Spring Is in the Air and Summer Is Not Far Away

I t’s hard to believe, but the tropi-cal South Florida heat is with us again. The sun is burning down and the

air conditioners are humming at full blast. While we are trying to decide between pool or beach, our kids are already looking forward to their summer break, and we are hurriedly making last minute arrangements for summer camps and family vacations.

In the midst of all this, Spring is passing us by and Mother’s Day has “sneaked up” on us. Let’s take a little pause and honor our mothers (and our wives) for they are always work-ing hard to care for us, look after us, and pamper us. Let’s pamper them for a change!

Have a fantastic Mother’s Day celebration!

Sincerely,

Sven BudzischSven Budzisch

Karyn Gold and her son Josh, 12, both of Pembroke Pines, have a new appreciation for giving. Last month they

participated in an effort led by Cantor Debbi Ballard that changed them forever.

It all started when Ballard decided to donate some blankets and jackets during a recent cold snap. Instead of bringing them to the Salvation Army, she delivered them to a group of homeless people living in a park near her home. “They were cold and I realized that I had the ability to help them stay warm that very night,” said Ballard. Several weeks later, she had leftover food from a party and she thought about the homeless people who did not have enough to eat. She divided it into plastic bags and brought it to the park. She handed a bag to a homeless woman who began to cry. “We are so hungry,” she said. Ballard was extremely moved by both experiences and needed to do more. She wanted others to know how good it felt to give.

She contacted the families of the 62 kids enrolled in her private Hebrew school program and all were eager to get involved. Each of the families agreed to bring food with the goal of filling 25 bags of food. They brought enough chips, fruit rolls, bottled water, juice, granola bars, fresh fruit and other items to fill 50. Once the bags were

assembled, the families caravanned to the park. When they arrived, they were greeted by a man who asked if he could speak to the kids. He expressed his gratitude and reminded them that one person can change the world. “These kids received so much more than they gave,” said Ballard.

“They truly learned how good it feels to feed the hungry and make them smile.”

Karyn Gold was humbled by the experi-ence. “Nothing can prepare you for the way you will feel when you see people living on a patch of grass,” said Gold. “We take so much for granted. Our refrigerators and pantries are always full and these people are not sure how they will get their next meal. It felt great to make a difference in their lives.” Michelle Feldman of Pembroke Pines brought her eleven-year-old son Mason. He is always concerned about

people who do not have enough to eat or a place to live and she wanted him to have the opportunity to do something for them. “The homeless were so thankful and Mason was so happy to help,” said Feldman. “He wanted to do more.” Ballard returned to the park with two more groups and is looking for other ways to teach the kids how good it can feel to give.

Last month, more than 160 people gathered at Miramar’s Fairway Park to make a difference. City of Miramar Commissioner Troy R. Samuels organized the “Joining Hands in a Day of Service 2011” project in an effort to

foster the common core beliefs of service to others.Samuels initiated the project last year, when more than 130 people from nine dif-

ferent churches partnered with businesses and the City of Miramar to participate in a beautification project at Shirley Branca Park. The volunteers pulled weeds, planted flowers and shrubs, painted park fixtures, resodded a berm and spread mulch through-out the park. “The project was so well received that everyone wanted to do it again,” said Samuels.

This year, Samuels personally visited all of Miramar’s places of worship to invite them to participate and 12 congregations agreed to help. Other volunteers included Miramar High School’s flag football and varsity tackle football teams, Miramar City Commissioner Wayne Messam and Broward County School Board Member Patricia Good. The diverse group of 6 to 70 year olds brought their gardening tools and gloves and came ready to work. They raked leaves, distributed mulch, planted shrubs and flowers, painted the hand ball court, picked up garbage, repaved the entryway and more. “The park looked beautiful when were done,” said Samuels. The City provided

the volunteers with hot dogs, snacks and drinks. The project had an immediate impact on the surrounding neighborhood and

adjacent Fairway Elementary School. “I believe that it is one of the most important events that we conduct in our City,” said Samuels. “People from all different walks of life and religious beliefs join hands to create something beautiful for the City. It helps to create a sense of community and build fellowship among our residents.” Samuels says he plans to organize the effort again next year at a different park and hopes that even more volunteers will participate.

Julia Whalen has always loved a good party. Last month, the Pembroke Pines resident was the guest of honor at several of them as she cel-ebrated her 100th birthday. By the time her birthday ended, she had enjoyed

at least a half a dozen celebrations, but whose counting!Julia was born and raised in Chicago, where she taught dance to senior citizens

at the City College of Chicago. She was married to Jesse Whalen for 45 years. Julia moved to South Florida in 2000 to be closer to her family. She has two daughters, eight grandchildren, five great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren.

Julia started her celebration with an early morning birthday shout-out from Today Show’s Willard Scott. Later, she celebrated with her daughters Jewel Ecton of Pembroke Pines and Darlene Donaldson of Michigan, as well as Pembroke Pines Mayor Frank C. Ortis, who read a letter of congratulations to the birthday girl. Dozens of friends also gathered at the Easter Seals of South Florida site located at the Pembroke Pines Southwest Focal Point Senior Center in Pembroke Pines to wish her a happy birthday. “Julia has been our client for 10 years,” said Teresa Meyer, Administrative Assistant for Easter Seals of South Florida. “We simply love her. She is the sweetest woman and her family is delightful.”

The celebration was not over yet. Jewel and Darlene planned a large party with friends and family who travelled from near and far to join in the festivities. Everyone had an opportunity to share their fondest memories during a tribute to Julia’s life. They also reminisced as they watched a slide show, looked through a scrap book and participated in a trivia contest with questions about Julia. Some of the guests even won prizes. “Mom enjoyed the kind of attention that comes along once in a lifetime,” said Jewel.

Every day, thousands of men and women risk their lives to defend our country’s freedom. Within the next few months, 175 members of the 841st engineer battalion will join them on the battle field. The battalion, comprised

of active duty and army reserve soldiers, was recently alerted that it will soon deploy to Afghanistan. The soldiers have been participating in an intense training program to help them prepare. Many of them are young men and women who live in Pembroke Pines and Miramar.

LTC William S. “Clete” Schaper, Commander 841st EN BN, who lives in Pembroke Pines with his wife Lisa and two children – Wilson, 9 and Russ, 6 – will be deploying for the fourth time. “The most difficult part for many of the soldiers is leaving their families behind,” said LTC Schaper. “The families count on their neighbors and the community for support.” Battalian Medical Officer Ray Rakhar has been on several missions, but this is the first time he will be deployed to Afghanistan. He will leave his wife Erika, eighteen-month-old daughter Jayden and a newborn in Pembroke Pines.

“I am proud to serve,” said Rakhar. “It is my duty and my passion.”

I n a city with successful city-run “A” rated charter schools, education is a very important aspect of life here in the City of Pembroke Pines. When I became Mayor, our

Commission formed an Education Advisory Board to make sure that all the schools in Pembroke Pines—charter as well as district schools— were aware of the city’s concern for education and for the success of all students. We want to be a part of the force for academic achievement and educational success in our city. Marilyn Soltanipour is the current Education Advisory Board Chair, and she is doing a great job.

We also formed a principals’ group which meets quarterly to keep all faculty, staff and students informed and engaged about everything happening in our schools. In my capacity as Mayor, I have participated in career days, and reading days at various schools, and even participated in a series of mock Supreme Court scenarios at the Charter High School.

Our youth are the future leaders in our community, our state and our country. As such we want them to be as involved as possible in civic activities such as our City Commission meetings. The City of Pembroke Pines and the Pembroke Pines YMCA are partnering to develop a Teen Advisory Council which will encourage active citizen-ship and community involvement from our teen leaders. It will also help to develop effective leadership skills and cultivate a sense of civic responsibility and public service. The schools are organizing a contest to select a student to be an advisor to the City Commission and will actually sit in on Commission meetings. I believe this would be a great opportunity to have our youth participate in the proceedings.

I have spent some time in Tallahassee fighting for more dollars for education. With three weeks remaining in the session, it already looks as though it will be a very lean year for spending on education. However, in spite of the current economic adversity, it is extremely important that we support our students in every way we can so that their personal goals and academic strengths will beat all the odds, and we can be proud that we were a part of their success.

As always, if you have any questions, please feel free to contact my office at 954-435-6505 or email me at [email protected].

It is official. According to the U.S. Census, between 2000 and 2010 Miramar grew by a greater percentage than any other South Florida community. Miramar had a population

swell of nearly 68 percent, or 49,302 additional residents. In 2000, we went from a residential population of 72,730 to 122,041 in 2010. But what makes the numbers so significant is the diversity. These numbers strengthen our belief that “Miramar is what this nation will look like in the future.”

I am especially proud of the fact that unlike other cities, our diversity is our strength. It unites us all, for a better quality of life, and a better tomor-row. Our diversity has made our City a shining example of how people can come together and work toward a common goal. It is this team effort that has brought us to where we are today. It will especially be important during the next few months as we attempt to balance our budget.

As we head into the budget cycle, we will be tasked again with making severe reductions. As you are aware, Miramar, like other municipalities in South Florida, has been affected by the real estate market downturn. Property values in Miramar plunged 15.4 percent from 2009 to 2010, according to the Broward County Property Appraiser. We expect tax collections to take a major hit again. Last year, Miramar col-lected about $49.4 million in property taxes, but projected collections show that we will collect $41.6 million in 2011. Regardless of the numbers, you can be assured that your Commission and City staff are exploring unique and different ways to maintain the City’s quality of life.

I hope that you will take the time to let your thoughts be known to your Commission on what types of services are most important to you. I also hope that you are able to share any cost saving and/or revenue enhancing measures the City can implement. We rely heavily on what our residents say, and most importantly, what they believe in.

Miramar is more than a City that just grew in numbers. Miramar is a City that grew together and realized that differences did not matter. What mattered was that we all believed in our community.

The City of Miramar has developed a 360-degree approach towards environmental stewardship. It has redesigned itself and

reformed policies to reduce its ecological footprint; aggressively sought sustainable opportunities and funding; and promoted environmental initiatives. On April 12, the Broward County Commission pre-sented Miramar with the 2010 Emerald Award, which recognizes businesses, government, individuals, or organizations in Broward County that demonstrate a commitment to protecting and preserving our environment. Miramar received the award under the

‘Environmental Practice Category’ for its extensive efforts in green practices, such as energy efficiency, waste management, water quality and conservation, air quality – emissions, waste management, outreach/leadership, and sustainable sites.

The City’s top-down, bottom-up grassroots path towards sustainability has included leadership, vision and foresight. Miramar was Broward County’s first city to implement a Traditional Neighborhood District (TND) Ordinance which encourages pedestrian activity and walkability and promotes mass tran-sit. The City is also the first municipality in the County to have two in-house LEED

(Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) accredited professional staff members. Miramar has a 3,100 sq. ft. Micro-Urban-Farm program and a 4/10 work week at six facilities. It is also home to the Green Champions, a group of city staff members from all city departments who promote city-wide sustainability.

To save energy, Miramar has solar lighting at all City bus shelters, geothermal heating for pools at both aquatic complexes and Smart Building Energy Management Systems at selected City facilities for heating and cooling. To address waste management, the City has instituted a paperless City Commission Agenda and a recycling program at the 87,000 sq. ft. City Hall Complex. To preserve air quality, the City started exclusively using E-10 fuel for all vehicles that operate on unleaded fuels, reduced idling time of police department vehicles and switched to green cleaning products. And the list goes on. “Our initia-tives have made Miramar a better place to live,” said Assistant City Manager Wazir Ishmael. “We will leave it in better condition than we found it for our children and grandchildren.”

A s an attorney handling automobile accident claims in South Florida, I frequently counsel individuals to select an insurance policy that best fits their needs.  Many

times, consumers do not understand the importance of carrying Uninsured Motorist coverage in Florida. Do not confuse Personal Injury Protection (PIP) coverage with Uninsured Motorist (UM) coverage. Drivers in this state are required to carry $10,000.00 in PIP insurance. PIP covers someone that is injured in an accident regardless of whether they are at fault for the crash.

Florida law provides that PIP shall cover eighty percent (80%) of medical bills and sixty percent (60%) of lost wages when a person is injured in an accident. This coverage is paid out as the person receives treatment or submits proof of lost wages. However, when someone is injured in an accident, often the coverage provided by PIP is insufficient to fully compensate them for their damages. In Florida, drivers are not required to carry Bodily Injury (BI) coverage. Therefore, if the person that caused the accident did not purchase BI cov-erage, fled the scene of the crash or carried insufficient coverage, there will not be insurance avail-able to compensate the injured person for their full measure of damages unless they purchased UM coverage.

Recent reports indicate that 25-30% of drivers in Florida do not maintain BI coverage. This number is increasing because of the eco-nomic climate. Unfortunately, we have seen more and more clients that are the victims of a severe crash where the responsible party did not have BI coverage or their policy limits were insufficient to compensate them for their dam-ages. This is when UM coverage becomes essential.

Under Florida law, an insurance company must offer drivers the option to purchase as much UM coverage as liability coverage. Many professionals decide to purchase large amounts of liability coverage to protect themselves and their assets in the event they cause an accident. Unfortunately, these professionals do not understand the importance of also obtaining UM coverage to protect them in the event they are hit by someone with minimal or no bodily injury coverage. It also protects them if they are a victim of a hit-and-run accident. UM coverage can be used to pay for an individual’s medical bills, lost wages, pain and suffering as well as future costs and expenses relat-ing to their injuries.

We always make it a point to review a client’s insurance policy and emphasize the importance of obtaining adequate UM coverage. It is critical to review your policy to ensure that you carry sufficient insurance to protect you and your family in the event you are injured in an automobile accident.

Howard Citron practices personal injury law in Weston and handles cases involving motor vehicle accidents, slip and falls, dog bites, medical negligence and nursing home abuse. Citron & Bloom has successfully represented clients in various injury and accident cases throughout the State of Florida. Rain or shine, kids always have a good time at Froggy’s Playhouse. This enormous, air-conditioned,

indoor play space caters to children of all ages, from tiny tots to ‘tweens. It’s the perfect place to keep your kids hopping and happy all summer long.

Froggy’s Playhouse features four giant inflatables and kids can hop from one to another. Owner Erika Andrade says these are much more than just basic bounce houses. “Each fun-filled structure fea-tures multiple attractions such as slides, obstacle courses and basketball hoops.”

As if that wasn’t enough, Froggy’s Playhouse also offers an arcade area. Children can play a variety of video games and arcade attractions, which operate on a token system. There is also an air hockey table.

Tiny tadpoles have a special space at Froggy’s Playhouse. The toddler zone features a pint-sized inflatable, as well as a mini-slide, play kitchen, blackboard and plenty of toys. It’s all geared towards children under the age of three.

While kids love all of the activities, parents love the party packages at Froggy’s Playhouse. “We take care of every detail from set-up to clean-up. All you need to do is bring a cake and enjoy your child’s special day!” states Erika, who as a mother of three knows first-hand how stressful planning a child’s birthday party can be.

She also knows that it can be quite expensive to entertain guests. That’s why Froggy’s Playhouse offers several party packages – one for every budget, with prices starting at $200.

“The best part is our prices are all-inclusive,” boast Erika. “All of our party packages include a private party room for two hours, personal party attendant, personalized invitations, themed decorations, plus food and drinks!”

But that’s not even the best part. Every birthday child gets a special gift from Froggy’s Playhouse and a picture with Mr. Froggy. This lovable mascot will hop on over to make sure every guest is having a bouncing good time.

Mr. Froggy loves company. Froggy’s Playhouse will now invite your child’s favorite character to join the party. Erika can arrange for anyone from Buzz Lightyear and Bob the Builder to Dora the Explorer and the Disney Princesses to make an appearance.

Parties are even more fun with Froggy’s Playhouse’s new Bubble Time, where little hoppers become big poppers, jumping around trying to pop all the bubbles.

“The bubble machine has been a popular addition to our party packages,” says Erika.Another reason kids love to party at Froggy’s Playhouse is because

even after the party is over, children are welcome to stay and play, just as long as they are accompanied by a parent. Adults don’t mind because they can relax in the café and lounge area which features comfy couches and small seating groups.

The café serves gourmet coffees and pastries to please parents, as well as kid-friendly food including pizza, hotdogs, mini chicken burgers, and even empanadas. Kids can quench their thirst with bottled water, juice boxes, fountain drinks, or frozen slushees – a real treat on a hot day!

So, when it’s too hot to play outside or too rainy to swim, load up the car and bring the kids to Froggy’s Playhouse. It offers open play every day, from morning until early evening. Children can enjoy all of the indoor inflatables and other attractions for one low price. Open play is $10 per child (ages 3 to 12), $8 for siblings, and $5 per toddler (ages 2 and younger). On Thursdays, everyone plays for just $5. And, there is never a charge for adults.

Froggy’s Playhouse is conveniently located at 10141 Pines Boulevard, on the northwest corner of Pines and Palm behind Applebee’s. Open play hours are from 10am until 7pm Monday through Thursday, 10am until 8pm Friday and Saturday, and 11am until 6pm on Sunday. To book a birthday party package or for more information, call (954) 433-7818 or visit www.froggysplayhouse.com. Please be sure to bring socks; shoes are not permitted in the play area.

M embers of the Pembroke Pines Police Department gave a whole new meaning to the words “pro-

tect and serve” when they volunteered their time as celebrity waiters at a recent Tip-a-Cop fundraiser. They teamed up with the Outback Steakhouse of Pembroke Pines as part of the annual effort to raise money and awareness for Special Olympics of Florida.

The event was coordinated by Pembroke Pines Police Detective Drew Jacobs, who along with a group of Police Officers, Police Service Aides, and Police Explorers greeted the patrons of the Outback and talked to them about the Florida Special Olympics Games. The volunteers also worked closely with the regular wait staff, serving food and drinks. They even helped clean tables. “That night, Outback was argu-ably the safest restaurant in South Florida with the best service,” said Pembroke Pines Police Captain Dan Rakofsky. “The restaurant guests made very generous contributions to Special Olympics.” The officers collected $1,300 in “tips” at the event which were donated it to the Special Olympics to help support sports training and competition for children and adults with intellectual disabilities.

The police officers also had a chance to talk to some of the kids in the restaurant. “The event is an opportunity for kids to see that police officers are nice and that they should not be afraid of us,” said Police Service Aide Cheryl Watters who helped serve.

Lara Summers was at the restaurant with her five-year-old son Kyle. “He was so excited to meet the police officers,” said Summers. “I was happy to donate money to such a worth-while cause.”

For more than four decades, Special Olympics has brought one message to the world: people with intellectual disabilities can and will succeed if given the opportunity. “Even the smallest expenditure of time and money can make a big difference in the lives of these athletes,” said Rakofsky. “We offer a special thank you to the Outback Steakhouse of Pembroke Pines and Proprietor Sam Sanders for their continuing support of this fundraiser.”

The Tip-a-Cop event is part of the Pembroke Pines Police Department’s participation in ongoing events to support the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics. Each year, over 5,000 officers from 300 Florida agencies carry the torch on a 1,500-mile relay through more than 60 counties in Florida prior to the Special Olympics Florida State Summer Games. The relay started in March and will culminate at the Opening Ceremonies on May 13, when officers from around the state will join together to bring the Flame of Hope into the stadium.

Studio 18 in the Pines’ latest exhibition, “Drawn from Experience: Personal, Cultural, Natural, Emotional, and Illusionary,” has been attracting visitors from all over

South Florida. The eclectic exhibit showcases the work of several resident artists. The painters, sculptors and illustrators have addressed commonly felt themes such as loss and recovery, emotional discom-fort, persistent cycles of change, and the illusion of beauty. The free show will remain on display until May 27.

The public will have an opportunity to meet the artists and enjoy a wine tasting during the Studio Salon, on May 6, from 7 to 9 p.m. The artists will speak about their work and answer any questions. “The Studio Salon is a great way to learn more about what drives these artists to create,” said Robyn Vegas.

Debra Kaszovitz’s multi paneled handmade paper wall reliefs capture aspects of disintegration and regeneration. Found objects suggest the past, but are manipulated using encaustic (wax) paint and paper casts to transcend time and traumatic physical events. Her work has been inspired by her role as care giver to a family member who suffered a medical crisis. Maria Wieder’s masterful painterly technique depicts objects in an isolated, unembellished style. Her literal approach to painting mundane objects invites any viewer to wonder what particular memory she delved into to create an object so perfect.

A recent and serious car accident caused Madeleine Bellwoar to focus on both the intricacies of her formidable pen and ink drawings, as well as her life. Figures which hauntingly appear and/or recede into the background of Jill Slaughter’s new work serve as a metaphor for the way she imagines people want to be perceived. Stand in front of one

the expansive images of nature that William Bock paints and you will understand what caused him to paint the particular tree, or canyon or animal. The work conveys the passage of great lengths of time and unfolds in seductive layers of soft colors.

FLAMINGO COMMONS

Students at the Pembroke Pines Charter Elementary School East Campus, 10801 Pembroke

Road, were treated to an ‘out-of-this-world’ learning experience when NASA landed at their school. Les Gold, Aerospace Education Specialist with NASA’s Aerospace Education Services Project (AESP) turned the media center into a planetarium before talking to 150 gifted and high achieving students in first to fifth grade about planets, rotations, revolutions, night skies and NASA’s space exploration (past, present and future). He also discussed the numerous contributions that space exploration has made to our daily lives. “His presentation was very interac-tive and engaging,” said science facilitator Lisa Dizengoff, who worked with NASA for almost a year to bring the program to the school. “He was amazed by how much the students knew.”

Dizengoff is constantly trying to find ways for science to come alive for the students through hands-on learning and other activities. “Children learn by doing,” said Dizengoff. “We need to find ways to help

them apply what they read so they can make a full connection. The students at our school love science and get excited about it.”

This is not the first time that the school has arranged programs with NASA. The East Campus is the proud recipient of a heat tile from a retired space shuttle. Class photos were on the space shuttles launched in March and April and Dizengoff is trying to get a photo of the entire school included on the final space shuttle sched-uled to launch this month. Students have submitted rocks to NASA as part of the Rock around the World program. “Our students and staff are inspired by all that NASA does,” said East Campus Principal Sean Chance. “The visit from NASA was a once in a lifetime experience for our gifted classes. This experience will profoundly affect our students and be remembered.” Dizengoff has already begun discussions for a representative of NASA’s robotics program to visit the school next year.

P redatory lending is when a lender imposes abusive, unfair and sometimes illegal loan terms on borrowers, without regard for the borrow-ers’ ability to repay the loan. When two or more of the following factors are

contained in a mortgage loan transaction, the subsequent forensic audit performed on that transaction usually reveals serious violations of federal and state lending laws.

property purchased or refinanced between 2003 and 2007.This four year period marked the peak of the real estate boom in South Florida. Just about anyone, including foreign nationals without any past credit history, could obtain a

“sub-prime” loan for all the value of the mortgaged property. The sub-prime mortgage market thrived during this time, allowing borrowers to encumber their properties well beyond their true market values.

mortgage loan contains an adjustable rate or “arm” Feature. These types of loans are initially set at an artificially low interest rate for a brief period of time. They then switch to an adjustable rate for the remaining term of the loan, and the rate can increase as often as every six months. Even if the U.S. interest rate index remains unchanged, the monthly payments on these loans could increase by up to 50%. These loans have the highest delinquency rate of any other loan product.

mortgage loan contains negative amortization.Negative amortization occurs when the monthly mortgage payment is not sufficient to even cover the interest due, and therefore, the balance of the loan increases over time even though payments have been made. If you owe more today on your home loan, than when you originally purchased or refinanced, your loan is negatively amortized.

mortgage loan is interest-only or pick-a-payment.Under these types of loans, the borrower is only required to pay the interest due on the loan or some other minimal payment that does not even cover the interest on the loan. After a few years, the required monthly payment is usually increased to cover the outstanding balance. Once the loan payment is increased, so does the likelihood the borrower will default, and eventually be subjected to foreclosure.

mortgage loan approval based only on stated income.Roughly half of all sub-prime borrowers from 2003-2007 were given “stated income” loans, in which they were qualified based on statements in the loan application as to their income. These statements of income were largely unverified, and often the “stated income” required for the loan to be approved was the exact amount included in the application by the mortgage broker.

If any of these factors apply to your current loan, you should at least have a professional

forensic audit performed to find out whether you have any viable claims against your lender. If your claims are timely and properly raised, you may be entitled to reduce the amount you owe, or cancel your loan obligation altogether. A more detailed explana-tion of these factors, different options available to homeowners in foreclosure, and key foreclosure defense strategies are discussed in a new instructional DVD developed by the Arcia Law Firm entitled “Fight for Your Home,” which is available in both Spanish and English. Contact the Arcia Law Firm to receive a FREE copy of this DVD (which retails for $39.95 plus S/H).

The Arcia Law Firm is privileged to defend dozens of homeowners in our community in foreclosure and bankruptcy cases. If you are struggling to make your monthly mortgage payments, or if you just received a foreclosure summons, contact the Arcia Law Firm at 1-800-770-7102 to schedule a free consultation, or visit www.arcialawfirm.com .

The Truth About Healing & Health

How does everyone heal? Where does healing come from? What is health? Am I really healthy? Health is one of the highest priorities for everyone and is worthy of contemplating these questions.

No doctor, medical, chiropractor, orthopedic, neurologist etc… can heal you. Good doctors can help you heal. The source of all healing comes from inside you. The power that made the body heals the body. No healing occurs from the outside. When you were created the first and most important organ to develop was your brain. Your brain is an electric energy healing power source responsible for all healing. Your brain is the greatest most complex creation in the universe.

Your amazing brain must orchestrate all functions of your entire body. How? Directly out of your brain comes the spinal cord and out of the spinal cord are 31 pairs of nerves branching off and literally control every single function of every cell, tissue, muscle and organ. Then all of cells, tissue, muscle and organs send information back to your brain thru your spinal cord. Your spinal cord is your life line between your brain (healing source) and your body. Your central nervous system (C.N.S.) is your master system that controls all other 8 systems, muscular, digestive, immune, circulatory, etc…

The brain-spine-nerves central nervous system is protected by a skull and 24 mov-able spinal bones/vertebrae. In between each spinal bone, spinal nerves branch out to your body. When these spinal bones move out of place, they irritate and damage the spine, spinal nerves and discs. This is called subluxation.

Subluxation is a serious and dangerous condition that literally blocks and discon-nects your healing energy to whichever body parts that spinal nerve controls. When your cells, tissues and organs receive less healing energy from your brain over time, malfunction, disease and lastly pain occur. Subluxations are mostly silent because research proves you can only feel 6% of your entire body. Most subluxations cause havoc to your body, but you feel no pain.

the health solutionTruly principled chiropractors do 100% natural adjustments to correct subluxations.

We use our hands to gently and specially realign your spinal bones. This unblocks and releases your healing energy from your brain to your body and above down inside out. Adjustments reconnect you to your healing source. All healing is an inside job. Medications disconnect you from your healing source. The essence of how you heal is directly related to the ability of your brains healing power source to flow down your spine thru your nerves to all body parts and back without interference.

This is the most important highest priority key to ensure you and your family regains true health and maintains good health. Chiropractic is 116 years old and the second largest health profession in the world. Chiropractic is 100% natural and gives you great results naturally.

what is health?Health is when all of your cells, tissue, muscles and organs are functioning 100%.

How your body is functioning is the true indicator of health. Feeling good or no pain is not the best indicator. Heart disease, cancer, diabetes and many diseases are silent for years.

am i really healthy? You must work on a holistic approach. You are a physical, mental and spiritual being.

You must apply strategies on a regular basis to maintain good health. Chiropractic gives you easy to apply holistic strategies so you and your family can live healthier, happier lives and reach your full potential naturally.

Stroke is the third leading cause of death follow-ing heart disease and cancer. Every year, more than 795,000 Americans suffer from a new or recurrent stroke episode – that

means that a stroke occurs every 40 seconds. Americans will pay close to $70 billion in stroke-related medical costs in this year alone.

Q: What is a stroke?A: A stroke or “brain attack” is damage to the brain when blood supply to part of the brain is reduced or completely stopped. Brain

cells deprived of blood die and can no longer function because they stop getting oxygen and nutrients they need to function.

Q: What are signs or symptoms of a stroke?A: Sudden weakness or numbness of the face, arm or legs; sudden confusion, trouble speaking or understanding; sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes; trouble walk-ing, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination and sudden, severe headaches with no known cause.

Q: What you can do to prevent a stroke?A: A healthier lifestyle plays a big part in decreasing the chance of disability and death from stroke: stop or don’t smoke; exercise regularly; control high blood pressure; maintain ideal body weight; limit alcohol intake; control cholesterol; improve eating habits; take medication as directed; control diabetes and get regular check-ups.

Q: What stroke treatments are available at the Cleveland Clinic Stroke Center?A: Physical and neurological exams are performed immediately to determine brain damage and the cause of stroke. The physician may also get a CT Scan of the head to further investigate the type of stroke. If a blood clot is the cause of stroke, as it most often is, a clot busting medication called Tissue Plasminogen Activator (tPA) can be used for treatment, but must be administered within 4 ½ hours of the onset of symptoms.

If you or someone with you has one or more of the above symptoms of stroke, don’t delay, call 9-1-1 immediately. To schedule a consultation with Dr. Salgado at the Cleveland Clinic Stroke Center, please call 1-800-639-DOCTOR, or visit www.clevelandclinicflorida.org for more information.

Have you received gifts or bequests from a foreign person, foreign estate, or foreign entity?

If you received more than $100,000 in money or other property as gifts or bequests from a foreign person or foreign estate, you are required to report it by your income tax return due date or extension date. A penalty generally applies if it is not reported on time or if the information is incomplete or incorrect. Penalties may accrue for each month that gifts fail to be reported at a rate of 5% of

the amount of the foreign gift (not to exceed a total of 25% of the amount of the foreign gift). However, no penalty will apply if a U.S. person shows that the failure to comply with reporting was due to reasonable cause and not willful neglect.

To calculate this threshold amount of $100,000 you aggregate all gifts from related foreign persons. For example, if you received a $75,000 gift from a foreign company and a $25,000 gift from a foreign person, and you know that the foreign person owns 100% of the foreign company, then you received the aggregate gift of $100,000 from the foreign person for the calendar year.

In addition to this threshold amount, U.S. persons are also required to report lesser amounts, such as the receipt of $14,165 or more from foreign corporations or foreign partnerships (including a foreign person related to the corporation or partnership). At the time of review, however, the IRS may reclassify a gift received from a foreign corporation or partnership as gross income.

Now, as defined in the IRS Pub.519 (U.S. Tax Guide for Aliens), a U.S. person refers to a Citizen or Resident of the United States, a domestic partnership, a domestic corporation and any domestic trust. A related person is defined to include, but is not

limited to: your brothers and sisters, half-brothers and half-sisters, spouse, ancestors (parents, grandparents, etc.), lineal descendants (children, grandchildren, etc.), and a corporation in which you, directly or indirectly, own more than 50% in value of the outstanding stock. Finally, foreign persons include non-resident aliens, a corporation created in a foreign country, a partnership created in a foreign country, and a foreign estate (IRC section 7701 (a)). Amounts exempt from this rule are qualified tuitions or medical bills paid on behalf of a U.S. person.

Moreover, reporting gifts acquired over a calendar year by a U.S. person would require filing Form 3520 separately from your tax return. The receipt of these gifts requires you to disclose the date of the gift or bequest, description of property received, and Fair Market Value (FMV) of property received. Gifts received from foreign corporations or partnerships require you to disclose date of gift, name of foreign donor, address of foreign donor, description of property received and FMV of property received. Close examination of such transactions and appropriately reporting them to the IRS will save you time and costly penalties in the future.

Many parents wait until a problem occurs before they bring their children to the dentist for the first time. Prevention is the most important step in helping your

child develop a healthy smile. I always encourage parents to bring their children at an early age to identify potential risks, take mea-sures to prevent dental problems, and make sure that their first encounter is a positive one. It is also a great time to learn answers to important questions about oral habits and diet. Here are some

of the most common questions parents ask when they bring their children for their first visit to the dentist.

When should my child’s first visit to the dentist be? First birthday or first tooth, whichever comes first. The first tooth usually erupts between 6 and 12 months of age. Your first visit establishes a dental home for your child and is the first step in preventive care.

Why so early? What problems could a baby have? A major concern is baby bottle tooth decay or nursing caries (now known as Early Childhood Caries). What and when a child eats is a major factor in a whether a child gets cavities. Once a child starts eating anything besides breast milk, teeth pres-ent in the mouth can get cavities.

How can tooth decay from using a bottle or nursing be prevented? At will feeding should be avoided once the first tooth starts to erupt. Falling asleep with a bottle contain-ing anything except water will cause cavities. Juice should only be given during meals or at snack time.

When does thumb sucking and using a pacifier become a problem? Most children stop by age 2. Thumb sucking is normal for infants. Any sucking habit beyond the age of 3 can cause bite problems and crooked teeth. A professional evalu-ation by your pediatric dentist is recommended.

When should I start cleaning my baby’s teeth? Immediately start clean-ing your baby’s teeth when they appear, twice per day. Rubbing your infant’s gums with a cloth and water or infant toothbrush and water is great. Children less than 2 years of age get a “smear” of toothpaste (with fluoride) and children 2-5 years of age get a “pea size” of toothpaste (with fluoride). Children do not have the ability to brush their own teeth effectively.

What are some teething tips? From 6 months to 3 years of age your child may have sore gums when teeth erupt. Use a clean cold teething ring, cool spoon or cold wet wash cloth.

Why are baby teeth important? Chewing is the first step in digesting food and very important to maintain good nutrition. Baby teeth are a major part of speech development. Most importantly, baby teeth save the space for the permanent teeth. Remember, a health smile helps a child feel good.

Sal’s Italian Ristorante has it all – deli-cious food, excellent service and great value. Whether you are the mood for a California Chopped

Chicken Salad, Gamberoni Scampi, Veal Scaloppini or Gourmet Pizza, the menu includes a wide variety of traditional Italian dishes, as well as some of the chef’s custom creations. It is conveniently located at the Shops at Pembroke Gardens, on the Southeast corner of Pines Blvd. and I-75. Many customers combine a shopping trip with lunch or dinner while others just come for the dining experience.

From the moment you enter the restaurant, it is hard to resist the aroma of fresh baked breads, the smell of simmering sauce or the scent of the fresh garlic sautéing in olive oil. Many of the dishes contain Owner Nuno Beira’s special recipe for tomato sauce, which is the perfect blend of 100% imported Italian plum tomatoes, fresh roasted garlic, onions, rosemary, thyme and other high quality ingredients. Nuno is a trained chef who wrote the recipe book for all of the Sal’s in South Florida. Three years ago, he decided it

was time to open his own restaurant. “We use only the finest ingredients for everything at Sal’s,” said Nuno. “All of food and sauces are made fresh for each customer and artistically presented. We are committed to excellence and do whatever we can to ensure that our customers enjoy a truly authentic Italian experience.”

Most customers like to start with an appetizer like Fried Calamari or Fried Mozzarella (served with marinara sauce), Grilled Portobello Mushroom (marinated grilled Portobello julienne sautéed with shallots in balsamic demi-glaze with bruschetta mix and gorgonzola cheese), Mussels Marinara (sautéed mussels, garlic and white wine in a light marinara sauce) or one of the homemade soups (Pasta e Fagioli, Shrimp Bisque, Crab Chowder).

Many come to Sal’s just for the Pizza, which is made in plain sight for everyone to see. The fresh dough, special tomato sauce, Grande Mozzarella cheese and toppings make it one of the best in South Florida. Customers can

design their own Gourmet Pizza or chose from menu favorites like Pizza Alla Margherita (tomatoe sauce, fresh basil and mozzarella cheese), Shrimp Scampi (fresh shrimp sautéed with garlic, white wine, mozzarella and fresh tomatoes) and Vegetarian (fresh diced tomatoes, broccoli, mushrooms, onions, roasted peppers, garlic and tomato sauce). Customers that prefer a Calzone or Stromboli can order the Ricotta Cheese Calzone (a blend of ricotta, mozzarella and pecorino Romano cheeses), Stuffed Calzone (stuffed with a blend of three cheeses and any three items) or the Stromboli (Italian sausage, pepperoni, green peppers, onions, tomato sauce and mozzarella cheese).

There are several side and main plate salads including the California Chopped Grilled Chicken Salad (diced avocado, diced grilled chicken and diced fresh tomatoes, mozzarella cheese, red onions, mixed baby greens), Caribbean Grilled Chicken Salad (mixed baby greens, diced grilled chicken, fresh pineapple, diced avocado, diced fresh tomatoes, crispy bacon, toasted walnuts) and La Caprese Salad (fresh mozzarella cheese with fresh tomatoes, fresh basil, red onion, romaine lettuce, extra virgin olive oil & balsamic vinegar) and many more.

Sal’s offers a variety of Specialty Pastas that can be made with white or whole wheat pasta. Some of the favorites include Spinach Ravioli Alla Sal (sautéed fresh mushrooms, fresh tomatoes, artichoke hearts and green peas with parmesan cheese in a light wine sauce), Cavatelli Contessa (sautéed chicken julienne with fresh mush-rooms, green peas and fresh basil, light spicy marinara sauce, tossed fresh cavatelli pasta) Linguini with Fresh

Clam Sauce (white or red sauce) and Penne alla Vodka (sautéed prosciutto with fresh garlic, fresh tomatoes and fresh basil in a pink vodka sauce).

Some prefer to order one of the many entrees served with Pasta, Homemade Garlic Rolls and your choice of Soup or Salad. A few of the most popular entrees are Chicken Parmigiana, Chicken Florentina (chicken breast stuffed with a delicious blend of imported cheeses, spinach and herbs, sautéed with garlic and mixed vegetables in a white wine sauce), Vitello Alla Romano (veal julienne sautéed with fresh Portobello mushrooms and fresh tomatoes tossed with fresh cavatelli pasta in a marsala cream sauce), Gamberoni Alla Cipriani (sautéed veal scaloppini

with fresh tomatoes, jumbo shrimp and fresh mushrooms in a Marsala cream sauce), Calamari fra Diavalo (tender calamari sautéed in a spicy marinara), Gamberoni Scampi (jumbo shrimp in a garlic white wine sauce) and Zappa di Pesce (jumbo shrimp, calamari, clams and mussels), as well as Steaks and Chops. No meal is com-plete without Tiramisu or a Cannoli, both made in-house.

For lunch, Sal’s offers wraps, hot and cold sand-

wiches, as well as a variety of specials including: 2 slices of Cheese Pizza and a Soda for $4.99; Sal’s World Famous Lunch Special of ½ Sandwich, slice of Pizza, Soup or Salad for $5.99; Pasta specials for $7.99 and more. Every Monday and Tuesday is Customer Appreciation Day, when a large Cheese Pizza is only $6.99 for dine-in, take out or delivery all day.

Sal’s also offers a children’s menu that has a variety of items for $5.99, including a roll and drink. It also has a full catering menu so customers can experience the restaurant’s cuisine at birthday parties, office gatherings and other special events. It can supply waiters to help serve and clean up or just the food.

Sal’s is open Sun. to Thurs., from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Fri. and Sat., from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. For more infor-mation, call 954-239-0563. To view the menu online, visit www.SalsItialianRistorante.com.

NewLocation!

A s I counsel women, myself included, I find that over the years, despite noted accomplishments both aca-demically and occupationally, there continues to be a great

deal of societal pressure for eternal beauty, silent conformity and endless giving. Although women have come a long way towards balancing work and family, one of the ways they continue to measure their self worth is in terms of body image and ageless attractiveness.

Women search for what they are “missing”; struggling with issues of low self esteem. The stress that comes with this pursuit of perfection frequently leads to affective disorders including anxiety and depression. Outer alterations often do little to change women’s self concept and/or disappointment. In fact, what psychotherapists have found is that plastic surgery provides the same type of instant gratification as a shopping spree or a vacation; when the newness wears off the feelings of emptiness or sadness creep back in.

In The American Journal of Psychiatry, dated July 2007, studies revealed that the suicide rate of women who received cosmetic breast implants was approximately twice the expected rate based on estimates of the general population. Much like the lotto winner or the movie star, money and fame cannot cure loneliness. The outward appearance and expectations for a generic flawlessness denies the value and worth of authentic inner beauty.

So, how do we lower the huge emotional costs associated with these standards for beauty, the need for accumulation of material goods, and the want for external approval? The only remedy for the false promise of the happiness these goals advertise is authenticity, specifically in the form of a creativity, empathy, and generosity.

Creativity and individuality are in direct contrast with the superficial beauty of society’s generic standards: the Barbie-esque shape, the wrinkleless face, the impec-cable home décor, and/or the brilliant children. The time, money and energy women too often spend on this perception of perfection rob them of valuable moments they could use to pursue fulfilling interests, self exploration and happiness. The freedom from the stress of these unattainable goals often reveals a renewed sense of spontaneity and an inspiration to find happiness in more fulfilling ways.

Authentic empathy starts with the woman herself. In her quest to be the ideal “nice girl,” she may deprive herself of the right to voice her opinions, needs and wants. Once she rids herself of the shame and guilt that comes from the unrealistic, often self imposed, expectations for perfection she is able to relax and feel more at ease with herself as well as connected to her family and friends. As she lets go of self criticism she is often able to let love in and tolerate the flaws of others. By making peace with who she really is, she is able to reveal herself openly, patiently and lovingly.

Generosity flows freely with authenticity. It comes as a result of giving wholeheartedly only what is comfortable for you. Requests for a woman’s time and/or assistance come from all around her. My female patients all too often say that they have a tendency to offer assistance without analyzing their own needs. They then become overwhelmed and end up with misplaced anger and unspoken resentment. My suggestion is then to give the woman permission to say, “I can’t answer right now, let me get back to you.” This response gives them the time to think about the ramification of the request and/or offer. Women have to ask themselves if what they are offering/giving is self-sacrificing or for someone else “taking.”

As we travel in our journey of womanhood let us teach our daughters that they are valuable, worthy and lovable despite being imperfect and flawed.

If you need help setting your personal perfection bar, be sure to call Alina Gastesi-de Armas, Licensed Mental Health Counselor, at A Place for Growth, 954-384-9373, or visit her website www.APlaceforGrowth.com.

I f I had to choose the question I am asked the most, it is, “How much is a divorce?” My friend who also practices family law responds by asking the individual, “How much is

a car?” It may not seem to be a logical response, but in actuality he is making a valid point. You cannot explain how much a car costs anymore than you can explain how much a divorce costs. The price of a car is based upon the type of vehicle you are looking for. There are cars which may cost $18,000 and there are cars which can cost over

$100,000. It obviously depends upon a number of factors which affect the price of a car.The explanation of the cost of a divorce is similar. There are a number of factors

which affect the cost. Unlike a car, however, some of these factors may be beyond an individual’s control. The similarity is that just like each car can be a different price, so can each divorce.

The cost of a divorce is divided into fees and costs. Costs represent funds that are paid to third parties other than the attorney handling the case. They are typically filing fees, costs of a process server, mediation fees, court reporter fees and expert fees such as accountants, psychologists and Guardian ad Litems. Of course, just like a car, not every case requires the above listed costs. Other than the $409 filing fee, the above mentioned costs are not required and are often not necessary. Once again, each case is different.

Attorneys’ fees are based upon billable hours. Each time an attorney performs a task on a case the client is billed for the time necessary to complete the task. The amount that an attorney charges for his/her time is determined by the attorney. You can expect that the more experience an attorney has, the higher his/her hourly rate will be. Obviously, the more time that is spent on a case the greater the cost.

As I previously stated, sometimes the costs are not necessarily within the control of either the client or the attorney. If the other spouse is perhaps being aggressive, then it will result in more time being spent to address this issue. As I previously stated, more time, more fees. Sometimes a judge’s busy schedule will result in the parties having to wait for a hearing or perhaps have to return another day to complete a hearing.

My philosophy is to get a case resolved as quickly as possible. Of course it is also my responsibility to make sure that the client is protected and as such it may not be concluded as quickly as a client would like. Just like a car, every case is different.
