INTRODUCTION

What is poetry and how can it be

used to communicate freedom?

To me, poetry is a way used to communicate feel-

ings, emotions and thoughts. Because of that, we

could easily, understand the feelings and thought that

were wrote in poems related to freedom. Poetry can

be the most basic, yet the most thoughtful, clear way

to express ones thoughts and feelings.

A storm approaches

The caged bird just sits, and watch

Knowing he can’t cry

HAIKU

2

Statement of Intent Sometimes, in life you can be bullied, oppressed or

even peer pressured, and that would be a moment

when you are enslaved, to be forced to do some-

thing, to be made to try something. The moment when

you don’t control your own decisions. In the Haiku, I

used Imagery to express the “storm” as something

bad, that would affect “caged bird”. “Knowing he

can’t cry”, would refer to not having a say. When

you are bullied or oppressed, usually, you would be

forced against your will and only a few people

would stand up for themselves. If you are bullied, all

you can do is sit there and try your best to hide. The

way I would know that this message would delivered

is that it wasn’t that hard to understand, its basic, but

still clear and understandable.

My fellow country, All men are created equal The right no one can violate, the right to live, liberty and the pursuit of happiness All men are born free and equal in rights; and will always be free and equal in rights, these are words that no one can deny

people who have courageously opposed French slavery more than 80 years, people who have fought side by side with the Allies against the Fascists during these last years, we have the right to be free! we have the right to be independent!

Vietnam has the right for freedom and independence The entire population of Vietnam Is determined to use all of their spirit, power, life and wealth to maintain their freedom and independence

Statement of Intent

For at least 80 years, Vietnam has been enslaved

by the French. They have all lost their freedom, but

thanks to Ho Chi Minh, they were able to regain

their freedom. Everyone wants freedom, and if you

have a strong will, as Ho Chi Minh did. You will be

able fight strongly and will be free. In this poem, I

used Enjambment to separate the pros, which was

the Vietnamese Declaration of Independence. I think

this poem was more effective thanks to the fact that

some words, where separated completely so that it

would be more effective and strong. Which makes

the reader think more about those words, as they

read them. The reason I chose the Declaration of In-

dependence as a pros was because it had a strong

message. To unite everyone’s will so that they can all

fight strong

Freedom, is not something you can give Its not something you can share It is something you must EARN

Through hard work, power and a strong will

Everyone wants freedom But let me ask you

Do you ever think of the people who need free-dom?

Everyone wants freedom But let me ask you

Is it easy to gain freedom?

I want to change the world With all my might and power

To free all enslaved Because everyone wants freedom

ORIGINAL POEM (ONE)

2

Statement of Intent In this poem, I wanted to ask the readers, what free-

dom was. Because it is not an easy question to an-

swer, in fact, it would be a hard question. And once

they have the question in their mind, it would make

them think more about and about all the people who

don’t have freedom. I used Repletion so that I can

add more questions into their mind, so that they

would be able to think about freedom for a longer

time, with different questions that showed a different

side of the world, where people have lost their free-

dom and must fight for it. Only when the readers

think about it, they will understand the message of

this poem. That people who are enslaved are suffer-

ing, but no one cares, no one wants to help them. To

increase the “tension” I also added a little “speech”.

The speech was created by me, but in the perspec-

tive of everyone. Which meant that I wanted every-

one to read that part and maybe change their way

of seeing the world.

A free bird leaps A free man smiles

A trapped bird creeps A trapped man cries

The difference,

Everyone can see One free

One trapped

But no one A second thought

A free bird leaps

A free man smiles A trapped bird creeps A trapped man cries

ORIGINAL POEM (TWO)

2

Statement of Intent Different people would react differently

whether if they were free or not. In this po-

em, I used Imagery and Contrast, to show

the readers two different sides of every-

thing. A free and a free man, was com-

pared with a a trapped bird and a

trapped man. Also, through the usage of

Diction, I used the word trapped because it

would be different from using the word en-

slave. Just because you are trapped, does

not mean you are enslaved. You could be

trapped in a position where you are bul-

lied, but that doesn’t mean that you’re a

slave. I hope that after reading the poem,

people can understand the contrast be-

tween free and trapped people

ORIGINAL POEM (LAST)

Freedom?

Freedom can save you from pain

Freedom, what a gain

Freedom, can give and share

Freedom, right and fair

Freedom helps you learn

Freedom, helps your will burn

Freedom, lets you play

Freedom, gives you a say

Freedom, saves you from stress

Freedom, a true bless

2

Statement of Intent Everything freedom can do for you, eve-

ry way that freedom can affect you.

Things freedom can do for you. I want-

ed to express all of that in this poem. I

wanted to show everyone what it meant

to be free, want it meant to be happy. I

used Rhyming to change how a person

reads it, makes it more fluent to read. I

hope that everyone who reads this will

change and be affected and will be

changed because of it. Maybe, this will

affect a persons thought about freedom

and slavery and maybe they would

want to change the world
