological Services” Council of Confindustria. He is a member of the Board of the “Council of Relationship Italy and USA” and of the Aspen Institute Italy. On June 2006 he received from President Ciampi the honour of Knight of Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic.
After obtaining a degree in Mathematics in 1975 at the University of Pavia, he started his scientific career at the Institute for Numerical Analisys of CNR in Pavia. In 1986 he was appointed full professor for Numerical Analisys at the Università Cattolica di Brescia. In 1989 he moved to Politecnico di Milano, where he worked until 2013 (since then he is on leave of absence). He has been full professor of Mathematics at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, and, since 1998, he is director of the Chair of Modelling and Scientific Computing at EPFL (Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne). In 2002 he founded MOX, the Laboratory of Modelling and Scientific Computing of Politecnico di Milano, which now counts more than 50 senior and junior researchers. He is the president of MOXOFF, a spin-off of Politecnico di Milano founded in 2010. In 2008 he has been granted the Advanced ERC grant MathCard on the numerical simulation of the cardiovascular system and two ERC PoC (Proof of Concept) Grants. He is a corresponding member of the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei, member of the European Academy of Sciences, of Academia Europaea, and of the Istituto Lombardo di Scienze e Lettere. His research focuses on numerical analysis, scientific computing and approximation of PDEs with applications ranging from aerospace, to geophysics, biology and medicine, and the use of mathematical models for sports.
