G reg Wall, Pocono Manor’s Golf Professional, hosts several
Golf Classes annually. He has this tip for us this month:
“Keep your chin up!”
Moving the head on the backswing is one of the biggest problems for
the average golfer. Many times this is caused because golfers tuck
their chin in too much at address, and when they make a shoulder
turn, the left shoulder hits the chin and moves the head. Be sure to

The Fall leaves make a spectacular backdrop along the East Course during the month of
October. Many golf groups plan their outing to coincide with this annual display of color.

keep the chin comfortably out, so that the left shoulder can turn under the chin and keep
the head still.

eet Craig Haltom, Vice President – Golf Management
& Project Development for The Oliphant Companies.
“Thanks for a great first year at Pocono Manor! It is a real pleasure to be part of the team that cares for such a fun and historic golf course.” We have enjoyed getting to know many of the regular golfers at Pocono Manor, and would like to give you some background information on our company:
Oliphant Golf Management provides golf course maintenance and general management
services for 9 high profile facilities in Wisconsin and Pennsylvania. Our main office is in Plover,
Wisconsin, and at the peak of the golf season we employ around 350 people.
Our parent company, Oliphant Golf, Inc., is an industry
leading golf course construction and renovation
company. We have built over 60 new golf courses,
most recently at Mike Keiser’s highly anticipated new
golf resort, Sand Valley, in central WI.
We have also completed nearly 200 renovation
projects at some of the most notable courses in the
country, including Pebble Beach Golf Links, Oakland
Hills Country Club and L.A. Country Club.
M
OGM’s overriding working principle is that ‘every day is important’ – meaning our people
appreciate the urgency of each day of the golfing season. We make a sustained effort to
exceed expectations and to simply get more done, every day.
I was fortunate to spend several years
living and working in Scotland as a
Landscape Architecture graduate student,
where I got to visit literally hundreds of
the world’s greatest links courses, and
work on quite a few as well. In my time
there I was introduced to a common sense
and environmentally sustainable style of
greens keeping that would later become
the hallmark of OGM’s approach to golf maintenance. In short, we keep it simple! We work
hard, follow time-tested cultural practices, and focus on the things that matter most to golfers.
Our first year at Pocono Manor has been fantastic – we learned a lot and we are making great
progress on the course, thanks to the hard work of our course superintendent, Tom Stem, and
his crew.
The newly rebuilt 7th green is
almost fully grown in, and we
look forward to great
conditions on that green for
years to come. Thanks to
everyone at Pocono Manor for
your patience as we restored
that neat little green (truly one
of the most interesting golf
holes in the world!)
Thank you for the opportunity to be your maintenance partner.
Craig Haltom.
