The Demographic Revolution:It’s Here
Our nation faces a demographic revolution as 78 million baby boomers enter their retirement years.
• Thanks to advances in healthcare, the traditional “third stage” of life has expanded.
• Most baby boomers can expect to spend three decades in retirement.
The New “Third Stage” of Life
Plus 50 adults want to stay actively engaged in the workplace, in education and in service opportunities.

Why Focus on Learning for Working Adults?
Primary source of future employees is current workforce.
65% of 2020 Workforce have high school degree, but no postsecondary degree or certificate.

The Initiative focused on positioning the College tomeet the needs of the plus 50 population by: – Enlisting broad-based organizational and
institutional support, starting with the President – Conducting needs assessment to inform planning
for programs and services– Expanding workforce training and career
development and learning/enrichment opportunities

– Identifying a “single point of contact” advisor to provide support services
– Developing branding/marketing/outreach plan
– Creating community partnerships
– Expanding the learning community to include Washington State Community & Technical Colleges and to Pierce County affiliate colleges

The overall goal of the Plus 50 Completion Strategy is to increase the number of plus 50 students that complete degrees, certificates and not-for-credit credentials through:
– Expanding institutional support & coordination
– Continuing to assess needs and collecting data, by working with our institutional researcher

– Focusing on recruitment of plus 50 students with prior credits, but no degree
– Leveraging experience & expertise in workforce development training/retraining in high demand, high growth sectors of the labor market
– Conducting employer roundtables
– Working with faculty & staff to achieve positive classroom experiences and completion outcomes

– Expanding Advisory/Resource Committee to include representation from employer community
– Enhancing outreach/marketing/branding efforts
– Sharing promising practices with learning community, including Pierce County affiliate colleges and other 2-year colleges
– Leveraging resources/grant opportunities and coordinating with other campus initiatives, such as Achieving the Dream, etc.
