Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! I
hope everyone is ready for the upcoming
holidays. I know I am. I just wanted to
remind everyone of a few of the upcoming
events for January. First, the Pistol Ultra
Marathon is December 31- January 1. The
Foothill Striders will be manning the Main
Aid Station again this year. Whether you are
running or not, please mark your calendars
to volunteer! If you are aiming for the 1,200
mile running club, this will be your last
chance to get your volunteer credit for your
1,200 mile medal. You will receive credit
for 2016 volunteering whether you volunteer
on December 31 or January 1, however, you
need to make sure you are volunteering for
the MAIN AID STATION to receive your
volunteer credit.
Second, January is our awards meeting and
is always our most attended meeting of the
year. We have some important changes to
inform everyone of for the upcoming year,
so I hope everyone can find time to come.
Happy New Year!
Tracy Nuchols
Jason Jones & Family Don Turner
Officer nominations and
next year’s proposed budget
(please find elsewhere in the
newsletter) will also be voted
on at our January meeting.

With short days and cold temperatures our outside cycling has been reduced and perhaps
you've increased indoor training. Winter is a great time to cross train the body, BUT, it's
also the ideal time to get some TLC for your bike. Winter can be a slow time at bike
shops so they typically offer special pricing on bike tune-ups. Check your favorite bike
shops for wintertime offers. If you haven't had your bike tuned up in more than a year -
it's time!
Also, Tim Patterson, a member of the Striders, has opened The Bicycle School in Maryville.
Check-out HIS website http://www.thebicycleschool.com/ for excellent, in-depth classes
on bike maintenance, bike repair, bike fitting, and YES, even bike-building.

January 7 Cerulean Knob (Rich Mountain Loop), a moderately strenuous hike of 8.5 miles. We‘ll carpool to Cades Cove parking lot and start from there. More information is available at the Foothill Striders Hikers Facebook page. Meet at Browns Creek Shopping Center in front of Food Lion and leave at 8AM. Hike Leader: John Barrow.
Martin Luther King Jr Day, January 16 Little River, Cucumber Gap, a short easy hike of about 5 miles, mostly level. Meet at Browns Creek Shopping Center in front of Food Lion and leave at 8AM and drive to Elkmont. Hike Leader: Steve Larrabee.
On December 17, Steve Larrabee & Andy Piercy hiked Gregory Ridge
to Gregory Bald Trail to Doe Knob on the Appalachian Trail. It was
forecast as the warmest day of the week. When they left Maryville, it
was 36° and at the trailhead it was 52°. No rain for the first hour, then
it began to drizzle. The hardest part of the hike was the section from the
top of Gregory Ridge over to the AT. It was near 40° with a 25 mph
crosswind over the ridge and steady drizzle. Perfect conditions for
hypothermia which they managed to avoid thank goodness.

Dear Reindeer Run Volunteers,
Thank you all for your support at
this year’s Reindeer Run on a wet
and cold December 4! There was a break in the rain
during most of the race, so we were very grateful!
Members of the Foothill Striders and area community
volunteers have been great to assist Parks & Rec. in
providing a safe and efficient event for participants,
and I can’t thank you enough! There is a great need
for volunteers at every race, and I appreciate those
who still came out in the bad weather. We look
forward to our 19th year in the Healthy Blount Triple
Crown of Running. Our first race in 2017 is the
Spring Sprint scheduled for April 8th. Please mark
your calendars! Thank you again!
