Congratulations to our
2019 ScholarShip WinnerSThe Baldwin County Home Builders Association
awarded $7,000 in annual scholarships to local students. Since 1997, the BCHBA has awarded scholarships to deserving students pursuing careers in the home building industry. Qualifying students must be enrolled in construction-related studies in a technical school or college. To date, the Association has awarded $97,600 in scholarships to help students in Baldwin County prepare for careers in the home building industry. The Association is reaching out to students to encourage them to pursue a career in the building industry. We strive to assist them in their pursuit, whether it be as a builder, architect, engineer, plumber, carpenter, electrician, welder, landscaper, etc. There is a dire need for skilled individuals. The BCHBA’s 2019 Scholarship Committee included Chris Farlow - BCHBA President, Chris Bumpers - Associate Council Chairman, Joe Hocklander - Scholarship Committee Member, Fran Druse - Executive Vice President.
Anna CriswellAnna plans to enroll in a College of Architecture, Design and Construction program at Mississippi State. “I anticipate being inspired by the design process, and learning more about creativity of designs around the world. Eventually, I plan to work for a firm alongside other architects to fine-tune my skills” The daughter of Rodney Criswell and Donna Gillis of Silverhill, Anna attends Roberstdale High School and has been Vice President of the Mu Alpha Theta Math Honor Society, Cheer Captain and volunteer with the Baldwin County Community Alliance. Anna works at the Next Level Tumbling and Training Center.
David “Rich” Conway IVDavid presently attends Coastal Alabama Community College but intends to pursue Civil Engineering at Auburn University. “Structural Engineering interests me because I’m interested in the stability and strength of a building or structure and how to make them more resilient. Being from the Gulf Coast area, the way bridges, houses and roads are built is extremely important.” The son of Rick and Michelle Conway of Foley, AL, David is Vice President of the National Honor Society and Mu Alpha Theta mathematics honor society. He has an interest in farming because it’s a challenging outdoor activity and has worked at Krupinski Farms in the summer.
Hudson ArnoldHudson intends to attend Auburn University and study Civil or Structural Engineering. “My granddad is a retired civil engineer, and after I was able to see some of the work he did with new subdivisions, I became interested in civil engineering. My goal after graduation is to work with a general contractor as a project manager or the US Army Corps of Engineers. I am confident an engineering degree from Auburn University will help me achieve my goals.” Hudson is the son of Neal and Jennifer Arnold of Daphne and attends Daphne High School. He is a member of Mu Alpha Theta and the National Honor Society. In his spare time he loves to draw and plays tennis. In the summer he worked as a laborer with Ben M. Radcliff Contractors.

Michael WentworthMicheal attends Auburn University in the Building Science/Construction Management Program. “After graduating from McWhorter School of Building Science, I plan to work for a major residential construction company or form my own company. One area that interests me is LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification. LEED provides a framework to create healthy, high efficient and cost-saving green homes and buildings.” The son of Joe and Jennifer Alberstadt of Daphne, Michael has participated in varsity track, the Lott Leadership Summer Institute, EMERGE Leadership Program and Model United Nations. His interests include serving the homeless through volunteer work and he has worked for Corte Tree Farm and Ponder Lawn Maintenance.
Bryan RobertsBryan is currently enrolled at Auburn University, majoring in Building Science. “A degree in Building Science will allow me to follow my passion for creating as a career for the rest of my life. I want to work for a larger commercial general contractor as a project manager or superintendent after graduation. My appreciation for craftsmanship and quality work may one day draw me back to high-end home building.” The son of Todd and Jill Roberts of Fairhope, Alabama, Bryan is a member of the Associated General Contractors Student Sector at Auburn. Bryan loves carpentry and worked full time for Pitman Brown Building Company while attending Coastal Alabama Community College at night.
Hayden MasonHayden is currently enrolled at Coastal Alabama Community College but plans to study Civil Engineering at the University of South Alabama. “The goal for my career is to graduate from the University of South Alabama with a degree in Civil Engineering with an emphasis on Geotechnical Engineering. Geotechnical is crucial in ensuring that a particular soil or ground type can support a home.” The son of Brian and Anna Mason of Fairhope, Alabama, Hayden is an active member of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society. Hit the road with the HBAA “little man”!
The HBAA’s new specialty license plates are here! When you purchase one, you’ll not only help promote the HBAA brand, but you’ll also be supporting trade education, as the fees associated with the specialty plate go to the Alabama Home Builders Foundation.
HOW DO I GET THE HBAA LICENSE PLATE?When you go to the DMV to renew your car tag, tell them that you want to purchase the Home Builder specialty plate.
I RESERVED MY HBAA LICENSE PLATE LAST YEAR. HOW DO I GET IT NOW?When your car tag comes up for renewal, take the voucher you received from the Alabama Department of Revenue to
your local DMV and pay for the associated registration fees. the new HBAA license plate will be mailed to you and you’ll soon be driving around with the “little man”!
The more HBAA license plates that are sold, the more money we are able to put toward supporting building trades education throughout Alabama, and the more our “little man” brand will be seen out on the road across the state!

Robert Dietz - NAHB Chief Economist
Mixed housing data over the last two weeks reveal a market struggling with an ongoing housing affordability challenge. Low unemployment, solid household
formations, and accelerating income growth are supporting for-sale and for-rent housing demand. But despite lower mortgage interest rates (currently averaging 4.2% on a 30-year fixed-rate mortgage), high housing prices have held back sales volume growth, especially in the resale market. For example, existing home sales declined 4.9% in March and were 5.4% lower than the number of sales recorded a year ago.
For new home construction, single-family builders reported slightly more positive conditions in April, according to the NAHB/Wells Fargo Housing Market Index. However, Census Bureau data indicate that single-family starts for the first quarter of 2019 were 5.3% lower than the year prior, and below what NAHB had forecast. All regions of the United States recorded declines — except the South, which improved by 5%. Additionally, multifamily construction was down 19% at the start of the year, compared to the first quarter of 2018. Running counter to the existing home sales and construction reports, new single-family home sales improved in March, up nearly 5% from the previous month. Inventory fell back to a six-month supply, down from December’s high point of a 7.4-month supply. Sales growth was recorded at the lower end of the market, with 50% of new home sales priced below $300,000, compared to 39% a year ago. Median prices fell from $335,400 in March 2018 to $302,700 in March 2019. The combination of product shift and price incentives, in tandem with lower rates, caused the pace of sales for the month to increase. Although this is promising news, it raises concerns for builders’ future profit margins, given the ongoing growth in construction and regulatory costs.
