1NOVEMBER | DECEMBER 2012

Welcome to Plug & Playout Magazine, the bi-monthly e-publication dedicated to television channel in-a-box technologies for broadcasting digital television and radio over the internet.

A new generation of IT-based workflow has emerged over the past few years that allow everyone from seasoned broadcasters, independent producers, creative professionals, journalists and production houses to launch their own in-house broadcast-grade television channels and networks thanks to a new breed of 'television-studio-in-a-box' technologies.

From live-events to micro-studios, from pre-recorded and looped playout of specialist content created for niche market audiences, the cost of launching a single television channel or a micro broadcast network has dropped from millions to a few thousand and is now within reach of most budgets.

Plug & Playout Magazine focuses exclusively on broadcast-grade hardware and software designed for live-event and round-the-clock internet television playout. The products and services we cover in this publication are applicable to all levels of the industry with emphasis on professional level business users looking for fully integrated, affordable, end-to-end broadcasting solutions.

Each month brings a raft of new products and developments that are revolutionizing the way television is created, delivered and consumed, our aim is to present the highest quality cost-effective technologies to create a viable internet broadcasting business.

PLAYOUT

2NOVEMBER | DECEMBER 2012

Plug & Playout Magazine will showcase a select range of new technologies that allow creative professionals to launch broadcast-grade, digital television and radio channels at a fraction of the cost of traditional installations.

Our focus is on affordable end-to-end workflow solutions for single or multi-camera, live-event or studio broadcasting from 'ingest to playout', as well as pre-recorded file-based HD output using the latest television-channel-in-a-box' technology.

The past few years have seen major developments in broadcast technology that has slashed the cost-of-entry into the world of professional broadcasting and offer a new level of quality and playout capability from these latest hardware and software innovations.

This new technology is allowing content creators to compete with the largest broadcasters in terms of production and distribution quality, and with internet delivery of hi-definition video being used by mainstream television broadcast networks to reach audiences across connected devices such as mobile phones, computers, tablets, set-top-boxes and connected televisions, there has never been a better time to launch your own television channel or digital radio station.

Plug & Playout Magazine is all about how to make use of this new and affordable technology and create a viable internet broadcast business that can turn your content in to valuable revenue and give you the ultimate creative vehicle.

We hope that this publication will offer an insight into products, services, and ideas that will inspire you to “think inside the box”.

see you on a connected screen soon!

Tom Thumbs

Looking at the challenges from a different angle can bring more perspective to the equation. Typical hardware-based players or set-top-box solutions don't come cheap and although connected-TV delivery of content is set to become the standard video delivery method given time to evolve and mature, there are cost-effective alternatives that won't break the bank in the meantime.

Forward, store, and play can be an ideal means of delivering content in pristine HD quality if your channel broadcasts loop-based content. Not all internet broadcasting is or needs to be live-around-the-clock, in fact there are few if any channels that broadcast 24/7 and those that do, such as TwiT TV play out a mix of pre-recorded as well as live programing, so loop-based programing of niche content, played back from a local source, can be an ideal way to establish your own internet television channel with minimum investment.

shrinking the costs of internet broadcastingBlues

Reducing the cost and the complexity of creating your own internet television network to the size and functionality of a thumb-drive may sound like stretching-the-envelope a bit far, but creating a financially viable broadcast business can be quick to set up and relatively inexpensive to fund. Creating a private network tv channel to distribute your own programming can of course be an expensive proposition. Controlling content via a set-top-box network involves individual players attached to end-point television screens and excessively priced middleware is required to monitor the health of your network all adding enormous expense on top of the cost of individual players, and not forgetting installation and maintenance costs which will soon add up to a final figure well beyond the reach of even those with relatively deep pockets. So, how can you reduce costs substantially while maintaining maximum quality and minimum maintenance?

Just Like

So, consider a flash thumb drive network as an alternative to high priced hardware-based black-box systems. Several advances have brought the humble thumb drive into the digital broadcast world of today. Wireless sticks that can store and play-back 1920 x 1080 full-hd content are an inexpensive option that can be ideally suited to establishing a low-cost, low maintenance, private network television channel.

Consider including an LG2TB Super Multi NAS with Blu-Ray re-writer to add a further level of sophistication to your network with automated backup of assets to blu-ray and file creation / naming of archived material, no manual intervention required, the unit supports data rates of 10/100/1000 Mbps, accepts SD,MMC, MS, xD memory cards and file transferring over the internet via ftp, and the unit is DLNA certified providing the ideal end-point media server to get content to local flash drives.

Connected to an end-point wireless router content can be delivered to tv's in different rooms, buildings, cities, countries or continents. EzSign TV units are commercial grade with features not found in standard models. Starting your own television network has never been so Ez!

The latest LG EzSign TV editor software v 2.0 is a free application and now supports wireless flash drive content updating and is available in 9 languages. You can connect a staggering 251 tv's on the same network offering expansion opportunities rarely seen in signage applications at such a price-point.

EzSign TV can also be an ideal solution for community television channels looking to establishing a low-cost broadcast footprint that offers basic but powerful playback options. Also included in the package are high-quality pre-made templates that cover business sectors such as real estate, financial services, fashion, retail, restaurants, healthcare, leisure and are visually and creatively far ahead of competitor signage products.

More adventurous broadcasters can take advantage of vpn networking technology to deliver content over intranet/extranet connections to securely shared folders on local NAS terminals where EzSign content can be updated wirelessly. EzSign TV software includes date and time scheduling of content making playback reckless simple!

LG EzSign TV

LG SuperSign

The beauty of a thumb-drive network is the ease of roll-out and almost zero maintenance, and wireless sticks allow content to be updated over the internet and delivered to television screens looping the content from a local source until the next scheduled update that cab be an attractive option for channel operators who don't need 'live' programming. A further advantage is zero streaming and bandwidth costs associated with this delivery method, further improving network operating costs.

Two solutions from LG Electronics that offer advanced features and ease of use are the LG SuperSign and EzSignTV signage applications. Both solutions come with free software that is simple to use yet sophisticated in features with both allowing content to be saved/delivered to thumb drives as well as to hardware players. The LG SuperSign signage application is an exceptionally good product and should be on your must-try list if you are looking for a professional level robust package that can be customized for typical signage applications or for private channel distribution of content.

The all new LG EzSignTV product is the 'lite' version of SuperSign but still packs a lot in to a deceptively small package. EzSignTV can deliver to single or multiple locations and can be employed as an in-store point-of-purchase solution to drive sales of your products and services, or if your network is spread out geographically EzSignTV can provide reliable real-time distribution of content that costs less than most stand-alone hardware players and there is no expensive end-point licenses required!

Page 8: Plug and Playout Magazine

The definition of a tv channel-in-a-box is fluid and means different things to different people, variants include ad-hoc hardware that forms part of larger and despicably expensive broadcast solutions and are vastly distant in from and factor from the basic box-concept understood by most internet broadcasters.

Essentially, television channel-in-a-box is an IT-based solution that features all the necessary components you would need from ingest to playout residing in a single box. Several automated systems on the market offer all the requisite components that can be added separately or as needed giving small broadcasters the option to add components as their business grows and reducing the initial financial costs of launching a small internet television channel or network.

Contrary to popular belief among some industry experts who maintain that no one-size-fits-all product can provide a robust enough solution to guarantee rock-solid 24/7 playout, there is one product that turns that argument on its head, GenesiX One, television playout, but not as we know it.

Austrian broadcast specialist Stryme have produced a system that ticks all the boxes, and more! Stryme have quietly been refining their channel-in-a-box technology and have recently released their GenesiX V2 and GenesiX Live products.

What sets this system apart from the many others on the market that claim to be all things to all broadcasters is the deep feature set that spares nothing and gives everything. With the GenesiX One channel-in-a-box system you won't need to accept less at the launch of your channel in the hope that you can grow revenues sufficiently to add-on the missing parts of the workflow as you evolve, you get it all, right from the moment your channel goes live-to-air!

GenesiX One is a serious product for serious broadcasters whether they are small internet start-ups or large mainstream networks, this system can deliver and has already proven its worth in real world broadcast television environments.

From production to ingest to final composition of material ready for playout, including on-air graphics, bugs, logos, crawls and seamless interfacing with facility equipment, keeping everything in the same box has an indisputable attraction, and where other solutions fail to live up to their hype, GenesiX delivers, and with style.

More importantly, when the final financial analysis is done, GenesiX offers rapid ROI and greater long-term operating stability than almost any other solution available at the same price point. Launching a 24/7 television channel can be a hugely expensive proposition but GenesiX offers a true network solution at an accessible price.

The component parts of the GenesiX One system include absolutely every feature needed to run a 24/7 single channel station or full network.

The system can accommodate single or multi-channel playout, it includes as standard many features found as expensive add-ons in other systems such as asset management, transcoding, library, crash recording, traffic management and much, much more.

GenesiX supports all major codecs and formats and can capture live, scale, and ingest your source feeds without the need of additional expensive third-party components.

The system handles equally well 'dealy' and can synchronize video and audio separately. The library feature allows XML management of video footage, audio, graphics and other on-air elements with freely editable metadata, automatic thumbnail generation previews of material are displayed with full filter and search functionality.

Playout includes modules for planning, managing and ensuring recurring tasks are completed efficiently and quickly either manually or automated.

An integrated software VTR offers frame accurate digitization of footage and automated ingest, loop recording and batch capturing provides all the functionality needed to run a 24/7 broadcast operation with complete confidence.

GenesiX also has built-in CG capabilities for overlays, automated insertions, alpha-channeling, plus GPI and router support and simultaneous up/down scaling with full local area networking capabilities.

If you are considering launching a community television station or a single or multi-channel network requiring sophisticated features normally found in enterprise-grade solutions then GenesiX is the system that will give you everything is a single box!

The GenesiX solution is by far the most comprehensive channel-in-a-box product on the market, boldly going where no other channel-in-a-box system goes!

The streaming revolution continues with the launch of the StreamStar webcast case from the company who brought us the now retired BCC Broadcast Case.

This latest iteration of their flagship product packs everything you need for live-event broadcasting into a single hand-held briefcase. The StreamStar webcast case is squarely aimed at webcasters and every effort has been taken to ensure that this product is packed for performance.

The case has been trialed successfully at major league sporting events including ice-hockey, tennis and football and software improvements in the unit, particularly the UI is a step way beyond what you expect from such a compact unit.

StreamStar have rebuilt the UI from the ground up and the intuitive interface offers fast access to every feature of the system with touch-screen switching at the heart of it, and with its iPad-friendly format it lends its self perfectly to a new generation of web tv producers.

Additional functionality enables insertion of 3 video layers above the camera layers is included for:

DVI IN Layer – top most layer GRAPHIC OVERLAYS – for insertion of graphics or animations, also supports transparencyLOGO – layer for the insertion of a production logo, or a bug.

The features are operated from the INSERTS section of the GUI and switched by tapping/clicking on the preview button.

Where space is a problem when working in a busy environment, to save precious desktop space and to eliminate unnecessary hardware the Webcast Case can be operated by a touch screen allowing the operator to work comfortably and focus on the creative process. A keyboard and a mouse can also be attached for situations where space is not at a premium.

The company's extensive experience of broadcast television production work over the years has brought the designers of the StreamStar Case to the conclusion that the traditional methods of switching needed radical change and they have redesigned the process to suit modern, fast paced webcasting production situations and have arrived at a more efficient way of switching for the new webcasting production environment. Easy to operate tactile UI that is instantly familiar to the new digital generation of media producers means they have dispensed with the traditional T-Bar in favour of total touch-control of cutting and fading!

Anyone getting misty-eyed and “sentimental”, fear not, the designers make a bold promise – once you try it, you won’t miss it!

8NOVEMBER | DECEMBER 2012

At the heart of the Webcast Case Live production system is a proprietary, built-in H.264 encoder, capable of direct streaming to many popular streaming platforms.

A selection of pre-loaded profiles are available to producers. All can be modified and new custom streaming profiles can be created from scratch providing unmatched flexibility.

Every parameter of the streaming profile is adjustable and newly created custom streaming profiles can be stored for future use.

So, in conclusion, reducing all aspects of a live production from a ten-ton truck to an executive briefcase is the real revolution with a brave new world waiting for those wise enough to see the financial and manpower benefits of this new technology.

Man-in-a-suitcase was certainly ahead of its time, the revolution will be televised...

Are Youon theSquare?

Some times real-time means down-time. Apps are abundant, many lay claim to be the first, the best, the only.... but one app whose claims can be easily verified is from the brethren of the digital cloth at GoSquared, when they say real-time, they really do mean real-time.

Anyone familiar with a Reuters dealing screen can attest to the fact that stats can be sexy and nowhere more so that those delivered at lightening speed by GoSquared.

In the world of broadcast television image is everything and GoSquared definitely has the x-factor when it comes to analytic looks.

Beyond the cosmetics however reveal a deep functionality that many similar services lack, the look and feel of GoSquared analytics are pleasing, intuitive and place information in logical order.

Mapview offers real-time push-pin visuals of who is on your site via a cool interactive world map with a granularity that reveals everything you need to asses business opportunities including country location, web browser, O/S, IP address, ISP, screen resolution, page views, average time spent on your site, social integration with Twitter and a lot more under the hood.

Additional integration with Drupal, Magento, Joomla, Shopify and more offer unique flexibility when crunching numbers for a bigger picture of your opportunities.

Page 13: Plug and Playout Magazine

10NOVEMBER | DECEMBER 2012

A major part of the attraction of the GoSquared service is undoubtedly their API.

Media, entertainment and broadcast companies can create custom applications geared to their particular business or industry sector and go beyond standard data collection to develop integrated plugins for their specific markets.

One area where customization of the GoSquared service could be invaluable is in live-event streaming for example. The ability to see viewers in real-time, integrate ticketing, merchandising, VOD and pay-per-view applications can expanded revenue opportunities exponentially if integrated into pay-wall technology.

For digital radio stations and IPTV operators GoSquared custom designed applications could extent to developing tools that can replace prohibitively expensive middleware services and offer set-top-box operators with a wealth of data and functionality that is currently the preserve of enterprise-level telcos.

So, pushing a square peg into a round hole may prove to be more rewarding for those with imaginative uses for real-time data collection.

Some exciting broadcast data developments may be on the horizon from within the GoSquared Matrix....... watch this channel......

DaVinci color correctors are the standard in post production since 1984. There are thousands of colorists worldwide who understand the performance, quality and workflow of DaVinci and love it as their trusted partner in creativity.

Blackmagic Design has certified multiple GPU-Xpander models and configurations for use with all current versions of Resolve; OSX, Linux, and the new Microsoft® Windows versions of DaVinci Resolve.

Xpander Desktop adds the PCIe x16 slots needed in Apple® Mac Pro systems for Resolve colorists to take advantage of Resolve's multi GPU-accelerated features such as Noise Reduction, realtime r3d decoding of 4K material, plus grading and monitoring of stereoscopic 2K material require 1 or more NVIDIA® Quadro 4000 / FX 4800 for Mac graphics cards hosted in a Xpander Desktop system.

Using Xpander systems enables Resolve customers the ability to use multiple GPU cards and RED Rocket cards without sacrificing slots normally reserved for HBA, RAID, or capture cards. Between the number of Xpander models optimized for use with Resolve 9 and the variety of 3rd party components available and certified for Resolve 9, "  there are literally hundreds of possible slot configurations between the Mac Pro and the PCIe expansion chassis", per DaVinci's Resolve configuration guide.

Cubix Xpander Desktop 4 and Rackmount 8 products are certified by Blackmagic Design for use with DaVinci Resolve 8 for Linux (Desktop 4 for Windows configurations), and provides customers with all of the benefits of the OS-X version, plus maximum GPU scalability for monitoring and grading in realtime of uncompressed 4K material, stereoscopic monitoring, and the maximum imaging performance possible using multiple NVIDIA state of the art GPUs and multiple RED® Rocket cards.

Industry professionals choose GPU-accelerated applications such as AVID Media Composer 6, Adobe Creative Suite 6, Apple Final Cut, Sony Vegas and others to help them create production content for both television broadcast and cinematic purposes. Why not maximize the useful life cycle of your existing workstation instead of replacing it? Cubix GPU-Xpanders are a key component of doing just that!

Until recently, hosting more than one or two discrete GPUs - plus I/O capture, RAID, SAN and other PCIe-based adapter cards - meant replacing entire workstations and servers with high-end, speciality workstations featuring four or more PCIe x16 expansion slots. Deploying these systems meant bucking corporate purchasing standards, creating more heat and noise in the workplace, and spending two or three times more money than deploying standard desktop workstation hardware.

Cubix Corporation developed its GPU-Xpander product line for NLE customers who want to scale PCIe slot expansion beyond their current hardware specs, but without replacing the entire workstation! In this article Hub Urlings from M²Sat Holland will focus on the first part of the chain: how to contribute professional broadcast quality video material from breaking news sites or an event location back to the studio in the most (cost!) efficient way. In particular we are going to describe how IP satellite streaming is changing the face of the broadcast industry and how you can benefit from this technology.

The trend : IP-video solutions providing more live broadcasts at lower costs. Along with the growth of the global news and event sector comes a requirement from Broadcasters and AV production companies for live video contribution for live TV and internet shows. This requires the availability of a dedicated contribution channel to send the video from the news or event location back to the studio. Depending on the video quality that is needed for this type of connection, it can range between 1 Mbps for a Live internet video connection up to 20 Mbps or higher for the HD coverage during the Olympics. This is traditionally the area of Satellite News Gatherers that provide these connections via satellite, certainly as in the past good terrestrial connections were expensive and difficult to order.

23NOVEMBER | DECEMBER 2012

Satelliteof Love

These times are over however as we see in a growing number of fixed event locations like stadiums, concert halls, event locations, conference centers or city halls, many have a fixed terrestrial infrastructure such as cable, DSL or glasfibre that can be used to take the connection back to the studio.

Connection costs using these existing facilities at the news or event location are now a fraction of the satellite costs and fall within the budget of most live shows. News and event locations however do not always have a good terrestrial internet connection at hand, but have this inherent tendency to take place without good connectivity. This is the area where satellite contribution solutions such as those used by SNG crews will remain the only reliable option.

The last-leg of any broadcast workflow is playout and the internet has redefined transport streams and formats for both audio and video content and nowhere more so than in the realm of live-event streaming. Whether you are a broadcaster uplinking a breaking news story, a rock band streaming a concert performance or a micro internet broadcaster such as TWiT TV streaming live 24/7, challenges are found at every twist and turn of the cable and no where more so than in event production, enter IP over Satellite, at an accessible price point for any broadcaster, the doors to live-event streaming have been thrown wide open.

IP Satellite Streaming is gaining visibility among internet broadcasters in the live-event space. M²Sat from Holland are leading the way with this

IP Sat Streaming

A new feature of the SNGstreamer 2.0 is the multilink gateway (MLG) that allows the use of any available IP-network to contribute the video to the studio. The Multi Link Gateway makes the best or cheapest IP network connection via satellite, 3G/wireless or a cable connection, without complicated IP configuration at the uplink location. It’s special ADSL enhancer even enables high quality video connections via shared IP networks like ADSL, cable internet or corporate networks. Connected with a drum of plain ethernet cable the unit can use any terrestrial internet connections like ADSL, cable-internet or corporate networks at the news/event location to contribute the video to your studio at low cost.

Existing (consumer) internet and mobile network connections may promise some speed but are always offered asymmetrically and on a shared basis. This means that the bandwidth for the upload of the video is shared with other users, and for that reason public networks are not reliable enough for a good quality live video feed aimed at a large audience.

The only reliable means of getting video from the news or event location back to the studio is via satellite. New technological breakthroughs like IP and MPEG-4 encoding are offering new perspectives for SNG and Satellite IP streaming. These developments have had a dramatic impact on the SNG sector as IP technology covers large areas of the SNG infrastructure, and we are now seeing a new breed of IP SNG systems starting to spread into the market.

Below we will describe how such a typical IP-SNG infrastructure would look and how the new M2sat SNGstreamer 2.0 system takes the lead in the development of a fully IP-based video contribution infrastructure that is fully compatible with digital workflow systems and IP-based distribution networks for live video streams.

NGstreamer 2.0 now features multi network capability via satellite, both wireless and wired. The SNGstreamer 2.0 system is built for newsgathering and event broadcasting purposes and combines the high reliability of satellite communications for video contribution from a breaking news site with the low cost for live video connection using terrestrial internet connections for longer live news shows from on-site locations back to the TV studio. The satellite part in the system works via Ku-band satellites as well as the new Eutelsat Ka-band system in Europe (Newsspotter), however, the SNGstreamer 2.0 works equally well via “normal” terrestrial connections (.g. ADSL! That is good news for broadcasters and AV-companies as this brings a huge reduction in connection costs and therefor lower operational costs. Connection costs can go down to virtually nothing bringing live TV shows or day long reports from local events within reach of local and regional broadcasters. The system provides a perfect match for the needs of local AV production companies and broadcasters seeking a reliable, cost efficient and easy to use video contribution system to realize their goal of providing more live TV / Internet shows to their customers and viewers for lower costs.

SNGstreamer 2.0 is the culmination of ten years of IP-SNG experience helping you meet the future and is a state-of-the-art, reliable and low cost 'live' video contribution solution built upon third generation technology of the M2sat SNGstreamer satellite platform and now offering IP-SNG solutions with end-to-end connections to TV stations and regional broadcasters for the past 10 years.

Page 28: Plug and Playout Magazine

25NOVEMBER | DECEMBER 2012

IP Sat StreamingThe encoder/decoder platform used in the system has been proven in the field and is based on the latest generation IP-video technology. The platform works on standard IT hardware with IP-video software rather than on legacy dedicated hardware units. The main advantage is that the video platform can be extended easy and at very low cost by adding software licenses. Another main advantage of the encoding platform is that it is based on a two-channel setup that supports both MPEG-2 and MPEG-3, SD and HD and can be connected to existing studio infrastructure either via SDI or via IP-Streams. The latter of course making it easy to distribute the live IP-video streams via an internet distribution platform to the myriad of internet devices around the world.

As many broadcasters have to work with changing crews and limited technical support in the studio, the connectivity part and the video encoding/decoding of the SNGstreamer 2.0 is integrated into one easy to operate solution that can be operated by any camera crew.

In short, the M2sat SNGstreamer 2.0 is a complete multinetwork video contribution solution that can be easily integrated with existing MPEG-2 video infrastructure in the studio with future extension towards MPEG-4 and IP-based video workflow systems.

Driving down connection costsThe multilink gateway allows a considerable savings on connection costs as satellite transmission costs are still charged by the minute and very expensive and have a very short return-on-investment cycle.

We see however that broadcasters over time get better contacts at regular locations for news or event productions like theatres, city halls, sport venues, stadiums, conference locations etc, and broadcasters can use their terrestrial IP-connections there, often for free, and thereby eliminate their connection costs. With the M2sat Multinetwork Gateway we expect to see more and more use of “normal” ADSL connections as provided by local companies or individuals. Connection costs are then reduced to zero because most parties happily co-operate with (local or regional) TV broadcasters, especially as this does not generate extra costs to them, the connection is there and already paid for.

In particular if the broadcaster needs more regular live programming on their TV station, e.g. like 1 hour in the morning every workday and 1 hour in the afternoon (= 10 hours per week), the MultiNework functionality is earned back quickly.

Video encoding/decoding platform ready to connect broadcasters to the internetM2sat is using a new generation video technology that has already proven itself in the field. The time of point to point encoder-decoder connections on dedicated encoding hardware is over for this new generation and is being replaced by flexible systems that work on a standard PC platform and IP-video software licences. This has a major impact on investment and maintenance costs (standard IT equipment) and provides a very flexible system.

A major advantage of the encoder/decoder included in the M2Sat platform is the scalability and low costs per extra (contribution or distribution) channel. With the simple download of a software key additional video channels can be added without the need to purchase additional encoding/decoding hardware.

M2sat SNGstreamer 2.0: providing more value for moneyThe first generation M²Sat SNGstreamer focused on reducing operational costs for uplinking news and event videos from remote locations to the studio by more than 50% using MPEG-4 video encoding and due to the fact that no satellite communications engineer is needed at the uplink site.

The second generation SNGstreamer also brings down overall production costs due to it’s easy integration with existing video infrastructure in the studio. With the M²SatStreamer systems broadcasters now stream the live video in parallel to all internet devices.

When you add it all up, the SNGstreamer 2.0 takes you to a whole new level.

With this the system is future ready, certainly in a situation where the number of live video sources for (regional) broadcasters is growing continuously. We are already seeing regional TV stations installing fixed cameras in city halls, theaters, stadiums, conference locations etc, that send their live video feeds directly to the studio.

M2sat encoder/decoder platform offers: *The possibility to stream two parallel video streams, one to the studio and one live to the internet (e.g. in case of breaking news) *Compatibility both with the existing MPEG-2 infrastructure in regional TV studios and optional MPEG-4 infrastructure if present.

M2sat taking newsgathering to the next levelWith the M²Sat SNGstreamer 2.0 we are introducing a radical new video contribution solution that will take satellite news gathering to the next level:

*Provide broadcasters, AV companies and newsgatherers with the lowest costs for the contribution of their live video *IP-SNG system provides standard IP services like FTP, Voice over IP, internet browsing in the uplink unit and offers remote office connectivity for the SNG crew.*It is fully compatible with any MPEG-4/MPEG-2 based video infrastructure at the studio.*It allows broadcasters to distribute live news videos not only to TV but at the same time also accross all IP devices such as PC, laptop, iPad, Smartphones, Tablets, etc. *Live broadcast-quality video uplinking with SNGstreamer 2.0 now come at substantially lower costs and at the same time have a larger audience!

Who can benefit of the M2sat SNGstreamer? The M²Sat SNGstreamer meets the requirements of everybody that is looking to add more live news coverage in their news shows but within tight production budgets. Also it is for those that in parallel to their tv work want to exploit the full potential of live online video:

*Public and Commercial Broadcasters *Satellite News Gathering companies and News Show Production Teams*Regional and Local broadcasting organisations*Video Production Companies

Extremely user friendly and easy to operateSetting up a live video link is extremely simple at locations where no terrestrial networks are available. The SNG vehicle crew / AV team park the vehicle with a clear south view, switch on the power to let the antenna find the satellite. They then contact the studio and ask them to bring up the satellite link by remote control. After confirmation from the studio the satellite link is up, with a push on the button the cameraman starts the transmission and sends live video directly from the vehicle to the studio or the internet.

Infinite Uplink replaces the need for expensive satellite or video fiber allowing broadcast signals to be distributed globally over the Internet. The Infinite Uplink technology has several unique features facilitating the most flexible contribution system on the market today. Infinite uplink is designed to optimize the Internet connectivity. This is especially relevant for venue based production. Usually the day before the event Internet connectivity checks out fine during testing. The day of the event however, the Internet capacity gets unreliable. Infinite Uplink can blast through that congestion making the Internet reliable for delivering a high quality video feed. Octoshape’s Infinite Uplink takes geography out of the equation. Encoders can be placed in Singapore delivering 6 Mbps contribution feeds, and multiple playout boxes can be deployed around the world to receive that signal in high quality. The Octoshape transport technology also has very advanced and flexible transport protocol options. As an example, a facility housing fifty playout devices all tuned to the same contribution feed only require one stream into the facility from the Internet rather than fifty (or one per device). Infinite Uplink technology intelligently distributes the signal among the playout devices inside the facility with unmatched efficiency.
