About ACCA’s smAll business unit

ACCA has over 100 years’ experience of working with the SME sector. As a professional body we lobby governments, regulators and standard setters in the long-term interest of a healthy SME sector, and we support professional accountants so that they can continue to function as the sector’s most trusted business advisers.

Framing the Debate: Basel III and SMEs (2011)Policymakers still know little about the potential impact of Basel III on lending to SMEs, apart from the fact that it will be disproportionate. With the sector contributing half of the world’s private-sector output, this uncertainty renders all existing impact assessments virtually irrelevant.

The Future of Microfinance in Kenya (2011)ACCA’s conference, ‘Better Business Kenya 2011’, considered the prospects of the microfinance industry. This paper summarises the resulting insights into four recommendations for the present and future leaders of the industry in Kenya.

Coming of Age: What Next for the UK Regulatory Reform Agenda? (2011)Based on a template of regulation-as-taxation, it builds on first principles to discuss the fundamental shortcomings of the UK’s Better Regulation programme and how it can be reformed.

Small Business: A Global Agenda (2010)Reviews small and medium-sized enterprises and their needs for the benefit of those involved in the design of policy, regulation and business support around the world.

Supporting Enterprise Globally (2010)Outlines ACCA’s active research programme, derived policy positions and case studies from across the world of how we engage with the SME sector, identifying some key issues that should be high up on the SME agenda of governments, regulators, and standard setters across the world.

A Digital Agenda for European SMEs (2011)Summarises the views of ACCA’s European members who work in the SME sector and presents a series of recommendations aimed at increasing the uptake of digital solutions by European small firms.
