WOMEN IN BUSINESS Page 19 Milestone Barbara Hubbard women Barbara Hubbard owns and runs three women’s fashion stores in Sidney. “Over the years I expanded to various locations including Vancouver and have now ended up in Sidney alone as I love the place, love my dedicated staff and consider myself ‘general overseer’ of the entire operation,” she says. “Right from the start I have wanted to create a company that is healthy, fulfills a need in the community and can pay its bills. So far I have succeeded and am proud of this achieve- ment. I do the buying of fashion merchandise in Europe by myself and have the help of my staff for the North American merchandise that we sell.” Barbara has also been a member of the Pacific Opera Victoria Board for more than 14 years. “I am delighted to see their continued success and artistic growth. Needless to say, opera is one of my passions.” What business do you own/run: My company Baden-Baden Boutique Ltd. owns and runs three women’s fashion stores in Sidney: Baden-Baden Boutique, Bar- bara’s Boutique and Barbara’s Showroom. How long have you been in business? I opened the first little boutique in downtown Victoria in 1984. How do you find balance in your life? Looking back I don’t know how I could have done everything that I did. Raising children, husband, school activities, often being away from home in pursuit of just the right merchandise for my custom- ers. Balance? Good family and good friends; being part of various boards which took me away from my daily pursuits and put me in touch with people I would not have met otherwise and sharing their interests. School boards, theatre boards and my special interest — Pacific Opera Victoria Board. Many outdoor activities have been part of my life; ski mountaineering, skiing, hiking, kayaking, golf- ing, and cooking is something I love. Now I am involved in taking classical accordion lessons which means making time every day for practice. It does balance me! What have you learned that you would like to have been able to share with the “younger you”? When an ugly problem confronts you, don’t act immediately — sleep over it — the next day most often puts you on the correct path in finding a solution. What’s the one thing you’d like to do better? Playing and understanding my instrument. What’s your guilty pleasure? Being a news junkie. What is the one thing you could never be without? A glass of wine. What is your proudest achievement? How my delightful two daughters have turned out. What traits would you like to be remembered for? Honesty and reliability If you weren’t in your present career, what would you be doing?
