Knox Roadrunners
July 2012
Welcome to “What’s said on the
run” #42.
Great Ocean Road
This iconic event is the biggest KR
family event of the year. We had
43 competitors and more than 80
including family and friends attend
at least part of our weekend at
Apollo Bay.
Monday breakfast after the GOR
This year the weather was the best
we have experienced in the years
of the GOR and our times were
generally a bit better. Sandy led
the 45k home for us in an excellent
time – she was 8th lady across the
line. Nicole A did a great time and
John Signorini created his PB in
what is a tough event.
In the 23k we had our two fast guys
in Ross finishing 13th and Bryan 33rd
from almost 2,000 finishers.

Sam, Bruce & Tigger after the 14k Saturday
Marathoners John, Sandy, Anthony & Jason
looking remarkably well after 45k
Well done to Helen Stanley in
winning F55. This event now has
more than 4,000 competitors and
the cream of the crop attend. To
finish in the top few of your age
category is an achievement.
Mike finishing the 23k
We had plenty of family members
attend and they all received the
traditional welcome. Some of the
kids also joined in for the Saturday
1.5k kids’ dash.

And what does the serious distance
runner prepare with? The team
staying in the big Montrose house
had this stuff:
Electrolyte?

Vale – “Little Bobby” Sayers
We lost a long time KR member,
gentleman and friend on 21 June.
Dave Souter & Bob at the Eastlink run 2008
“Bob entered KRR folklore some years
ago on King Island when he
participated in the annual free willy
race in the nude - his partner in crime
was Gavin amongst others who chose
to be free of clothing. The event is
immortalized in film! We had a fun
weekend that weekend - lots of laughs
and good times. He was a lovely
person to chat with on the long runs, a
gentleman and genuinely nice guy”.
Helen Stanley
“Very sad. Bob, along with brother
Don and others, was largely
responsible for introducing me to Knox
Roadrunners early last decade, via the
Tally Ho fitness group and the Wattle
Park Sunday runs”. Pete Bignell
“I will remember Bob as 'Little Bob', a
brilliant down-hill runner, long time
orienteer and great buddy and
running partner to his brother Don.
Although I haven't seen Bob for years, I
will remember him as a super friendly
fella, great to chat to on the long runs
and to be envied on his One Tree Hill
descents”. Janita Keating
Our sympathies to Marion and family.
Trivial night out
Quizmaster Neil again displayed all
his skills in organising us for our
annual KR Trivia night – another
cracker event. There are lots of
laughs but with big Anthony pacing
the corridor at hospital awaiting
Deb, we had none of the usual
aggro and baiting of the
quizmaster.
Winners are grinners – but it looks like an inside
job this year.
Brydee selected for London
KR’s own supported athlete Brydee
Moore has been selected for the
London Paralympics. Brydee joined
us in June to share the great news.
KR assists Brydee with some training
expenses and this year we
contributed $750 of KR member
funds.

Good luck for London!
New members
Welcome to Danni Webb, Shane
Kelly, Stacey Morrison, and Joanne
Noyes.
As usual, the early winter gives us
an influx of new members and we
are getting close to a hundred
members. Now you know what our
fantastic new members look like,
introduce yourself. They can all run.
Danni & Shane
Stacey & Joanne
Know your KR member – Marie
Marie Kavanagh has been an active
member of KR since 2006 and is a
member of the KR committee.
Marie has a very impressive running
CV. She is known for her determination
and fast pace. She also loves a “chat”
on the run. Having her fair share of
injuries, Marie somehow manages to
get back out on the track and
produce remarkable times. Wouldn’t
we love that gift!
After blitzing the UK running scene,
Marie has made Australia her home,
where she has continued on with
some great running results.
Pretty determined lady is our “Shortie”
Tell us about your UK running days:
As an 18 year old I was partying hard
and had gained unwanted weight, so
decided to do something about it and
join a gym. I went every Sunday
morning, plus Tuesday and Thursday
evening, where I did an aerobics and
weights session. In between I did a
little running for fitness.
Three years later the gym closed down
so I joined ‘Sutton Runners’ who met
every Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday.
What’s Said on the Run # 42 – July 2012

I went along that first evening wearing
my plimsolls, and was told by a lady
runner that I couldn’t possibly run in
those, but I did! We did a 5 mile run
(more than I had ever run before), and
I found it surprisingly easy, so it wasn’t
long before I was hooked.
I ran my first race on New Years Eve in
1989 – a 10 mile race, which I
completed in 79 mins 39 secs – very
proud of myself, and having earned a
few drinks that night!
Four months later I ran my first London
Marathon. My longest training run was
14 miles, so 26.2 miles was a bit of a
step up, but I was just blown away by
the atmosphere and loved every
minute of it. I did not experience the
wall as I wasn’t pushing hard, I was just
soaking it all up, finishing in 3 hrs 54
mins (10 minutes to cross the start line).
My quickest London Marathon was 3
hrs 18 mins in 1993. At this time most of
my long training runs were on the
North Downs. I used to meet up with a
group at the unearthly hour of 8am on
a Sunday morning, which my friends all
thought was madness! The runs were
muddy, hilly, frosty, slippery and a lot
of fun – far easier than 3 hours
pounding the concrete. No-one was
left behind, with regular regrouping,
especially after a tough hill climb – the
faster you ran, the longer rest you had
whilst waiting for the last runner. There
was a lot of tomfoolery on these runs
where mud was involved. A change
of shoes and socks were essential!
Running record UK & Australia?
All my fastest times were achieved in
Australia:
10k 38:45 Sussans Dec 2010
21.1k 1:29:17 Run Melb June 2009
42.195k 3:05:40 Melbourne Oct 2010
I ran London 5 times and Melbourne 6
times so far, plus 2 other marathons. I
have also run several Ultra’s.
What is your most memorable
running moment?
Sussans 10k – PB of 38:45
My 10km PB has to be the biggest as I
tried for so long to break 40 minutes,
and finally achieved this, only to
discover I had missed out on winning
my age category by 1 second, so I
guess this makes it a good and bad
example!
One of my proudest moments was
completing the Seven Sisters Marathon
in 1995 in 3 hrs 52 mins. This was a
cross-country marathon, crossing
What’s Said on the Run # 42 – July 2012
www.knoxroadrunners.com Page 6
styles, fields of cows and dirt tracks on
the South Downs – and of course the
seven challenging hills. I was just
stoked to break 4 hours on such a
challenging run.
Favourite event & why?
Hard to choose between Puffing Billy
and Great Ocean Road, as both are
big KRR events which bring everyone
together. I love the novelty of racing
the train at Puffing Billy, and seeing so
many KRR singlets throughout the
route. Great Ocean Road is such a
fun weekend – the race is just part of it,
and one day I will do the marathon!
You recently announced your
acceptance into Victoria Police:
When I discovered that the eyesight
could be overcome and height didn’t
matter, I was really keen to give it a
go.
This is what bank robbers will see as they exit
the bank with a sack of cash. “Gotcha”!
I am now so excited about this new
adventure, and whilst it will mean
scaling back the running for a little
while, I am hoping that it will give me a
chance to rid myself of all the little
niggles that have accumulated.
Nickname?
At Sutton Runners I was called ‘Shortie’
and it stuck!
Team Kavanagh?
I am married to Brian (for nearly 21
years), and we have been blessed
with 2 teenage girls, Holly (14) and
Laura (13) who come with their own
challenges!
Marie with Brian, Holly, Laura plus Mum & Dad
and brother & sister-in-law
What is it about the club that gets you
out of bed early on a Saturday
morning?
I love having someone to talk to when
I’m running, as I look pretty silly when I
run along talking to myself! I love the
camaraderie of the club. I never
intended to run another marathon
when I joined KRR, but I got caught up
in the excitement of the winter training
calendar and have now run 6
Melbourne Marathons. It’s great to

chat to and run with like-minded
people who share your passion.
So folks, there’s a bit more of an
insight into Marie. I dare say the
criminal element of our society will
be shaking in their boots when they
know Marie is out patrolling the
streets.
I sure hope they can run fast, and
are good listeners!

Sub3 lady in 1971 (Wikipedia)
Adrienne Beames (born 7/9/1942) is
an Australian distance runner
frequently credited as the first
woman to break the 3-hour barrier
in the marathon. On 31 August
1971, Beames ran a 2:46:30 in
Werribee, Victoria, shattering the
previous women’s world best of
3:01:42 set three months earlier by
US-American Beth Bonner.
In the early 1970s, women's
marathoning was met with deep
hostility; the 1500m was the longest
track event officially recognized for
women. When Beames attempts to
officially enter a marathon were
thwarted, she and her coach, Fred
Warwick, organized an event to be
run over a certified course in
Werribee. Despite Warwick's
request, the now defunct Victorian
Women's Amateur Athletic
Association refused to time the
event. Dismissed by the press as a
"time trial", Beames performance
was not officially verified or
recognized. The IAAF, does not
recognize the mark in their
progression for the world best.
Beames was suspended by local
officials in Sydney when she
entered a race without their
permission, thereby ending her
hopes of competing in the 1972
Munich Olympics. She moved to
the USA where she competed on
the road racing circuit. By 1973,
Beames held women’s world bests
in the 5000 and 10000 as well as the
marathon. Despite the doubts that
had previously been cast upon her
running abilities, she ran an official
2:46:25 at Scottsdale, Arizona
marathon on 10 December 1977.
Adrienne Beames is a mother of
three and the daughter of
Australian rules footballer, first-class
cricketer, and journalist Percy
Beames.
Amazing lady.
