Khalid‘s Way– from Yemen to AustriaIn June of 2011 Khalid‘s family started their way. Above all, they wanted to leave the war torn city and capital of Yemen, Sanaa – their destination was uncertain. More than 5 years later Khalid, his parents and his four siblings arrived at the Vienna Westbahnhof in Austria. Khalid‘s personal way to Austria is shown in this map and linked with statistics pro vided by the UNHCR on the Number of Asylum Seekers in the same period of time.

»The hardest moments were the 10 hours on the boat, without any food

and anything to drink.«– Khalid Seef, 18

Khalid‘s route to Vienna was reconstructed by an interview I conducted with Khalid. At this moment, he had already lived almost 2 years in Vienna. At some points it was not possible to reproduce the exact route, not even with the help of his parents. So I tried to fill up these gaps by using maps and reports (e.g. FRONTEX Reports), which I had found online.

This is only one story, but the statistics suggest that there are millions of other stories to be told. Bearing in mind that the numbers include only official asylum seekers, whereas illigeal migration and deaths are not covered.
