Poland – where is it?• It’s located in Central Europe and borders with 7 countries. It is divided into

16 administrative subdivisions. Capital city of Poland is Warsaw, which is also only city with population over 1 milion people.

• It covers almost 312,696 km2. It streches from Baltic Sea in the north to Tatra Mountains in the south.

Palace of Culture and Science• It’s a notable high-rise building in Warsaw. Constructed in 1955,

it is the center for various companies, public institutions and cultural activities such as concerts, cinemas, theaters, libraries, sports clubs, universities, scientific institutions and authorities of the Polish Academy of Sciences. The Palace of Culture and Science is the tallest building in Poland, the eighth-tallest building in the European Union and one of the tallest on the European continent. It is 237 metres (778 ft) tall. The building was originally known as the Joseph Stalin Palace of Culture and Science, but in the wake of destalinization the dedication to Stalin was revoked. Stalin's name was removed from the colonnade, interior lobby and one of the building's sculptures.

Wawel

• Located in Kraków, it was built in 13th century and it was the center of Polish politics. First king of Poland to be crowned there was Władysław Łokietek and a lot of important people like kings are buried in it.

• The Wawel Dragon is a famous dragon in Polish folklore. His lair was in a cave at the foot of Wawel Hill on the bank of the Vistula River.

Wieliczka Salt Mine• Located in the town of Wieliczka in southern Poland, lies within

the Kraków metropolitan area. Opened in the 13th century, the mine produced table salt continuously until 2007, as one of the world's oldest salt mines in operation. It reaches a depth of 327 meters and is over 287 kilometres (178 mi) long. In 1978 it was placed on the original UNESCO list of the World Heritage Sites. Even the crystals of the chandeliers are made from rock salt that has been dissolved and reconstituted to achieve a clear, glass-like appearance. It also houses a private rehabilitation and wellness complex.

Nicolaus Copernicus

• (1473-1543) - was a Renaissance-era mathematician and astronomer who formulated a model of the universe that placed the Sun rather than the Earth at the center of the universe (Heliocentric Theory). The publication of Copernicus' model in his book De revolutionibus orbium coelestium (On the Revolutions of the Celestial Spheres), just before his death in 1543, was a major event in the history of science, triggering the Copernican Revolution and making an important contribution to the Scientific Revolution.

Maria Skłodowska-Curie

• (7 November 1867 – 4 July 1934) She was born in Warsaw, in what was then the Kingdom of Poland. She was a Polish physicist and chemist who conducted pioneering research on radioactivity. She was the first woman to win a Nobel Prize, the first person and only woman to win twice, the only person to win a Nobel Prize in two different sciences. She was also the first woman to become a professor at the University of Paris, and in 1995 became the first woman to be entombed on her own merits in the Panthéon in Paris. She discovered two new elements: Radium and Polonium.

Fryderyk Chopin

• (1 March 1810 – 17 October 1849) was a Polish composer and virtuoso pianist of the Romantic era who wrote primarily for solo piano. He has maintained worldwide renown as a leading musician of his era, one whose "poetic genius was based on a professional technique that was without equal in his generation.” His major piano works also include mazurkas, waltzes, nocturnes, polonaises,études, impromptus, scherzos, preludes and sonatas, some published only posthumously.

Lidzbark GateRelic of the Bartoszyce’sfortifiaction, built in 1468 in gothic style. It’s qualified as a historicaltreasure. In 19th century it was used as a prison.

ChurchesIn Bartoszyce there are a lot of churches. An outstanding example of a Gothic town church is the church built in 1332 year in Bartoszyce. It is a rare example of a basilica which survives in the territory of the former State of the Teutonic Order.

Our school

This is the oldest school in Bartoszyce which is in the eighteenth-century neo-gothic building. It continues the traditions of the parish school, the evangelical Latin school and the Prussian State Gymnasium for Men which former were in this building.
