At their March 12 public meeting the Board of Su-pervisors voted unanimously to name the park and recreational facilities at the Carriage Hill Subdivision the “Joseph E. Hanusey III Community Park”.

Joe Hanusey was a member of the Plumstead Town-ship Police Department who died while on duty in a tragic car accident, responding to assist another Of-ficer on May 18, 2002. Prior to that, he served as the building inspector for the Township.

Before voting to honor Officer Hanusey by naming the park after him the Supervisors listened to elo-quent and emotional statements from Chief Duane Hasenauer who also read a statement from Officer Hanusey’s widow, Officers in the Department who served with Officer Hanusey, and members of the community including Officer Hanusey’s parents. The Supervisors recognized that naming the park after him would be the ultimate tribute to the way he lived his life and the positive spirit he brought to the com-munity he lived in and served.

CAMP PluMSTEAD

We are sorry to announce that the Township will not be hosting Camp Plumstead this year.

We hope to hold this again next summer at the Joseph E. Hanusey III Community Park

At their March 12 public meeting the Board of Super-visors passed resolutions recognizing Tommy Frederick and Pablo Burch on their attainment of the rank of Eagle Scout.

Tommy has been actively involved with the Boy Scouts of America for eleven years. He planned and performed his required Eagle Project at the Bucks County Fraternal Order of Police, Lodge #PA 53 with members of his Troop and others in the community. The project included re-placing the benches and tops of approximately twenty picnic tables in dire need of repair, as well as designing and modifying several of the tables to make them handi-capped accessible

Pablo has been actively involved with the Boy Scouts of America since he was in the sixth grade. He designed and performed his required Eagle Project for the Peace Valley Nature Center with the help of volunteers. The project included the redirecting of a new trail segment in order to refurbish the overgrown one and repairing the signs for it. The new trail section will offer visitors a safe and scenic path while the brush and plants along the older trail have a chance to regenerate.

Eagle is the highest rank in the Boy Scouts of America and represents outstanding performance in character, citizenship and fitness. Congratulations to both!

The warm weather brings out residents and their ca-nine companions. Our Code Enforcement Department wants to remind all pet owners that we have a local ordinance in place which addresses animal waste on public and private properties.

10 Plumstead Township Newsletter

Project ChildSafe is a nationwide firearm safety education program developed by the National Shooting Sports Foundation that receives funding through a United States Department of Justice grant and the firearm industry. A key goal of the program is to prevent a loaded firearm from being left lying around the house where a child could pick it up and play with it. That’s a tragedy waiting to happen.

We want to promote safe firearm handling and storage practices among all firearm owners in order to reduce the risk of tragic accidents, especially among children.

Plumstead Township Police has received a limited number of safety kits through Project ChildSafe. Safety kits are available on a first come, first served basis at the Plumstead Township Police Department Monday through Friday 8 AM to 4 PM. These locks are intended to provide an effective barrier against young children accessing a firearm in the home. They are not intended to withstand forced entry by an individual determined to defeat the lock by using tools or other aggressive means. We encourage everyone who owns a firearm to store it in a location inaccessible to children or other unauthorized persons. Ammunition should be stored in a separate location.

The cable-style lock supplied in this Project ChildSafe kit should be used in addition to, and not as a substitute for, safe firearms handling and storage methods. As a firearms owner, it is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to know how to safely handle and securely store your firearms.

There is a firearm safety brochure that is included with the gun lock which is just as important as the lock itself. It explains the importance of safe handling and secure firearm storage in the home. Everyone is encouraged to read it and follow its advice.

We feel that if even one accident or death can be prevented through Project ChildSafe, the program will have been worth the effort.

Progress is attained when everyone pushes together……in the same direction.

That is exactly what has been happening- a lot of people causing PROGRESS. The initial concept of a Veterans’ Park has evolved from a design class of Delaware Valley College (DelVal) students and Quercus Studios, Township Supervisors, Township employees and the volunteers of the Plumstead Township Veterans’ Committee to a Concept Drawing, working construction and site plans and a set of Bid Specifications.

A Request for Proposals/Bids was released on April 2, 2013. Bids were opened on April 24, 2013. The target date for completion of the Park is early October. Plans for the Park’s dedication on November 9 coincides with the Township’s Annual observance of Veterans’ Day.

Look for copies of the concept drawing of the Park at the Township Building and as you visit local businesses, banks, and the Plumstead Volunteer Fire Department’s Embers Restaurant.

To commemorate the Park, a Commemorative (Challenge) Coin has been designed. On one side of the coin, are the seals of the five branches of the military encircling the Township’s seal. The opposite side has a depiction (in color) of the Park. Donors of $20 or more will receive a Commemorative Coin; a framed Concept drawing of the Park and two Coins (showing each side) will be given to those who donate $500 and over. These donations will be used for further enhancements of the Park’s design.

We are endeavoring to capture names of Plumstead’s Veterans dating back to the 1740s. Reproductions of Plumsteadville’s and Gardenville’s Honor Roll boards (WWII) were Eagle Scout projects of Nicholas DeSalvo and Mitch Buttala (respectively) and will be located within the Park. The Committee is seeking information about Danboro’s and Point Pleasant’s Honor Roll Boards for future replication.

Forms will be available to capture names, rank, branch of service and dates of service, if known. If you wish to make a donation, you may use the same form. Forms will be available at the Township Building, the Embers and some local businesses. You may also contact Jerry Fox at [email protected] for additional information.

On April 20th, the Environmental Advisory Council (EAC) was joined by residents, members of the Parks and Rec-reation Advisory Committee, Township Supervisors and a representative of Pennsylvania’s Bureau of Forestry, for the 8th annual tree-planting event in honor of Arbor Day. Six maple trees were planted along Miriam Drive in Doyle-stown. Over the past two years, the EAC has organized the planting of 23 trees along Miriam Drive!

The EAC would like to thank everyone who par-ticipated, the Township for obtaining grant money for the trees, as well as the Public Works Department and Shan-Gri-La Contrac-tors, LLC for their assis-tance with the planting.

Saturday, April 27 saw the official opening of the Born Learning Trail in Landis Park. Part of the United Way’s “Success by Six” program, the trail is designed to foster an interactive experience for young children, their parents, grandparents and caregivers. The trail will also introduce young children to the beauty and value of the outdoors and encourage an attitude of stewardship in them as they grow up.

This is the first trail of its kind in Bucks County and the United Way of Bucks County is planning a community cel-ebration of this achievement at Landis Park in the near future. Stay tuned for details.

Commissioner Rob Loughery attended the Board of Supervisors public meeting held on March 26. Commis-sioner Loughery stated that one of his goals is to visit all the municipalities in Bucks County, which he began to do last year. He spoke about the County’s budget process and the deficit it faced which forced a reduction in the workforce, while not increasing taxes this year. He noted better efficiencies in County government operations and the reduction in the budget as reasons why the County was able to maintain its AAA bond rating. He also spoke about the progress on the Justice Center, stating in ap-proximately three months the building will be enclosed.

He discussed the County’s economic development ini-tiative and utilizing the staff of the County Planning Commission to partner with municipalities on projects. He noted 26 municipalities have contacted the County with a variety of projects for their community initiatives. Plumstead Township is one of those municipalities and will be working with the County Planning Commission to investigate possible improvements to the area along Route 611 in the Plumsteadville area.

uncovering Our History

We all know one man’s trash is another man’s treasure and the Township’s Historic Society is looking for such “treasures”.

If you are cleaning out your home and have old documents relating to the Township that are tucked away in an attic, basement or desk drawer please consider donating them to the Historic Society for their archives.

Our community’s past is an important part of what it is today, and the Committee would love to hear from you.

Please contact the Township office and we will put you in touch with someone.
