Miniature art is a specialty art, not a novelty art. Through the ages it has been considered an art form. Min-iature art is most often ex-tremely detailed work, ex-quisite in color with a strength of composition which can more than com-pete with larger paintings.

SUMMER NOTES; from Bonnie Eldredge

Hello!! Summer Artists!! We’ve been so lucky to have mostly comfortable weather for the plein air groups that Jacquie has arranged, and I believe she is planning them into the fall. Come and join the groups! MINI’s for Gainan’s Show Hope you are all engaged in painting a few mini’s to donate for the support of the Images Art Grants. The FALL FES-TIVAL show at Gainan’s is sure to be a success as the committee has nearly all the details put together well ahead of time. Be sure to bring your own easels and let Kathy or Jacquie know that you are willing to paint/attend the show.

Exhibits

We are still looking for options for our May show UNLESS CTA decides to rejoin the ArtWalks again. Let Bonnie know your ideas. Some places have been approached on Montana and haven’t been able to house our exhibit. Tippet Rise Art Center Mary Knapp and Bonnie were called to meet with two young men from Denver who are here to promote and intro-duce the Tippet Rise development taking place just out of Fishtail Montana. It is to be a center of artistic perfor-mance and education. The plans are on the drawing board and are being determined by the heads of the Tippet Rise foundation, Kathy (the artist) and Peter Halstead (the musician). There are to be several art centered constructions on the large land site purchased containing 11 smaller ranches including some of Isabel Johnson’s place. The website: http://tippetrise.org/home Check it out!! It will be a huge boon to the performance arts and educational opportunities in our area. We are fortunate to have this interest so close to Billings, eastern Montana. Website Have you visited our website lately? www.billingsartsassociation.org Please go there and make any suggestions or ideas you have known to Bonnie or Eva or Jacquie. We need to make the website an active part of our organization and each artist in BAA. BAA is also on FACEBOOK!! Drop by and leave us a message. Jo Firm does the active job maintaining that site for BAA. Won’t be long now…..keep painting EVERY DAY! Love, Bonnie

861-2653, if you plan to attend as she will send out a map & we will plan/share meals if you are staying overnight. [email protected]

NEWS FLASH

Natural Bridge as seen in low water. The dry creek bed is obvious above the falls. The river has completely gone un-derground upstream of here and works its way through the porous sandstone to where it shoots out to become a sur-face river again. In high water the entire creek is pouring over the edge as well as through the underground channels. Prior to its collapse in 1988 the creek was spanned by a natural bridge that gave the park its name.

Jacquie will send out emails with additional plein air dates and locations. If you have a loca-tion you'd like to share with us please let Jacquie know, [email protected]

Plein-Air at Logan Ranch 7-12-13 Artists favorite Plein-air location is the historical Logan Ranch: Born in Helena on May 18, 1889, Dick Logan was a rancher and landowner in Billings area. Son of AC Logan. Member of the Logan children's orchestra. Manager of the Billings Airport for over 30 years. Married to Marjorie Ethel Powell in 1915. They had four daughters. He died March 14, 1957, at age 67. Billings Airport was renamed after Logan to Logan Field in 1957. In 1971 the airport was renamed to Billings Lo-gan International Airport . (Billings Public Library Historic Collection– Montana)

Sue returns to Logan Ranch with her original oil painted 10 years ago on this spot during a BAA plein-air visit - she captured the Rim Rocks as they slope to Alkali Creek, a bit of history on canvas.

Today Sue opens her paint box and the sites of Lo-gan Ranch will once again appear on canvas.

Plein-Air at Riverfront Park 7-19-13

Riverfront Park is Billings’ largest river park. On South Billings Boulevard, it has developed lawn areas, natural trails, picnic facilities, and the very popular Lake Josephine and Cochran Pond. Yellowstone River Parks Association has worked extensively on the gravel trails and continues to pioneer the Dutcher Trail route through the park. If you haven’t visited the YRPA’s web site: yrpa.org/archives/history/ and read through the sight, do so today, be sure to check out Bernadine Fox’s legacy “Four Seasons”; read the history and then we all can say “thank you” to those individuals with foresight to create the YRPA; we enjoyed the beautiful day, the beautiful park and the public green space, our paintings take on a new meaning.

ArtShop June 2013, Artists show and discuss their work

About ArtShop: In the interest of getting to know our membership, ArtShop was created; a coffee break for artists coming together for a couple of hours each month to talk shop. Bringing creative endeavors for “show and tell” dis-cuss and maybe even ask for critique. Sharing the latest meanderings of the art world by bringing Articles of inter-est. Sometimes even a glimpse into artistic references in cyber space. Since organizing in March, 2012, we have made new friends, shared our works and just enjoyed “ArtShop”.

If you haven’t yet experienced ‘ArtShop” join in, no reservations necessary.

Ron ..displays his Intarsia woodworking; the wood used as the primary color is called purple heart ( it’s from either Africa or S. America), pine, Philippine mahogany, poplar and aspen. He estimated about 40 hours total time to make this mosaic-like picture: start to finish. “Wine Bottle & Glass” A bit about Intarsia: Intarsia is a woodworking tech-nique that uses varied shapes, sizes, and species of wood fitted to-gether to create a mosaic-like picture with an illusion of depth. Intar-sia is created through the selection of different types of wood, using their natural grain pattern and color (but can involve the use of stains and dyes) to create variations in the pattern. After selecting the spe-cific woods to be used within the pattern, each piece is then individ-ually cut, shaped, and finished. Sometimes areas of the pattern are raised to create more depth. Once the individual pieces are complete, they are fitted together like a jig-saw puzzle and glued to wood back-ing which is sometimes cut to the outline shape of the image.

IMAGES from the PAST ... A new feature: Stories preserved in the Billings Arts Association Archives

Researched by Ev Bergeron & Jeanette Magstadt

A few notes from an article published in The Billings Gazette September 21, 1960

“Wide Variety of the Arts Has Thrived Since Billings Founded”

By Iris O. Malmin

“……the modern world is ruled by science, but given its shape and color by art, its most pleasing sounds and meaning by music and poetry, its categories characters and catch words by philosophy, fiction and history”…Jacques Barzun.

Billings has never been a cultural cactus patch. It has been unique among western frontier towns be-cause since its beginning Billings has made consistent efforts to bring exhibits and the performing arts of dra-ma and music to this area.

The Billings Studio Theater provides top-rate winter footlight entertainment to sell-out audiences, while during the summer a playhouse workshop with an enviable reputation draws actors from all over the coun-ty.

The Billings Symphony and Community Con-cert Association plays to capacity audiences year after year.

The Yellowstone Historical Society has devel-oped a remarkable museum of western lore, preserving our heritage for future generations. The Billings Cam-era Club focuses on improving techniques and preserv-ing the current scene for posterity. Private and adult educational art and craft classes are filled to capacity. The Montana Institute of the Arts was founded in 1948 to “…..preserve the heritage of the state as found in its history and folklore; to stimulate creative work in the several arts, and to make these cultural re-sources available for the benefit and enjoyment of the people of Montana”. MIA started an art collection for Montana in 1959, and has 12 items as nucleus of a collection to be shown permanently in the Montana Historical Museum in Helena. The Institute is unique both in goals and princi-ples. There is no other state organization where artists, historians, writers, weavers, photographers and crafts-men have banded together to further mutual interests.

Arts Group Formed

The Billings Arts Association formed in the fall of 1954 by state members as a branch of the MIA, is open to anyone. It has grown from eight members to nearly 100. Eugene Carroll has been fol-lowed as president by Mrs. Ben Forbes, Malcolm Lewis, Irene McPherson, Bill Sage, Robert Fehlberg and Isabelle Johnson. The association sponsors the Foreign Film Festi-val to bring to Billings outstanding films from Sweden, Germany, Austria, Italy, England and Japan such as ‘Aida” “Genevieve,” “Green Magic,” “Romeo and Juli-et,” “Othello,” and “Animal Farm.” These films vastly different from usual American film and television fare, afford a glimpse into foreign cultures. Proceeds since 1955 have gone into a building fund for a local art center. An annual Christmas art exhibit sale and recep-tion, held since 1956 in the EMC Union building draws large crowds to view oil and watercolor paintings, sculp-ture, mosaics, carving and ceramics produced by associa-tion members. “Bits of Sage,” a collection of prose and poetry by members of the writers’ group, has sold 2,000 copies since 1957 and a fourth edition will be published this fall. …….The Billings Arts Association after six years is active and growing, and it looks forward to widening horizons in all fields…………………..

Above article stated that the BAA was originated by eight (8) members. We found notes listing nine (9) members, assume (maybe) the founding 8 plus 1 new member, in any case the names are as follows: Gene Carroll, (President), Agnes Corrigan, Chuck Harring-ton, Donna Forbes, Esther Gray, Antoinette Fraser (Secretary), Malcom (Mac) Lewis, Mrs. Albert Schunk, & Mrs. Henry Lohof.

Unbelievable published comment: …….our oldest member (mentioned her name) is 72.

More in next issue. If anyone has a ques-tion about BAA past, maybe the detectives can find the answer. Ev @ 208-0411
