Via packaging a commodity item can take on a whole new look
The new product represents an advancement in sugar
packaging, with benefits such as an integral handle with grip
feature providing functionality for the end-user. The new
packaging format is also resealable, refillable and recyclable!
The CSR Pour & Store with its sturdy integrated handle, clear
packaging and convenient size makes reusability a popular
option for a variety of other household needs. The packaging,
which is manufactured from PVC, is recyclable through nearly
all Australian kerbside recycling programs.

Another great example of lifting image via packaging innovation
The new Board Handled Pail range is made completely of carton
board. The sturdiness of the handle over the traditional wire
handle, combined with holes for the chopsticks, eliminates the
need for plastic carry bags if up to two are being purchased.
Fewer substrates are being used in the production of the
paperboard pail – the board is sourced from 100% plantation
forests. The board in the Board Handled Pail is sourced from
100% renewable resources, unlike the wire used in the traditional
wire pail.
The board handle consumes more board than the wire so the size
of the pail was reduced to compensate. The 20oz is an alternative
to the 26oz pail (30% less volume), the 28oz is designed to act as
an alternative to the 32oz pail (14% less volume).

Using packaging to enhance image and address
sustainability
The newly designed packaging is made from compostable film
and is the first food packaging to be promoted in Australia
as ‘home compostable.’ The film is manufactured from
renewable wood pulp, sourced from managed plantations and
is proven to biodegrade in home compost bins.
All Gingerbread Folk cardboard packaging and displays
are sourced from environmentally sustainable managed
forests, without the use of chlorine in the bleaching process,
making it conveniently recyclable in any council recycling
system.

New format reduces wastage by 85%!
In May 2008, Selleys launched Liquid Nails in a new packaging
format – the Liquid Nails 680g ‘gunnable’ sausage which is made
from polyethylene with internal foil. The collapsible nature of
the new Liquid Nails sausage has up to 85% less in volume of
packaging waste compared with cartridges. This reduces waste
disposal costs and contribution to landfill. The entire packaging is
recyclable, including the clips sealing the sausage.Compliments of The Australian Packaging Council

50% less packaging = 62% fewer trucks to transport each year!
Choosing Omo Small & Mighty® is an easy way for consumers
to reduce their impact on the environment. The new 475ml
Small & Mighty® replaces the traditional 1.4L Omo bottle,
using 50% less packaging than the original pack, resulting in
82 tonnes less plastic, 32 tonnes less cardboard in shipping
and 62% fewer trucks to transport the product per annum. The
3 times concentrated formula means you still get the same
number of washes and wash results. Omo Small & Mighty®
does not contain any phosphates and has significantly lower
sodium levels compared with other laundry products, making
it better for grey water usage. The surfactants (or cleaning
agents) are also readily biodegradable according to Australian
Standard AS4351.

Use of cardboard instead of foil bulk improves image and cuts cubic
volume by 30%
Manufactured from 75% recycled content, the Multipack is
lightweight, offers superior product protection and is convenient
to handle and store. Packaging the individual servings in a
cardboard carton instead of a large metallic pillow pack has
reduced the volume of the finished goods by about 30%. The
Multipack also has a high quality print surface, allowing for the
printing of easy to read information for consumers, including
details about the sustainability of the packaging.

A great concept based on biodegradability
Sancell’s EnviroBubble
is the worlds first 100% Low
Density Polyethylene (LDPE)
fully degradable padded
mailing bag with a shelf
life of approx. 18 months.
EnviroBubble is designed to
break down quickly in landfill
and be absorbed back into the
soil with no harmful residues.
Because EnviroBubble uses a
non-starch based degradable
additive it can be recycled as
well as decomposed.

This is just a great concept – a portable water filter!
The Brita “Fill and Go” is a sports
bottle with an activated carbon filter inside,
enabling users to fill from any tap and filter
out unpleasant tastes and odours (while
retaining fluoride). Both bottle and filters
are manufactured in Sydney. The filter
processes up to 57 litres or 80 refills of tap
water. This development is targeted at active
consumers, including children, by offering
a convenient and economical alternative to
bottled water. This will effectively reduce the
amount of water bottles going to landfill, by
encouraging users to reuse and refill with
tap water.

Protection plus femininity
Tin provides rigidity
and protection of product.
Produced from 100% recyclable
steel, the tins are reusable
and can be used for storage
of hairpins, jewellery or other
personal effects. The liners
themselves have a protective
label and wrapper in one, which
eliminates any bulky separate
wrapping material. This has
reduced overall size of the
compact by approx 35%.Compliments of The Australian Packaging Council

We’ve seen it before but think of the cost & weight savings!
Brightlite Wines are packaged in recyclable
aluminium bottles, a first for
the Australian market. There
is a 95% energy saving in
recycling aluminium to that
of producing aluminium from
bauxite. The bottle is 15%
of the weight of an average
empty glass wine bottle and
30% lighter than a full glass
bottle (750ml). The bottles
are totally shatter proof. The
financial return on one tonne
of recycled aluminium is $1800
compared to $285 for glass
and one tonne of recycled
aluminium produces 3,350
bottles, compared to 2,350
glass bottles.

Weight reduction leads to greater pallet utilisation leads
to . . .The 300mL Liquid
Dressing PET Bottle redesign
has over a 13% bottle
weight reduction equating
to approximately 52 Tonne
reduction in PET. The bottle redesign
increased pallet utilisation by 21% providing a
further environmental benefit
of reducing carbon dioxide
emissions. This bottle was
launched in 2007. The re-design
was achieved without loss of
functionality or performance
on a line. The new bottle is also
able to withstand a greater top
to bottom compression enabling
no loss in pallet stack loading.
