Well, we had a very productive September meeting. We discussed the Christmas party which the Sturdevant family will be hosting on December 8th. The party will be getting underway early to mid afternoon. Details will follow soon. The membership has agreed to pay , from the party fund, for a taco vendor which will enable all of us to have fun without worrying about dinner. Please bring a dessert of your choice to share. The party will be BYOB . We plan on having a gift exchange for the grown ups. Here's how that works. Bring a guy or girl gift and you will get a gift. If you choose not to participate don't bring a gift. Suggested cost is $15 to $20. We will issue raffle tickets for the participants and when your number is called you pick whatever gift is available. Kinda white elephant gift exchange which means you can take someone elses gift if you like theirs better than the one you have. But we will limit that to a one time gift "theft". Also being that Christmas time is intended for the kids we will have a very special guest and the kids will receive something as well. Unfortunately I failed to begin working on the charity or needy family project sooner. I have put out a few feelers to find out how we could help but have not come up with any real families or charities to help. That is clearly an oversight by me and I encourage any future officers to begin that process in July or August. Dues are due now. And overdue in January. Please pay the treasurer at the next meeting or send your payment to the PO box A reminder to trail bosses. Please get your maps and run info to the membership as early as you can before your run. 60 days notice would be nice since everyone is very busy and needs to plan ahead. November meeting on the 1st at Segios restaurant in Upland. November run over the Thanks-giving weekend at Mammoth wash. Poker run is rumored. December run TBD. December meet-ing at Segios restaurant on December 6th. January run TBD January meeting at Sergios restau-rant on January 3rd.

Sincerely, Patrick Fay Standing on a hill of my mountain of dreams. Telling myself it's not as hard as it seems

September Trip Report Holcomb Creek Trail

October 2012

Leaving the 90 + temperatures down the hill, I arrived at camp early Friday afternoon. After setting up, I grabbed my fishing gear and walked 50 yards to the private beach on Big Bear Lake and within an hour I had a nice stinger of fish. Back to camp I went to and prepared for a peaceful evening. That fresh fish fry was out of this world. I sat around the campfire, overlook-ing the lake that evening and retired early. I awoke Saturday morning to find that Bob Bissell had arrived and assisted him in setting up his camp site. Shortly before 9:00 A.M., we headed over to the Discovery Center and met up with RD and Dennice Weddell. After a short delay, while Joey disconnected his Flat Fender and put in the drive shaft, we headed to the trail head. Unfortunately when we arrived we found that 40 Jeeps, from Inland Empire Jeep Club, were in front of us. I went to Plan B and we doubled back and raced to a cut off that would hopefully put us in front of this group. We traveled a short distance on the cutoff and came upon a very challenging rock section. Arnold and Maria decided not to risk damage to their beautiful new Jeep and said they would meet us at the end of Holcomb Creek Trail. It was a wise choice as Steve did experience some damage to his new TJ. We continued up the bypass and finally ar-rived at the intersection only to find that we didn't beat the Inland Empire group so we headed east on Holcomb Creek Trail. We manuvered through 3 challenging sections and only once did we have to pull out the tow straps to assist RD. Great job on his part getting through the other sections on his own. We then headed out to catch up with Arnold and Maria. As we arrived at the trails end, the original group was just exiting the Rock Garden. We watched for nearly an hour as several highly modified Jeeps attacked this section with more than 1 requiring winching to get them through. We headed back to RD's cabin, in Fawnskin, to air up and eventually end-ed up at a great pizza parlor in Big Bear City. After some "socializing" we split up and Bob and I went back to camp. A quiet evening around a camp fire was a perfect ending to a won-derful weekend. Thanks to all that shared this great weekend with me. Be safe and hopefully we will see you on the trail. October 2012

I had to work all day Friday and got a little later start than I wanted to. However traffic was light and I had no issues driving through Lucerne valley. Made it from driveway, if I had one, to the 29 Palms RV and golf resort in 1 hour and 55 minutes. I found a few Drifters al-ready set up and socializing. The camp fire was getting lit and it seemed so were the rest of us. My timing was perfect. Bob Bissell had left camp to attend a Big Horn sheep seminar complete with multiple margaritas which he enjoyed by the stories he told us later. Apparently the perfect woman does exist. But she might be a goat/sheep lover too. Ask Bob, he'll explain. After hang-ing out at the fire for some time, more than was healthy, it was time for bed. I slept outside thinking I was going to enjoy the great outdoors while everybody else was in their motorhome or cabin. It was a beautiful night. But after numerous drinks the night before, the early sunshine greeted me harshly. Saturday morning started the usual way. Bloody Marys and "are we really leaving at 9:00" questions. Which of course we didn't. But most were pretty close to leaving at nine. So my ruse worked. So we left camp around ten and headed to our trail head. After briefly getting lost and not being able to find my way out of the RV park I lost the confidence of all involved. That might be a new record. We did get out and went down HWY 62 to the trailhead. Worked our way up a little wash to a good place to air down. Jason Williams graciously brought some of his USMC maps of the area and led us cross country to a road that we eventually did find that took us to a mine to explore. Some people walked up to the mine and a couple of us remem-bered we owned jeeps and drove to it. It was a nice little road to the mine plateau and I'm glad I drove rather than hiked. I even picked up my passenger, Bob, on the way down. We left there and went in search of Supply mine. Which conveniently coincided with lunch time. We had a great view and some ruins to explore during our lunch break. After lunch I decided to head up a road that I was told had a TJ that had rolled. If you looked in the right place you would see it. The road/trail started out innocently enough but continued to get more and more steep and less and less wide. The loose rocks didn't help much either. In other words we were doing what we came to do. We were jeeping. The drivers needed to keep to the left and the poor passengers had a clear view of the drop off and the TJ at the bottom. A few heart rates were accelerated and palms got sweaty. At one point I got out and walked ahead to make sure we could continue. Thankfully we could much to the chagrin of my rider/navigater who asked me more than once if I was crazy. Rather than answer him I just kept going and confirmed his suspi-cions. The trail did open and we regrouped for a few minutes to let everybodies nerves settle a little Between where we had lunch and now were we had a 1300 foot elevation increase. Pret-ty cool but we had some more to go. One map that Jason had, showed the road we were on circled around and the GPS showed it was a dead end. I believed the map. So we kept going up and kept jeeping. Eventually the trail was getting pretty washed out and soft with deep ruts and big rocks as obstacles. I called on the radio for the group to wait while checked to see if we could get through. Nope it was a dead end. (See next page)

But, Steve Kennedy does not have a club radio and followed me down. At one point I thought that might be good if I needed a strap, but not good if we had two jeeps stuck. However after getting turned around we did get back out without any problems. At the end of the trail was a very involved mine. The entrances were concrete and Bob and I saw numerous ladders that we could have used to explore. It would have been nice if we had time to take a look. But we had to get back to camp before it got much later. We regfrouped again and it was decided that we would go the way we came and get back to camp around 4. Going back down the narrow steep loose trail was easier that going up. I think it may be because we knew what to expect. This time the drivers got to see the rollover. We found a sand dune, go figure, and a few Drift-ers played in the sand. We headed for the highway and a few people said there goodbyes and went home. The rest of us went to the RV park for dinner and socializing. We partied be-fore dinner at Robert and Cathys spot. One note to a fellow member, Bob Bissell, some people have wine WITH dinner not FOR dinner. But a good time was had by all and there were no ve-hicle issues. So no boner flag will be given. I would like to thank Jason Williams for coming out and bringing his maps. That was very useful. Also Bob Bissell was a helpful navigater when his eyes were open. The people that ran the RV park could not have been any nicer or more helpful. When we com-mandeered any empty spot for our fire ring, thanks Norm and Karyn, they didn't say a word. In fact they came by several times and asked if we needed anything. I also heard the people with motorhomes got a reduced rate. I think we only scratched the surface of the jeeping in the Old Dale mine area and would like to go back. ATTENDEES Gaither and Charlotte Vaugh. Silver Jeep Norm and Karyn Gerwien. The jeep is a fair weather vehicle because it has no top, nor will one fit in its current configuration. The cage is the only thing that would be rebuilt, so that a soft top could be installed and accept doors. Truthfully I did not rebuild it myself because it was my first jeep and I really expected to roll it a few times and didn’t want to replace a already functional cage. I did add to it and modify it from the original owner several years ago. It’s just not the cool-est cage by any means, though as I mentioned , it is functional with a cool feature of Ceiling fans! Yep, I installed fans to keep the air moving on the trail while crawling.

The jeep does need to have the cage continued to the front bumper though. I’ll explain, to get more travel the original owner notched the frame for the reverse shackles to swing into. This theo-ry was to get as much flex with the lowest center of gravity utiliz-ing a leaf spring suspension. I have modified the front mount and made new leaves to gain an additional 6” of travel from the original set up. The frame does have some additional support welded in from long ago and has started to show the wear and tear of the trails. The Jeep has 48” of articulation and uses all of it on the trails. Because of this attribute, the frame has flexed enough over the years to begin to sag. This is why the cage, new or existing needs the additional frame work/cage to the front.

No other work needed. I may replace the cage myself if I keep it and possibly freshen the whole thing up? Not sure. I have alot on my plate, hence the idea of selling it. I may have mentioned that I have a new 2 seat Procomp chassis project that I have to finish and need messily 30k to do so……..LOL. Here is a list of items on the 92 YJ Jeep
