THE SHIELDKnights of Columbus Martin Council 6241
NOVEMBER 2016November is the month of Thanksgiving. Let’s stop for a moment, be thankful for living in this great
country of ours and to pray for our Christian brothers and sisters being crucified for their faith in the
Middle East. Pope Francis asked for prayers for those “who are being persecuted, exiled, killed,
decapitated for the sole reason that they are Christian”. He added “They are our martyrs of today and they
are so many, we could say that they are more numerous than in the early centuries.” So, pray for them and
the unborn.
November has many important events. Polish Night, Slam Breakfast, Thanksgiving Dinner for the Needy
and of course our Memorial Mass on Thanksgiving Eve. This Mass is for all will be held at the council
and all are welcomed and encouraged to attend.
One of the most important events from mid-October thru early November is the return of our brothers
from up north. It’s great to see them and renew old friendships. Welcome back brothers.
Recruiting as of this writing is not going as well as it could. We are far behind in our recruiting goals and
I encourage you to do your best to bring in a new brother. The more active brothers we have the more we
can do to help our parishes and communities. If you know someone who has interest in becoming a
Knight and you don’t know how to approach him let one of the council officers know and they will
contact the individual. An Admission degree is scheduled for November and we anticipate 5 strangers to
become members. This helps but we have a long way to go.
Also after November’s Council meeting there will be a short Columbian Club meeting. New By-Laws
need approval as well as the election of three directors. The Columbian Club has done an outstanding job
under the leadership of Brother Jim Tonra. We have new carpeting in the main ballroom, new entrance
steps and a new grill in the kitchen.
All is well with the council – God is good – and I wish all my Brothers and Sisters Health, Wealth and
Love
God Bless, Frank Polis

ANNUAL MEMORIAL MASS THANKSGIVING EVE NOV 23 7PM
FOR ALL DECEASED KNIGHTS & COLUMBIETTES
"Mathew" interrupted our schedule of meetings, so we continue to November 9th, 2016 as our first meeting
for the year. We will have our installation of officers at 10am, (officiate TBA), followed by our audit and
our regular meeting will start at 1pm. Please remember our "baby shower", last year we were able to spread
to three organizations, hope to have more this year. Thank you in advance.
Our Christmas party for the Challenger School, has been confirmed, to be held at our facility at our December 14th
meeting. We will need help wrapping presents for the event. Santa and Mrs. Claus have "promised" to fit us in their busy
schedule.
We are still in the progress of collecting for our Fashion Show on Feb. 18th, please help and let us know if you can make
a basket as your donation or can donate articles to have us make up a basket. We hope to go over the 19 baskets we had
last year. If you plan to do your own basket, it must be wrapped in "Clear" cellophane and a list of articles is necessary for
our "sign maker" to label the baskets.
We hosted the Regional meeting at the club on October 1, 2016, for 180 members. Our members who were there to help
and participate, Denise Bonadeo, Terri Fox, Yolie Rollando, Joan Cannell, Millie Capel, Donna Kotula, Carole
Kuhlmeier, Lucille Massar, Mary Nowacki, Margaret Tuzzio, Wilma Wilhelm, Ceil Crawford, Barbara Guido and our
DD Vilma Stevenson. St. Bernadette & St. Elizabeth Seton organized the breakfast as our auxiliary set up the room,
served the lunch and cleaned up. Thanks to all who attended. As a Cherry on the Cream, we were presented with the Mary
Magna Award for the 16th time, good job to all.
We are in desperate need of volunteers for bingo. Please think about one day a month for 3 hours, or being a sub to fill in
when some are on vacation or ill. It is a source of income for the Columbiettes so please try to help.
You should have received your dues notice, please respond immediately, so we make it to our goal of getting all dues in
by Dec. 1st, 2016, it helps us to keep our members list updated.
We have started to sell raffles for our beautiful bracelet and continue to do so until the April dinner dance when we will
pull the winner. Anyone wishing to help sell raffles at any function at the club please call me.
Our thoughts and prayers to Mike Fisk and his family for the passing of his beloved wife, Joan, our dear friend and
longtime Columbiette.
Our birthday babies for Nov. & Dec. are Denise Bonadeo, Patricia Donnelly, Anna Javarone, Lucille Massar, Geraldine
Shelzi, Margaret Tuzzio, Julia Webster, enjoy your day and many more birthdays.
Get Well Wishes to Joan Cannell & Lucille Massar.
Again, if anyone needs a ride please let me know, if you know of anyone who needs a card to cheer them please let us
know. Please keep our military, homeless, needy, less fortunate, abused, physically or mentally hurting persons in your
thoughts and prayers. I think its important for everyone to keep our government and candidates in our prayers, no matter
what our choices are, to get thru this election with "dignity".
Thank you for your help & input, we appreciate anything anyone has done for the auxiliary.
Till next time, have a very happy and healthy Thanksgiving & Christmas.
Your friend and President, Barbara

As you might notice several of these dates are over one year old. Those Boosters have given over and above the suggested $10.
If you do email please sign up for the PDF copy that I send each issue. You will receive a better in color issue that you can keep on the desk top.
Along with the full Shield I send the events page separately, which can be kept on the desk top too, so you can check the dances, dinners etc.
Many Councils only have e-bulletins because of the cost. Please e-mail me [email protected] and I will sign you up for the e-copy

SOCCER CHALLANGE 2016
We only had 5 kids come out for Soccer Challenge at St Joseph’s School, but we had a nice group of good

Praskac, Mark Cestaro, DD Mark Valerio, Vinnie Ferriola, John Hart, GK Frank Polis, DGK Jim
Pritchard, Richard Khoudary, Tom Massar. Coach John says -A sincere "thank you" to all who have

Brother Artie Birke is the unluckiest man I
know. He never misses a business meeting but
he did in Oct. He had to pick up family at the
airport and we pulled his name for the $500
attendance award. When I told him, he said
that’s the second time that has happened.
Lesson learned; pay for a limo next time – it’s
cheaper.
SPECIAL AWARD
Bob Karaffa was given recognition for
SIXTY FIVE YEARS A KNIGHT
Dan Rybicki received a special award for 3
years of 100% attendance at council
meetings, his helping with Slam Breakfast
and his work with on the Christmas Parade.
September Knight of the Month August Knight of the Month
Mark Cestaro has been on track for this award from
his First Degree. He made each Degree at the first
chance he had. He is a regular at Bingo and had to
help with Soccer.
Artie Birke is in line for this award every month.
Nobody works harder than Artie.
New Knight John Hart and Ben Maran. Ben is the
mayor of Summerfield and knows everyone. When
John moved in from Mass. Ben recruited him. We
took him down to Palm Beach Gardens for his
First Degree.
