NTRODUCTION
Te Culture o Cities Centre presents Poeticizing the Urban Apparatus: Scenes o Innovation, an inter-
national conerence at the Starrett-Lehigh building in New York August 13-15, 2013. Tis conerenceis sponsored by the Center or Social Innovation, bringing together artists, activists, academics andcultural innovators.
In the context o the conerence, we understand social innovation to reer to a variety o activities thatseek to change existing practices in order to transorm and strengthen civic society. Despite great inter-est in the question o how the city itsel provides an organizing orm or the transormation o culturalpractices, their reception remains underanalyzed. By studying how scenes enable urban interactionand are generative o social change, this conerence engages new perspectives on cultural practicescentral to social innovation. In this context, innovation is dialectical in relation to time, social in itscreation o a relationship among participants, and decisive in its appeal to new modes o engagementand action.

I want to take this opportunity to thank and welcome with pleasure allo you to our conerence, Poeticizing the Urban Apparatus: Scenes oInnovation, in New York City August 13-15th, 2013. I am particularlyexcited by the interdisciplinary and international response to this inter-est in challenging urban routines and in renewing the quality o city lie.Te papers offer a diverse collection o strategies or adding value to thediscourse on urban social change.
In this spirit, at the Culture o Cities Center, we have engaged socialinnovation not as sacred, but as an incentive or opening discussion onvarious methods or revitalizing the city. We examine cases o innova-tive practice not only in the corporate world but also in various avant-garde movements in the arts, in technologically driven modificationso relations and in the constant reinvention o ideas and materials. Wequestion how innovation is created as a social and cultural process andexamine the consequences or cities.
I anticipate the conerence to be a prospective orum or sustaining thisdialogue and an important opening or the first Annual Meeting o theInternational Association o the Study o the Culture o Cities. It is im-portant too, that the conerence takes place in a great city, with the dis-tinctive cultural weight o Chelsea, one o its historic communities. Weare especially grateul to Te Centre or Social Innovation, our primarysponsor, or the opportunity to engage in their newly created meetingand work space at the Starrett-Lehigh building.

Te Culture o Cities Centre is located in downtown oronto at the Centre or SocialInnovation (CSI Annex) and in the Faculty o Arts at the University o Waterloo. TeCentres primary unction is to engage an international public through book series,journals, research projects and conerences. Our publications, special events, work-shops, and conerences are devoted to new ways o representing, shaping and defin-ing urban culture. Tis conerence is aligned with our Centres mandate to generateinterpretive research and teaching that can serve as a catalyst or activities and eventsthat influence participation in the city. Te Centre is in its thirteenth year o operation,beginning rom the inception o the SSHRC-unded Culture o Cities Project in 1999,to the ounding o the Culture o Cities Centre in 2000, to the collectives branching outin 2005 to study discourses o health in the Grey Zone o Health and Illness project, toour present work on scenes o urban innovation.
It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to New York or Poeticizing the Urban Apparatus: Scenes o
Innovation on August 13-15, 2013. Tis conerence addresses the relationship between the urban appa-ratus and scenes o cultural innovation. At first glance the title o this meeting might suggest that sceneso innovation are orms o enchantment that operate against the bureaucratic rationality o the city, ap-pearing as an antidote to the technical, administrative and ormal unctions o the urban apparatus.Other ormulations position scenes o urban innovationart and culture in particularas instrumentalvalues or the city to exploit. Te panels, papers and events o this conerence develop a line o thinkingthat transcends these extremes o enchantment or commodification. Tey begin to carve out an urgentlyneeded space in the recent turn toward art and culture or reimagining cities.
Whether in case studies on gentrification, place-building, art estivals and events, or through explora-tions o the tenuous line between nature and the urban, the presentations here define the debate sur-rounding both mass and marginal phenomena that underlie scenes o innovation. Rather than acceptinnovation at ace value, the proposed papers investigate the human condition and its expression in thesensorium o new media and affect through literature, theatre, artistic works and spatial transorma-tions. Marvin aylors presentation on the downtown New York art scene, or example, brings us to apoint prior to digital media, not by way o nostalgia, but as an occasion to open and reexamine the rela-tionship between aesthetics and politics that persists in any scene o innovation.
Te topics, ranging rom art scenes, to new alimentary movements such as entomophagy, to new useso space and streetscapes and the design o salons and events, reveal scenes o innovation to be narra-tives o conflict and aesthetic configurations o desire that inescapably mark experiences o the city and
its turbulent public lie. Our program is intended as an itinerary through these representations and isdesigned to subvert the anonymous large-scale conerence ormat by creating opportunities or collegialdiscussion, exchange and continued collaboration. Please enjoy the eclectic program and connect withus at the concluding roundtable brunch to animate and enact a robust scene o innovation.

Our series is designed as a creative disrup-tion to prompt us to reflect on what ood is as an ideal and to changethe processes o consumption and production. Te Salons are aboutseeing, hearing, touching, smelling, tasting, and pressing this sensoryexploration to impel a collective sixth sense: an intuition or premoni-tion o a better world realized together in the cities where we live.
Aruna Handa, Founder o Alimentary Initiatives, and Elke Grenzer,Director o the Culture o Cities Centre host these Salons to bring to-gether artists and musicians, thinkers and architects, mixologists andtheorists, ood enthusiasts and producers to ponder and taste the u-ture. Te current series invites award-winning ches and cooks likeCookie Martinez to create canaps designed to seduce you to tastecrickets.
Our eatured speaker, Jakub Dzamba, inventor and PhD architecturestudent at McGill University, presents his ideas about integrating in-sect rearing into the very abric o buildings in our cities. He dem-onstrates his cricket arming prototypes, including his latest inven-tion, the counter-top cricket arm. Well also hear rom Pat Crowleyo Chapul Bars and Harman Johar o World Ento, representing twocompanies innovating edible insect products in the ood space. Youare invited to meet artists Han Zhang and Helen Yung and contribute

/Like Manna From HeavenHan Zhang & Helen YungInstallation
/ Like Manna From Heaven is an art installation created by HanZhang and Helen Yung or the event, Crickets On Te ip o Your ongue, aFuture Food Salon hosted by Alimentary Initiatives and Culture o Cities Centre.
Inspired by the Chinese expression(literally, pie rom the sky, mean-ing ree and delicious ood alling rom heaven), the installation invites view-ers to contemplate gifs rom above, and describe their taste and texture. Natureblesses us with so many ree and delicious ood alternatives. What does mannarom the uture taste like to you?
A collection o ancient Chinese poems in praise o ood was selected and hand-written in Chinese calligraphy on over 100 eet o rice paper. Te paper was thencut by hand to create organic orms reminiscent o baskets, fishing nets, beehives,chrysalises... o envision the uture o ood, sometimes we need to look to ourpast relationship with nature. How do we maintain our gratitude or nature andeliminate exploitation?

Urban centrality has always unctioned as a lure or those se eking to be near the seat o action and sensuain any civilization, giving the city the aura o the contemporary, creating the spell o the experience o the mode athe moment, inducing any and all to address what it is to be attuned in any present.
Te coexistence o participation and detachment as a sensual encounter in the midst o change that distinguisurbanity as a means o sel ashioning in any present, invites the systematic reinvention o ideas and conduct in marketplace o influences, including styles and scenes in consumption, ashion, arts and inormation, knowledand technology, and regimes o care or s el and other.
Te social practices o urbanity are observable in the arts and sciences, aesthetically, ethically, and politically, inorganization o public and private settings o everyday lie, in the various projects, enterprises and initiatives thmark the institutional landscape o the contemporary in ways appealing to the authority and code o urbanity to being up-to-date, and in the social scripts, public writings, and collective ormulae that purport to describe present as eventul.
