It is my pleasure to introduce FlowerHouse™.

When it comes to investing in a greenhouse structure, weighing the pros and cons ofdifferent products can be confusing and frustrating. In fact, my frustration became so great, I endeavored to invent my own. This quest for the perfect greenhouse has evolved intoFlowerHouse™.

Our innovative teams of master gardeners, greenhouse experts and designers have created a revolutionary line of self-erecting portable greenhouses.

FlowerHouse greenhouses set up in seconds with no tools required and are reasonablypriced. There are a variety of sizes, which are adaptable to all geographic locations andgardening needs. All our greenhouses are constructed with the incredibly durable Gro-Tec™material. Gro-Tec™ is UV resistant, 100% waterproof and features rip stop protection.

FlowerHouse™ greenhouses have been designed and tested to withstand high windconditions up to 60 mph. Driving rain, hail and snow are no problem! Backed with a 3-year warranty.

This catalog, video demonstrations and product updates can be viewed on our award-winning website www.flowerhouses.com

CHOOSING A LOCATION

43

While it is entirely up to you where you place yourFlowerHouse™, keep in mind that its location willmake all the difference to your garden. Place yourFlowerHouse™ on flat, level ground and if possible, raised above the surrounding ground. This will allow

for good drainage. Choose an area wherethere will be maximum exposure to the sun.Your FlowerHouse™ garden will benefit fromimmense sunlight. If all day exposure is notpossible, morning sun from the east is secondbest. With sun first thing in the morning, yourplants can begin photosynthesis early, thus, maximize growth throughout the day. If you areplanning to use your FlowerHouse year-round,place it where it will allow for the most wintersun exposure.

FlowerHouse™ products should not be used inextremely high winds that exceed 70 mph. Usein such conditions may result in damage toyour FlowerHouse™ or plants, or severe injuryto you. Protect your FlowerHouse™ from the

prevailing winds. The winter prevailing winds areespecially detrimental to the vitality of your plants. Ifyou are unsure of the direction of the prevailingwind, check with your local weather service. Ifpossible, set up your FlowerHouse™ where yourgarage, home, or other structure can providedefense from the wind. By placing yourFlowerHouse™ near your home, you are sure tospend more quality time in your garden. Large trees

and shrubs can help guard your FlowerHouse™from wind, as well; but be cautious of trees thatmay block needed sun. The main door should belocated downwind to protect your plants from ablast of outside air when entering or exiting yourFlowerHouse™.

Some added features to the FlowerHouse™ assistin its protection from the wind. Once yourFlowerHouse™ is fully erected, secure it using allavailable high-wind tie-downs, and all suppliedstakes. Along the bottom, place heavy materials onthe skirting. Use decorative materials, such asstones, bricks, landscape timbers, or potted plants,to weigh it down. In addition to their practicalpurpose, these materials can be used to decoratethe inside and outside of your FlowerHouse™. Youshould plan to cover the skirting in the interior.Make sure to do so before installing any shelving orplant benches.

As you water your plants, it is impossible not to getwater on the ground. To avoid a muddy floor in theinterior of your FlowerHouse™, cover it with pearock, fieldstone, bricks, gravel, or mulch.

Before setting up your FlowerHouse™, be sure thatit does not violate any law or ordinance in yourcommunity.

Warning: Caution!! Prior to setting up yourFlowerHouse™ Greenhouse, contact your localMiss Dig at the cable, gas and electric companyto establish where cables, gas lines and wiresare located so no accidents happen whileSTAKING down your FlowerHouse™. MAINTENANCE ANDSTORAGEWhile working with plants and soil, yourFlowerHouse™ is sure to get dirty. With a lowpressured sprayer, hose down the walls to be ridof dirt and dust. If mold or mildew has grown, wash away with mild soap (such as dish soap)and warm water. Do not use detergents, as theyare too abrasive for the Gro-Tec™ material. Before storing your FlowerHouse™, be sure thatit is clean and completely dry. Mold and mildewmay grow and stain your FlowerHouse™ if it isstored while wet or damp.

MAXIMIZING SPACE USAGEThe variety of ways to use the space in yourFlowerHouse™ is endless. Your local gardencenter can help you plan a layout for the interior ofyour FlowerHouse™, and can also provide youwith the materials necessary to do so. The designand layout of your FlowerHouse™ should dependupon the type of plants you choose to grow.

Plant benches or adjustable shelving units alongthe walls can provide you with a good way tooptimize your working space. The area on andbelow the bench can be used to place yourplants. Add shelves for more plants, or removeshelves for more space. Moreover, raisedbenches will remove some of the strains fromyour back. With less bending and aching, youare sure to spend more quality time in yourFlowerHouse™ garden.

Some gardeners may prefer to make use of thespace with trellises. A trellis is a vertical structureused to help your plants grow upward, instead ofoutward. These can be constructed out of justabout anything. A steel, wood, or plastic framecan be covered with fencing or chicken wire.

Attach the material to the frame with nails orstaples. The purpose is to give the frame enoughsupport to remain standing tall, but leave enoughroom for plants to grow up and through thematerials used.

Some plants do not immediately take to trellising. These plants require a little extra help. To keepthem growing upward, you may need to tie themto the trellis. Any number of household items canbe used, string, shoelaces, wire hangers, or evenold video or audio tape. Remember to becautious when tying up your plants. If it is tootight, it could cut the plant. Other plants, such ascucumbers, are perfect for trellising. Tendrils, likelimbs, grab onto the trellis without the aid of astring holding it up.

Another common material used for trellisingplants is an old nylon stocking. They areespecially ideal for fruiting plants. Tie one end ofthe stocking to hold the plant to the trellis. Usethe other end to slip over the fruit of the plant. Asthe fruit grows, the stocking will grow with it. It willhold the fruit closer to the trellis and prevent itsweight from breaking off the plant.

TEMPERATURE ANDVENTILATIONTemperature plays a vital role in the health ofyour FlowerHouse™ plants. Thermometers areimportant to help you monitor the temperature. Adigital thermometer is ideal because it can showyou the high and low temperatures of the dayand night. When setting up your thermometer, tryto find a position where it is not in direct sunlight.Place it in an open-ended, light colored box toget the most accurate reading. Air will flowthrough the open ends, and the light color willblock direct sunlight. Although the idealtemperature for the growth of each plant varies, most plants survive well in temperatures between50º and 85ºF (15º and 29ºC). There are anumber of ways to keep your plants within theirideal temperature range.

The trellis can also serve as a base for hangingbaskets. Attach a hook to the top with enoughroom for the basket to fit. Hanging baskets cannotbe hung from the frame of the FlowerHouse™.The FlowerHouse™ would collapse and couldresult in serious injury or death.

WARNING: Sharp edges of wood, wire or nailsmay cut unwanted vents in your FlowerHouse™.Always be sure to soften any sharp edges ontrellises, shelving units or furniture so no damageis done to your FlowerHouse™.

To heat your FlowerHouse™, try anycombination of the following:

• Minimize the amount of time the doors areopen.

• Completely close all of the vents.

• Place large containers filled with water insideyour FlowerHouse™. The water will absorbthe heat throughout the day, and when nightfalls, they will release the heat back into yourFlowerHouse™. Metal containers work moreefficiently than plastic containers, but bothwork well.

• Grow lights not only provide adequate light foryour plants, but they produce heat as well.

• Check your local garden center for other safeheating options.

To cool the air in your FlowerHouse™, try anycombination of the following:

• Secure the shade cover to the roof.

• Open the vents and secure them with thewindow straps. CAUTION: In cooler weather, open the vents one at a time so your plantsdo not suffer from a sudden gust of cool air.

• Set up a fan in one corner of yourFlowerHouse™, it will create an air current forcooling air. To ventilate even more, include asecond fan set up in the opposite corner ofthe first. This will create an especially effectivecircular air current.

• Check with your local garden center for othershade options. Most garden centers will carrya washable, spray-on shade cover.

WATERING IN YOURFLOWERHOUSE™Though watering plants is a simple task, there area number of things to keep in mind while doing so.First and foremost, the plants in yourFlowerHouse™ will need less water than if theywere outside. With the vents closed, the humidconditions inside the FlowerHouse™ enable thesoil to retain more moisture. Because of this, youmust be cautious of overwatering. Too muchwater could drown your plants. On the other hand, underwatering is still a danger. The soil will dry ourmore quickly as you ventilate and heat yourFlowerHouse™. In order to determine whether ornot your plants need to be watered, insert onefinger into the soil. If the soil under the surface isdamp to the touch, your plants can go another daywithout water. If the soil is dry and dusty, yourplants need to be watered immediately.

When using a hose sprayer to water your plants, choose the lowest setting, "mist" or "rain." Aforceful sprayer can disturb your plants or the soilthey are in. You can also put your plants at risk bywatering the leaves. Instead of watering fromabove, water the soil under the leaf canopy. Whenthe leaves are consistently wet, your plants aremore susceptible to diseases, such as stem orroot rot.

When possible, water your plants early in theday. Heat will cause water to evaporate. A goodsoaking before the high temperature of the dayhelps to prevent soil from drying out. Remember,

with cooler temperatures, the soil will not dry outas quickly and will not need to be watered asoften.

GREENHOUSE PESTSEvery garden or greenhouse attracts its ownpests. Your role as gardener is to recognizethose pests and protect your plants from them. The sooner you recognize and identify your pestproblem, the sooner you can take steps to treatand prevent them. No pests are limited only togreenhouses. Here are some that commonlyoccur:

• Aphids: These pests are the most commonto a garden. They are tiny, pear-shapedinsects, most often pale green, but they canbe yellow, pink, black or gray. Most aphidsare wingless, though there are some that dohave wings. You can detect an aphidinfestation by the shiny, sticky substance theyleave behind on leaves and stems, calledhoneydew. This substance attracts otherpests, such as ants, flies, yellow jackets andhornets. Another sign of an aphid infestationis curling of leaves of your plants. Whileaphids eat, they often curl the leaves aroundthem to protect them from predators. In large

numbers, aphids canstunt plant growth, reduce yields, kill plants,or even introducediseases. With their fastrate of reproduction, aphidinfestations can seem tooccur overnight. Aphidsdo not need to mateto reproduce. Theygive birth to live young withinseven to ten days. Some aphids are evenborn pregnant. Though their reproductiontakes place at any time of year, theyparticularly like cool weather. Spring and fallare the times to be most aware of these pestsand their potential infestations.

• Spider Mites: These pests are microscopicinsects that resemble spiders, and can be red, brown or black. They are common togreenhouses because of the lack ofpredators. You can detect an infestation ofspider mites by the web they weave around oron the underside of the leaves of your plants.

The webs are not assymmetrically woven as

those of regular spiders, butthey can end up coveringentire leaves of a plant.Spider mites feed on flowers, the blossom ends of fruits, and the chlorophyll of

leaves. Discolorationmay occur because of

the toxins that spider mitesinject while eating. They can cause the leavesof your plants to look stippled, or spotted, withyellow or white dots. Their most commonresidence is on the underside of leaves, where it is unlikely for predators to find them.Large populations can stunt plant growth, reduce yields or kill plants. The infestationswork quickly, and can kill a plant within amatter of days. Spider mites reproduce rapidlyin dry, hot temperatures. The hotter it is, thequicker they mature from egg to adult, and thequicker they lay more eggs. Summer is thetime to be most aware of these pests andtheir potential infestations. Though

Page 53: P.O. Box 595 • Clio, MI 48420 (810) 686-8252 • Fax (810 ...pdf.lowes.com/useandcareguides/892514000306_use.pdf · Before storing your StarterHouse™, allow the interior and exterior

reproduction may not cease altogether incooler weather, it can be prevented withventilation and moisture.

• White Flies: Many variations of these pestsexist, but one in particular is especiallycommon to greenhouse gardens. These arewhite, flying insects about 1/16 to 1/8 of aninch in size. A fine, white, powdery waxcovers the wings and body. Like aphids, youcan detect a white fly infestation by the shiny, sticky honeydew they leave behind on leavesand stems. This substance attracts otherpests, such as ants, flies, yellow jackets andhornets. White flies lay their eggs on theunderside of leaves. They hatch within four totwelve days into round, flat, six-leggedcrawlers. During this stage, they feed on thejuices of your plants, which results in stipplingand wilting. Another few days pass and theyturn into pupae; then, finally emerge as adults. They are hard to see individually without amagnifying glass, but when their residentplant is disturbed, the swarms are obvious.Large infestations of white flies can stunt plantgrowth or even kill plants.

Many other pests pose potential problems toyour garden. For more information, check yourlocal garden center or bookstore, or call yourlocal county extension agent. All of these cansupply you with adequate information about howto identify and take care of pests.

PEST CONTROLThere are a number of ways to take control ofthe pest problems you may face in yourFlowerHouse™. Keep in mind that the methodyou use must be appropriate for the type of pestproblem you have and for the type of plants thatare affected. You need to research, test andexperiment to find which method works best foryou and your garden. For more information, check your local garden center or bookstore. Both can supply you with information about pestcontrol methods.

Though less common in small gardens, releasingbeneficial insects, such as ladybugs, has provento be an effective way of naturally controllingpests. As natural predators of certain problempests, they can significantly reduce numbers

without harming your plants. Not every pestproblem can be controlled with other livingorganisms, though. Research your pest problemto find out which remedy may be right for you.

The most common method of pest control isspraying. It is often more effective than naturalmethods because of its precise application. Besure to choose the appropriate spray for the pestand the plant. There are many sprays to choosefrom. Here is a small list of sprays you may wantto try:

• Insecticide Soap: Insecticide soaps are theleast harmful of sprays to humans. They aremost effective on soft-bodied insects likeaphids, leafhoppers, mealybugs, spider mitesand white flies. You can purchase pre-madesoap sprays at your local garden center, or, tomix one of your own, add three tablespoonsof soap to one gallon of water. Do not usespecialty soaps such as anti-bacterial ordishwashing detergents. The specialingredients may cause more problems withyour plants, so for this reason, be sure to testyour spray on some of the leaves of yourplants. If you water a few hours before you

Page 54: P.O. Box 595 • Clio, MI 48420 (810) 686-8252 • Fax (810 ...pdf.lowes.com/useandcareguides/892514000306_use.pdf · Before storing your StarterHouse™, allow the interior and exterior

50

spray, your plants are less likely to burn. Keepin mind that soap sprays have no residualeffect. This means that the vapors of thespray do not work to control pests. The spraymust come into direct contact with the pest inorder to be effective. Often, soap sprays donot affect eggs; therefore, you must reapplyevery few days to keep your pest problemunder control.

• Horticultural Oil: Oils are most effective oninsects like aphids, caterpillars, leaf miners, spider mites and white flies. They smotherand kill eggs, insects, and even diseasecausing spores. When purchasing an oilspray, be sure to purchase horticultural oilsand not dormant oils. Dormant oils areintended for use on dormant plants, and willburn the leaves of your plants to the point ofno return. Horticultural oils are speciallyformulated for mid-season sprays. To be surethat your horticultural oil spray will work onyour plants test some of the leaves. If youwater a few hours before you spray, your plants are less likely to burn. Do not use oilsprays if the temperature is above 85ºF

(30ºC) or severe burning cannot be avoided.Like soap sprays, oil sprays do not have anyresidual effect. The spray must come intodirect contact with the pest in order to beeffective.

• Chemical Sprays: There are many chemicalsprays on the market available for insectcontrol. When used correctly, chemicalapplications are very effective. Read the labelon your chosen spray to determine whatpests will be affected. After spraying chemicalsprays leave the greenhouse. Do not openthe doors or vents to your FlowerHouse™until the spray has dried. Be sure to disposeof your chemical sprays correctly.

When choosing a spray, be sure to pick one thathas been approved by the EnvironmentalProtection Agency (EPA). Be especially aware ofthe guidelines the EPA places on that spray.Read the label to determine its appropriate useand recommended dosage. Some are for useonly on non-edible plants. If you spray edibleplants, be sure that the EPA has approved itsuse for that. If it is usable on edible plants, readthe label to determine how long before thoseplants can be consumed.

The best time to spray is in the late afternoon orevening when the high temperature of the dayhas passed. The ideal temperature for sprayingis around 70ºF (21ºC). When it is possible, spotspray your plants only where there are pests. It ismost effective when you have an isolated pestproblem. Be sure to spray the undersides ofleaves where most pests reside.

When working with sprays, wear the appropriateprotective clothing, such as gloves or goggles.Mix only enough for one application. When youare finished spraying, clean the sprayer. Readthe label so you know how to properly store ordispose of the spray. Keep them in their originalcontainers. Combining sprays may cause themto lose their effectiveness, or to react with eachother, causing damage to your plants.Immediately after spraying, shower and changeyour clothes to avoid contamination.

Read the label to determine how long you mustwait before you reenter your FlowerHouse™.Once it is safe, wet down the leaves of yourplants to be rid of the spray residue as well asany dust that may have collected.
