Gas-filled cylinders are a source of energy often used in homes for cooking and heat-ing. However, gas compressed in cylinders can also be hazardous. Gas leaks from valves, pipes, connections pose permanent dangers, and such leaks are a source of worry for a person concerned with house-hold safety. Using proper precautions and following safety procedures can make the difference between safety and accidents and between life and death, by the permis-sion of Allaah. This pamphlet includes instructions for using gas cylinders safely in order to avoid accidents resulting from their incorrect usage.1. Place the gas cylinder in a shaded, well-ventilated place, away from direct sunlight.2. Do not put anything flammable or combus-tible, like paint, wood, oil, paper or trash anywhere near the gas cylinder.3. Do not put the gas cylinder inside the kitchen near the stove (oven); the heat of the oven could raise the temperature of the cylinder and may cause expansion of the gas inside; this increases the pressure in the cylinder and leads to gas leakage and possible explosion or combustion that could seriously harm someone.4. Never keep an empty reserve cylinder

inside your home.5. Use metal pipes and connectors instead of rubber, when connecting the gas cylinder to the stove.6. Inspect and ensure the safety of the oven, stove, the metal pipes and connectors every now and then to make certain there are no leaks, cracks, or other damage.7. Be sure to close the cylinder’s valve before leaving home, and especially if you will be away for a long time.If you smell gas leaking at home, do the following:1. Do not light matches, cigarettes, or any other source of heat.2. Do not turn on any electrical switches (such as light switches) and switch off the main electricity breaker of the entire home.3. Evacuate all people from the place and keep them outside the house until the gas dissipates.4. Securely shut the safety valve to the gas.5. Ventilate the place by opening windows and doors. If there is a fire at home and you are unable to control it, do the following:1. Exit the home with all family members following the evacuation route defined in the emergency plan you have already prepared.

2. Call the Civil Defense (fire department) emergency line immediately from your mobile or from one of your neighbors' telephones.3. Do not enter the home to retrieve money, documents, domestic pets or anything else – this could be the last time you return. An Important Note:It is imperative for the head of the household to know the emergency numbers, especially the Civil Defense (fire department) number, teach them to his wife and children, and note them near the telephone in order to make memorizing them easier. Why must all gas valves, connections and pipes be made of stainless steel, brass or copper? This is because rubber and other soft substances are prone to breakage and damage, as it is something that can be torn and easily cut and cracked, making it possi-ble for gas to leak from its weak spots. As for aluminum, despite being a metal, it is not suitable to use with petroleum gases, since it breaks easily leading to leaks.Any leak from the gas cylinder’s connec-tions could quickly fill the house with flam-mable gas, which needs nothing more than a single spark to ignite. This spark could
