The Big Picture

Paradigm Shift Outreach Model

Think Alpha Course Meets Economic DevelopmentThe poor don’t need charity. They need someone to help them use the gifts God has given them. Paradigm Shift trains volunteer teams to provide an economic development outreach targeting microentrepreneurs working themselves out of poverty.

South Africa is teeming with bright, industrious entrepreneurs working themselves out of poverty, and Paradigm Shift puts the local church at the centre of the action.

Paradigm Shift sees an untapped army of successful Christian businessmen and women eager to be mobilised to offer hope and dignity in a way that combines their business skills and life experiences with real solutions to their impoverished neighbors’ needs.

This results in individuals, then families, and eventually communities being economically and spiritually transformed. As each church is ignited, it trains groups of 30 entrepreneurs at a time and the tide of transformation swells. This is the leveraging power possible through the body of Christ enacting sustainable, thoughtful development, coupled with discipleship.

Judith’s Entrepreneurship Journey


A wife and mother of seven, Judith had advanced sewing skills but lacked the knowledge to effectively manage her business. So when a friend told Judith about the Paradigm Shift programme, she jumped at the opportunity to receive training to improve her business acumen.

For 18 weeks, Judith faithfully attended the Paradigm Shift business training and discipleship programme where she learned the basic business principles she had been lacking. Using these new principles, Judith created business cards and began handing them out at trade expos.

Her new strategy paid off. At a business expo, Judith met a representative from the Coca-Cola Company and soon after, Coca-Cola ordered half a million aprons!

Beyond business success, Judith experienced a spiritual transformation. “I’m learning everyday to be more Christ-like,” she says. “There is a change in me. I used to be angry all the time, but now I’ve become more gentle.

Judith’s exponential success has enabled her to employ 10 others from her community. Her dream is to grow her number of employees to 70, in an industrial factory that will create and sell fashion clothing.

Judith Thobakgale is no stranger to leadership, she has been providing for her family since she was 16. As the sole breadwinner, she had to make the tough decision to forgo her high school education so the needs of her five siblings could be met.

Impact

“The Paradigm Shift approach to economic development is one of the only truly empowering, sustainable, and effective approaches I’ve come across. In mainstream economic development policy, there is far too much emphasis on an active, top-down policy approach. This approach to development has been tried and found wanting.

What’s needed instead is an active, bottom-up strategy. Paradigm Shift puts that strategy into action, and the results speak for themselves. I’m convinced that if the Paradigm Shift framework were implemented in every urban poor community in the country, we’d see a profound, positive transformation of our economy and society.”

Fifteen South African churches have mobilised experienced volunteers from within their congregations to train, coach and mentor 2000 entrepreneurs. These entrepreneurs have increased their income by an average of 72%, supporting more than 9000 family members. Eighty-six percent started saving by the end of the programme and 14% began following Christ.

Paradigm Shif t ’s church-based economic development outreach serves outreach-orientated churches in South Africa who desire to stop giving handouts and, instead, start impacting their greater community by empowering microentrepreneurs.

Paradigm Shift gives churches a structure and a ministry model to transform the entrepreneurial poor by mobilising businessmen and women to offer business training, intentional discipleship, one-on-one mentoring and microloans.

Our Ministry ModelFour key components of Paradigm Shift’s model work synergistically with one another. Each outreach consists of business training and discipleship and for churches who have the human capital and financial capacity, it can also include mentoring and microloans.

The Paradigm Shift programme has been in development since 2007. In 2012, we were selected as a leading social enterprise by Praxis, a Global faith-based social entrepreneurship accelerator programme.

Working with over 1500 entrepreneurs, Paradigm Shift has helped them experience (on average) over 72% business growth as a result of their programme participation.

Based on world’s most successful anti-poverty strategies, Paradigm Shift’s model mobil ises capital and resources to maximise microentrepreneurs’ potential.

Three bus iness t ra in ings and two discipleship courses have been tailored for adult entrepreneurs with life experience but limited education. The curriculum utilises experiential methods of learning that are fun, game-based, interactive and immediately applicable.

Through Paradigm Shift’s training of trainers model, your team is supported and guided through the whole process, reducing the responsibility and time commitment for volunteers, and ensuring the effectiveness and quality of your programme.

The fundamentals of business, mentoring and discipleship remain the same, with personal application facilitated through weekly challenges, table group discussions and one-on-one mentoring.

One-Day Business Experience Course

Six business-minded volunteers offer a basic business skills training course called the One-Day Business Experience Course.

It is a fun, fast-paced eight-hour business training that takes entrepreneurs on a journey of exploring basic business skills. Paradigm Shift has created the course to be fun, interactive and very engaging for both the trainers and entrepreneurs.

Through peer-learning exercises and structured discussions, the volunteer team unpacks learning for adult entrepreneurs in a way that is highly relevant and immediately applicable.

The One-Day Business Experience Course also provides a useful testing ground to see which volunteers and entrepreneurs are ready to take the learning to the next level.

Where It BeginsEvery great story has a beginning. On a Saturday, entrepreneurs are trained by volunteers and the stage is set to move toward lasting transformation. It’s a practical first step in serving the community, identifying the right entrepreneurs and building a strong outreach foundation.

Module One and Two: The Fundamentals

After the Business Experience Course, the volunteer team and 30 entrepreneurs meet weekly together for an hour. Each week, they unpack a transferrable business skill and a foundational discipleship topic.

Usually on a weeknight between Monday and Thursday each week for nine weeks, a specific business topic and discipleship topic will be discussed as entrepreneurs grow to the next level.


Moving From One-Day To Lasting TransformationThe goal of Paradigm Shift is to enable growth both as followers of Jesus and as entrepreneurs. This vision carries immediate impact, but also the promise to benefit families and communities for the future.
