National Steering Committee
The National Steering Committee has been meeting once a month since July 2016 via teleconference (15
meetings to date). The NL Team (Ki, Andrea, Kellie, David, Kiera) meets weekly and often more than once
a week. The Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between Choral Canada, The Singing Network, and
Memorial University Faculty of Education was signed (March 17, 2017). The Official Launch was held at
Memorial University School of Music on March 24, 2017. National Steering Committee and Choral Canada
board members were invited to participate via Blue Jeans.

Spotlight Concerts: Afternoon Concerts at Cochrane Community Outreach and Performance Centre
Jury Process: 25 choral ensembles applied for Spotlight Concerts. By voicing, there were 4 children’s
choirs, 4 youth SATB choirs, 6 women’s choirs, and 11 adult SATB choirs. Applications were reviewed by
a five-member jury panel comprised of Patricia Abbott [chair] (QC), Debra Cairns (AB), Robert Cooper
(ON), Mark Vuorinen (ON) and Heather Fraser (NS).

• Bruneau Centre for Excellence in Choral Music - $20,000 for the Opening Gala Concert, Come
and I Will Sing You!
• Memorial University Office of Public Engagement - $10,000 to support the development of a
Newfoundland and Labrador Choral Federation to be launched at Podium 2018.
Interest Sessions and Lecture-Recitals
There was an exceptional response to the call for Interest Sessions and Lecture-Recitals, with 85
applications submitted. Proposals were reviewed by a five-member jury panel (chaired by David Buley),
and the National Steering Committee anticipates inviting between 50-60 of these proposals. The roster
of accepted Interest Session and Lecture-Recital Proposals will be announced September 15, 2017.

• National Youth Choir – Choral Canada is working with the NYC Organizing Committee to plan a
tour of Newfoundland and Labrador. The committee is working to hold the rehearsal residency in
Woody Point and then travel across the island for the pre-Podium tour culminating in a Canada Day
performance in St. John's on July 1, 2018, at the Basilica of St. John the Baptist. Doug Dunsmore is
the provincial representative on the NYC organizing committee.

Preceding Podium 2018 will be the second International Symposium on Singing and Song (July 27-29,
2018), bringing together scholars, performers and pedagogues, representing diverse disciplines, to
share international perspectives, research and practices associated with singing and song.
Proposal submissions are invited that address multi-faceted contexts of singing and song such as
artistic, physiological, cultural, sociological, historical, pedagogical, compositional, psychological,
medical…and beyond! Symposium programming will include keynote and delegate presentations,
performances, social gatherings, and opportunities for stimulating dialogue and networking.
The International Symposium on Singing and Song II welcomes both traditional and imaginative
presentation formats. Individual and collaborative submissions are welcome. Accepted submissions will
be grouped thematically by the program committee. Selected papers and presentations will be
published in the International Symposium on Singing and Song II e-proceedings. Please submit

• Canada Council New Chapter Grant - Sound Space: Forging New Canadian Choral Stories
This Choral Canada project is scheduled for Canada Day 2018. Jillian Keiley (Artistic Director of
English Theatre, National Arts Centre) has been confirmed as the Artistic Director. This project is
extremely exciting and will bring several additional choirs from across Canada to St. John's, NL during
Podium 2018.
