From the Rabbi Dear Friends, In the last issue of KTItems, I began answering your questions. Here is a special High Holiday edition. I hope you find the answers informative, and please keep your questions coming. I find that no matter how “early” or “late” the holidays are, I never seem to be prepared. Is there a way to get into the High Holiday spirit before Rosh Hashanah? Spiritual preparation for the High Holidays traditionally begins one month in advance with the beginning of the month of Elul. During Elul, the shofar is blown during weekday morning services. Hearing the shofar reminds us to wake up our souls. It is during this month that we are to begin the process of teshuvah: soul searching and asking for forgiveness from family, friends, and acquaintances. Beginning with this month, we also add Psalm 27 to morning and evening services; this psalm has come to be known as the “Psalm for the Season of Repentance.” During Elul, it is meaningful to give ourselves the gift of a little extra time – a deep breath, a moment to reflect on the gifts for which we are grateful. One way to do this is to sign up for “Jewels of Elul.” Each day you will receive a short reading or thought written by various people (including rabbis, cantors, political figures, and rock stars) to help you think about High Holiday themes. Signing up is free at www.jewelsofelul.com What is Selichot? “Selichot refers to two related types of penitential prayers. The first are the prayers that are customarily recited daily at early morning services during the month of Elul. This is also the name of the service that takes place late at night on the Saturday preceding Rosh Hashanah and consists of a longer series of these penitential prayers,” (myjewishlearning.com). Attending the Selichot service is another meaningful way to prepare for Rosh HaShanah and Yom Kippur. This year, KTI will host Community Synagogue of Rye, Jewish Community Center of Harrison, Congregation Emanu-El of Westchester, and Chavurat Tikvah. The evening will begin on September 24

th at 8:30, as we join together for Havdalah, Jewish

learning, and the Selichot service itself. I haven’t been to services since last Yom Kippur. Is it hypocritical for me to show up for only the High Holidays? No. What matters is that you find a meaningful way to connect to Jewish tradition or heritage or community or God or your inner-most self. The High Holidays provide us with the opportunity to ask ourselves difficult questions – am I living life to its fullest? Do I express gratitude often enough? Are there things in my life I would like to change and how do I begin to change them? The High Holidays are also a time to reconnect with community and with the Jewish tradition. Please know that no one at services is taking attendance. I hope that your High Holidays are meaningful, and I also hope to be able to celebrate with you on Sukkot, and again on Shemini Atzeret and Simchat Torah – the Fall holidays just keep coming! As the High Holidays approach and I begin to prepare myself for long days of chanting prayers from the Bimah before the greatest crowd we get in synagogue all year, I wonder, what is the preparation process like for you? What is it like to sit in the congregation, listening to prayer after prayer? You may relate to all, some, or even none of what we chant. You may come to be with your family or your community. Perhaps you come just because it‟s what you think you are supposed to do. In Judaism prayer is both an institution as well as an individual form of expression. But in the context of the larger synagogue community, how does one join these together? In today‟s world, the habit of individual prayer is not recognized as common. But is this true? How often do your thoughts and yearnings turn toward something greater? What would happen if you just let them? Could you reach God? I believe that today, more than ever, most of us need the stimulus of an inspiring atmosphere to pray, and we depend upon our synagogue community to bring us to the state of mind that makes us receptive to prayer. As you sit among your community and pray together with me this year, take a moment to mull over your Machzor. Read some of the translations. Think about the religious values of Judaism, and let your mind wander away from the chanting that can sometimes be overwhelming. As we learn from Pirkei Avot, Chapter 2:18, “Do not make your prayer a fixed thing.” Everyone is encouraged to put his or her own meaning into the texts and to move beyond the prescribed words to formulate personal prayers as well. I hope that you will use your time in synagogue this year to really do just this-bring yourself into a devotional frame of mind and pray in any way you know how.

President’s Message Has it really been a year since the High Holidays? As I get older, I find that time seems to be accelerating. When I was (MUCH) younger, a year seemed to take far more than twelve months as I awaited my next birthday or another occasion on which I received presents from my parents. Nowadays, a year seems to barely take six months. I am sure this phenomenon has something to do either with Einstein‟s theory of relativity (which I never understood) or the fact that I am getting older. As I prefer not think about the latter, I will blame Albert E. for now. We are constantly redefining the parameters of our age. When we were children, we defined our age in quarter years. How old are you? I am 5 ½ , 7 ¾, etc. At some point, however, we start measuring our age in full years. How old are you? I am 17, 22, etc. Then later in life we begin dividing our decades in thirds. How old are you? I am in early 30‟s, my mid 40‟s, etc. Still later in life, when this methodology no longer works, we age in decades. How old are you? I am in my 60‟s, 70‟s, etc. Finally, as we begin to see the light at the end of the tunnel, we revert back to an earlier stage and proudly announce our age in no uncertain terms. How old are you? Why I am 88, 93, etc. This year, KTI is celebrating its 125

th birthday. I guess for institutions, we celebrate birthdays every 5 years. Remember

KTI @120? So what do you get for the synagogue that is celebrating the quasquicentennial (yes, that‟s the word) anniversary of its founding? It just so happens, I have a suggestion. As with almost all religious institutions these days, KTI needs money. While giving money might be considered crass if for an individual‟s birthday (although I assure you that I have never considered it so), it most certainly will be greatly appreciated by KTI. Our needs are twofold: (1) we need money to support our day-to-day operations (e.g. salaries and utility bills) and (2) we need money for special projects (e.g. a new sound system and renovating the downstairs lounge and bathrooms). Both are intertwined. What‟s the point of having a new this or a renovated that if we cannot pay our bills? Similarly, if we are to attract new members to increase our revenue, KTI must look and sound its best. So I am here to ask you to please be as generous as possible when you make your donations to KTI. If this sounds like a prelude to the Yom Kippur appeal, it is. I do not believe it is ever too early to ask for money on behalf of OUR synagogue. In closing, I ask you to consider whether you have done all you can do to assure the perpetuation of our religion and culture. KTI and all the synagogues in this country act as guarantors that Judaism will remain alive and well in the United States and that America will never abandon the State of Israel. If we fail our synagogues, we run the risk of witnessing the gradual decay of Judaism in this country. And thus, we will have failed our children and our grandchildren. More than ever we should exalt in the glory of OUR synagogue and pledge its eternal survival. Can we really afford to do any less? My Co-President, Sam Barkin, and I wish all of you a very happy and healthy New Year. May the Year 5772 be one of peace for all of you, for our Jewish community, for Israel and for the entire world. activities and religious functions provided by the synagogue.

We are looking for people who have a little time or a lot of time to help plan, organize and run activities. Our first and main fundraising event is The Celebration of 125 Years, a dinner dance on January 14, 2012. We need volunteers to

help plan this event which will be held at a catering facility in New Rochelle.

Birthright Israel It was the summer of 1977, and probably the most valuable gift ever given to me; eight weeks in Israel. My parents committed to sending me to Israel after my High School Graduation and did the same for my other two brothers. I feel that they certainly knew what they were doing. For them it was an expense, but an excellent investment! Now parents have the opportunity to send their children for free through Taglit Birthright. It is a 10 day free trip for young adults, ages 18 – 25. All Jews should visit the Land of Milk and Honey and experience our Homeland first hand. Please make it a priority to send your children to Israel because they will have the best 10 days of their lives. Barry Albalah (Age 52)

Being a part of the Yael Adventures Taglit-Birthright

experience in January 2010 was hands down the most amazing experience of my life! I will never forget this trip - from the tour guide to the activities I participated in, the people I met, and the fun I had

My Birthright trip allowed me to experience a new

culture with people who were also experiencing this amazing country for the first time. I could not believe how many different cultures and dynamics are packed into this tiny little country. We traveled from the north to the south of the country and each stop had something that was of interest to the group.

It is difficult to pin-point all of my favorite spots, but

there were a few that I remember best. The first would have to be the old city of Jerusalem. This city is so filled with history and religion; it was overwhelming to see it all. I also really enjoyed walking to the Western Wall on Shabbat. I feel like that let me be in touch with my religious side. Another favorite of the trip was actually two days. The first day was the trip to the Bedouin tents. We slept outside and had a really great time riding camels and donkeys. The following morning we woke up very early to climb Masada and watch the sunrise, taking in the breath-taking views. Finally we ended the day with a float in the Dead Sea. I loved these two days because of the diverse activities.

For five of the ten days, my group had eight Israeli

Soldiers join us, all of whom were about the same age as we were. Spending time with Israeli soldiers provided me with a more intimate view of Israel than just visiting alone. Overall, I loved my trip to Israel because it was a well balanced blend of history, religion, outdoors activities, and sightseeing. I cannot wait to go back with my family some day!

CEMETERY MEMORIAL SERVICE

This brief and beautiful service is a most

dignified way of remembering and honoring

all of our loved ones, wherever they may be laid to rest.

Many of our newer congregants are not aware that one of the benefits of membership at KTI is a burial plot “in line” in our cemetery. The cemetery was founded in 1903 and is located in Glenville, Connecticut only several miles from the Synagogue. It is a beautifully maintained bucolic space located on a hilltop at the head of Memory Lane bordered by woodlands. The cemetery is a unique part of KTI and an asset that is not commonly found in many synagogues. It holds the history of our presence in the Port Chester/Rye area from our inception to the modern day, and provides a source of comfort and continuity as a people for the many families who are represented there. Recently, we received approval from the Town of Greenwich to develop the last remaining usable three acres and will be adding 3,000 graves to our existing space in the next several years. Prior to opening that space, we will be offering graves in the existing burial section at a special pricing for members only. Pre-purchase of family plots has been a popular way of providing for loved ones in the future and alleviating the added pressure of having to deal with such matters at a time of tsouris and mourning for a family member. Members may reserve two or more graves for future use. Contact the office for information on available plots and pricing.

Perspective 5772 A few days ago I had a splinter. Not your average splinter. This splinter dug deep and once it was embedded in my finger, it held on with all its will. It was very painful and my immediate thought was that I must get it out! I spent about thirty minutes attempting to remove it, finally succeeding after a long battle, the metal tweezers winning over the sliver of wood. For those thirty minutes I was fixated on the splinter and my finger. Nothing else mattered. My finger, my pain, the splinter, the tweezers were my world. It was only after getting rid of the splinter did I realize that in those thirty minutes it had begun to rain outside. Not just a light summer rain, but large black clouds, with heavy downpours. How the weather changed in that short amount of time. All my focus was on the splinter and the weather condition changed without me realizing it. So how could something so small, so tiny as a splinter, become the center of my world? So much that I was not able to take note of the weather change that occurred right outside my window? Well, I guess the pain had a lot to do with it! The incident made me stop and think. There are so many times in our lives when we are so focused on the little things in life that they become our world, nothing else matters. In the meantime the rest of the world changes around us and we are unaware of it. How many times do we become so consumed with the small things that other things that really need our attention go unattended? How many times do we make small things the "biggest issue"? How many times? At this time of year, during the Hebrew month of Elul, leading up to the Holy Days of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur it is important to take note and look inward in order to feel comfortable to look outward. Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur are reminders for ourselves to take note that no matter how "big" our "big thing" is, in reality we, as human beings are so small in the greater scheme of the Universe. It is amazing that we can be so small and yet our "things" so big! It is all perspective. So this year try to practice perspective. Don't let your "small things" outweigh the bigger things in life that need your attention. Of course, if you have a splinter take time to remove it, but don't forget about your family, your community, your world that needs your attention too. It is an amazing wonder that our lives can be so important and so insignificant at the same time. It is a balancing act that we must practice in order to be humble, and in awe and appreciate our lives. Welcome back to the KTI Early Childhood program! We are so excited for school to begin on September 12

th. We welcome our many new students

and their families, and know they will feel part of the big KTI family quickly. We are happy that all of our terrific teachers are returning and we welcome a wonderful new 3‟s teacher, Paula Mechanic. She is a seasoned professional who brings a strong background in arts and language as well as a passion for animals and nature. We are so pleased to have her join the ECP.

September will be a busy month as the children

will be meeting new friends, adjusting to school and experiencing lots of new things. Their days will be filled with fun activities and stories about Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. They will taste apples and honey and hear the Shofar sound. The children will also place the plants from our summer garden inside the new greenhouse that is being built in honor of Eileen Stein‟s retirement. Now, they will garden all year long!

Weekly Shabbat with the Early Childhood

program also begins in September. All the children and teachers will gather with the Rabbi and Cantor to light the candles, learn the prayers, sing songs and eat yummy challah. It is a warm and special time that we all enjoy.

By October, school is in full swing. Autumn will

have arrived and the children will be feeling the cool breeze and experiencing all the fun the new season brings: changing leaves, pine cones, falling acorns, apple tastings, birds that migrate. The festive holiday of Sukkot will also be celebrated in October. The children will create decorations for a synagogue Sukkah and join the Rabbi in it to sing songs, smell the etrog and shake the lulav. We also hope ECP parents will join us on Sunday, November 6

WJCS Breast Cancer Navigator WJCS is urging women newly diagnosed to contact its Breast Caner Navigator Program, which provides mentors for help and support through breast cancer diagnosis and treatment. Each mentor is a breast cancer survivor, who can offer the type of support and understanding that only someone who has been down that road can provide. CANTOR’S DISCRETIONARY FUND-Funds dispensed by Cantor for musical programs and activities. KIDDUSH FUND - $118 donation to co-sponsor kiddush and $360 to be a sole sponsor. Funds are allocated to subsidize Saturday morning kiddushim and collations on Friday night and holidays. PRAYER BOOK FUND - $36 donation used to replenish supply of weekday, sabbath and holiday prayer books. YAHRZEIT & MINYAN FUNDS - Donations are used to purchase or replace religious items - torah covers, kippot, lace coverings, taleisim, havdalah sets - and for maintenance of Memorial Boards. RELIGIOUS SCHOOL FUND - Funds subsidize enrichment programs and materials for the Religious School. EARLY CHILDHOOD FUND - Funds are used for books, toys and special programs for the nursery program. TREE OF LIFE - $180 per leaf for the Tree of Life in the vestibule of the main building to commemorate special occasions. MEMORIAL PLAQUES - $360 for a brass plaque hung in the Daily Prayer Room in memory of a departed loved one. It is lit each year during the week of the Yahrzeit observance and Yizkor holidays. PERMANENT SEATS - $1,500 per seat. A brass nameplate reserves seat(s) for family members during High Holiday Services. LIBRARY FUND - Books will be purchased for our new library in the Gantz Building Multi-purpose room. HESED FUND - Donations are used to fulfill acts of loving kindness, bringing comfort to those in the community who are in need.

KTI to Participate in

Its Annual High Holiday

Food Drive!

This year our congregation will once again sponsor a food drive for the High Holidays. In our 13th year, we ask you to open your hearts (and pantries) and give generously. On Rosh Hashanah, we will hand out grocery bags, and on Kol Nidre Eve, we ask you to bring them back to the synagogue filled with food. The food will then be donated to the Interfaith Soup Kitchen at St. Peter‟s Church in Port Chester and we will have started to fulfill the commandment in Deuteronomy 15:11 which says: “Because the land will always have those who are in need, which is why I command you: open your hand to the poor and needy kinsman in the land.” We will also be acting in harmony with the themes of the haftarah on Yom Kippur, which urges us to depart from our selfish ways, and think of the poor, the hungry and the downtrodden on our fast day. Please - fill the bags with tuna fish, soups, vegetables, beans, fruit cocktail, canned potatoes, peanut butter, spaghetti sauce, mustard, mayonnaise, ketchup, salad dressing, noodles, jello mix, coffee, iced tea mix - and bring them back on Kol Nidre Eve. Let‟s all participate in this mitzvah - and make it an even more meaningful Yom Kippur!

WJCS Offers Support to Chronically Ill

WJCS Pathways to Care is starting a support group for people living with serious chronic illness such as Parkinson's Disease, COPD, end-stage renal disease, advanced heart disease, cancer or Multiple Sclerosis. Since t ime immemorial, blessing the lulav (palm branch) and etrog (citron) has been the Jewish way of thanking God for the blessings of the earth on the holiday of Sukkot. By pointing the four species together in six directions, we remind ourselves that God‟s presence can be found in every area of our lives. The lulav and etrog provide us with wonderful opportunities for family involvement. Kids (and adults!) love the sight, the smell, the touch of the lulav and etrog, and of the flax in which we wrap the etrog. Everyone can be involved in putting together the different parts of the lulav. The blessings can be made by the family together, not only in shul on Yom Tov but also during Hol Hamoed (the intermediate days of Sukkot) at home, every day! And kids love to carry the lulav and etrog to and from synagogue and in shul during the Hoshanot procession. Sukkot is a very tactile, dramatic holiday, and the high point occurs in shul, when a roomful of

people carrying lulavim and etrogim form a procession for Hoshanot. This is one of those mitzvot (command-ments) that is best done by a large crowd. You really feel a sense of the holiday when the whole community comes together, lulav and etrog in hand, circling the synagogue. And celebrating Sukkot with the mitzvah of lulav and etrog is a powerful answer to Jewish apathy. Reading frightening statistics about assimilation and intermarriage, many Jews throw up their hands and say “what can we do?” With the lulav and etrog we have a tool in our hands to fight back against Jewish apathy. With one act, one mitzvah, the Jewish community can make a powerful group statement about our will to renew ourselves spiritually. Let‟s do it together! Let large numbers of us purchase a lulav and etrog, make the blessings and bring them to shul for Hoshanot! We will make it easy for you! The Synagogue will order the lulavim and etrogim for a price of $45 per set. Orders must be

submitted to the KTI Office by Monday, October 3. We will make sure you receive your lulav and etrog by Tuesday, October 11. On Thursday, we will find a Synagogue full of people bearing lulavim and etrogim - and our Synagogue will be transformed into a wonderful sea of green and yellow! Join us in this mitzvah!
