SCHOOL UNIFORM - REMINDER School uniform is a very important part of CGPS and we request that all families support
children in wearing uniform everyday. California Gully Primary School’s uniform policy
shares the expectation that all children wear school uniform as it builds a sense of pride,
community and equality.
If you need support with uniform please contact the school.
REPORTS AND 3-WAY CONFERENCE At this time of year staff will dedicate many hours to student reports in the lead up to the
reports being forwarded to families and the 3-Way Conference. Student Reports will be
sent home on Monday 24th June. A formal opportunity for parents to discuss the progress
of their child/children will occur on Thursday 27th June. Allocation of 3-way conference
times will be forwarded in the very near future.
MISSION At California Gully Primary School we educate students to be lifelong learners and

CLEVER WEATHER PROJECT CGPS has been selected to be part of the Clever Weather Bendigo Project. This project aims to
provide the community and decision makers better information about temperature across
Bendigo. La Trobe University
Bendigo Campus has 3D printed each of these weather pods and created the technology within
them. Every 4-7 minutes the weather pod will upload data to a website which is a collabora-
tion between the Bureau of Meteorology and the UK Met Office. BOM-WOW (Bureau of
Meteorology Weather Observations Website).
Bendigo's current weather data for the whole city and surrounds comes from one location at
the Bendigo Airport. This 3 year project will allow data to be collected to create a better under-
standing of how temperature is different throughout Bendigo. This can help to identify areas
where additional focus and attention is needed to mitigate the heat and impacts of it across
Bendigo through tree plantings and changes to the urban environment. You can look at all of
the Clever Weather Pods that have been installed at the BOM-WOW website. Just Zoom in on
Bendigo!

Over the past week, we have focused on working together and cooperating in all of our activities. We have played in the shed, on the playground, on the oval, as well as cooking cheese macaroni mid-week. In all these activities, the children shared and worked well together. These are skills that we have been working on throughout the year, and we will continue to do so as the year rolls on. Jemma also decided that she would give Ms Ennor some help by taking her food scraps down to the chickens and feeding them. Thank you Jemma! Two highlights for the children over the past week were playing in the shed and cooking cheese macaroni. In the shed, the children used the circus and sports equipment to play a variety of different games and work on their acrobatic skills. A number of our foundation and grade 1 children are now able to use most of the circus equipment without support and are now designing games with their friends. The other highlight was cooking the cheese macaroni. The children enjoyed being able to make a delicious meal. Many of the children decided that they enjoyed it so much that they would have a second bowl and make it their dinner.
Have a great week,
Josh

GREAT TIPS FOR HEALTHY KIDS TIP 1 YOU ARE IN CHARGE Yes, you are in charge. You are the adult and the parent, and it’s up to you to guide your kids. This means you decide what’s best for them and you have the final say. Kids need limits and boundaries. They need to hear from you what’s best for them. Let them know that you are setting rules out of love and care.
What you can do NOW Decide on changes you can make to your family’s lifestyle and eating habits e.g. going for a walk together for 30 minutes at least twice a week, and including fruits and /or vegetables with every meal. Make a list of nutritious foods to buy next time your shop. Take charge of what goes into the supermarket trolley
Good Idea!
Tell the kids you want the whole family to be fit and healthy, and invite them to make suggestions. They will accept that you are in charge more easily if they can contribute their ideas.
This “Beanz Meanz” vegetarian recipe is a great way to encourage kids to eat beans.
It is packed full of fibre and high in protein (from kidney beans) as well loads of
vegetables to ensure kids are meeting their daily nutrient requirements - for this
reason beans are often called a vegetarian “meat”.
Ingredients 2 tablespoon olive oil 1 onion, peeled and chopped
2 garlic cloves, peeled and minced 1/2 cup chopped carrot
1/2 cup chopped celery 1/2 cup chopped red capsicum
1 teaspoon ground cumin & chilli powder 800g (1 can) chopped tomatoes
800g (2 cans) red kidney beans, drained and rinsed
1 cup frozen corn kernels
Topping
1/2 cup shredded low fat cheese 1/4 cup chopped chives
Method
Heat oil in large saucepan. Add cumin and chilli
and stir until they become fragrant.
Cook onion until translucent then add garlic.
Add carrot, celery and red capsicum and cook
until they soften slightly.
Add tomatoes with juice and stir in with
vegetables. Bring mixture to boil then reduce
heat and allow to simmer for 15 to 20 minutes.
Beans and corn can now be added to chilli
mixture and stir to combine.
Serve 1/2 cup of chilli on top of
wholegrain toast, brown rice or noodles.
Alternatively serve 1 cup by itself and top
with shredded cheese and chopped chives.

Food, Glorious Food
The following recommendations are part of our - Kids ‘Go for your life’ program at school: -
Children are encouraged to drink water only at school.
Children should bring drink bottles filled with water only into class.
Fruit and vegetables should be included in lunch boxes everyday. Chips, twisties, noodles (including two-minute noodles), biscuits and high sugar drinks are considered to be occasional food and should not be in lunch boxes. Please note that during the break at 11.30 am the children are only permitted to eat nutritious food such as sandwiches, wraps, dairy foods, fruit and vegetables. Any occasional food that they bring can be eaten at the 1.30 pm break. In the past some children have informed us that they are responsible for packing their own lunches and this may explain why we sometimes see lunch boxes with too much occasional food (chips and twisties mainly), and not enough healthy food in them. The children have been informed that these occasional foods are not suitable as they:
are very low in nutritional value
are high in saturated fat and/or sugar and/or added salt
provide excess kilojoules After revising the Healthy Food Pyramid and discussing the school’s policy on healthy eating with the children, we are now also asking for your support. We need to ensure that the children are ready and able to learn each day by them having the necessary fuel (provided by healthy food) to keep them alert and receptive to learning.

WANT TO GET RID OF YOUR PLASTIC GROCERY BAGS??? Do you have lots of plastic grocery bags taking up valuable storage space in your home? A member of our school community is collecting plastic grocery bags to make sleeping mats for the homeless. If you have excess plastic grocery bags (I’m sure many of us do) they can be brought to the school office for collection to make more sleeping mats. Not only are we providing a soft place for a homeless person to sleep—we are also recycling those unwanted plastic grocery bags!!
