1. The German Philosopher, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832) wrote: "Treat a man as he appears to be, and you make him worse. But treat a man as if he were what he potentially could be, and you make him what he should be... "How often have you heard or heard of people being "put down" for "not doing their job" or "not being dedicated to their job" without there being any understanding of whether or not the person has been properly trained to do what they've been asked to do; or, without any understanding of the pressures they are trying to cope with either in the workplace or in other parts of their life?We seem to lack understanding that productivity increases as the wellness of people increases - the reverse also is true. In our organisations we often do not help our people to develop a broader PERSPECTIVE. We do not adequately couple that with patient RESPECT for them as individuals. And then further, we don't ensure that they understand the function they are performing in terms of SERVICE to the ultimate customer (whoever that is in the private sector or government); making certain that the "service chain" back to them is clearly mapped for all parts of the organisation. Are you a leader who tries on every possible occasion to help people "rise up" to the challenges of what the organisation wants them to do? Do you as an individual help others on a daily basis to rise up and be what they potentially could be? Are you determined to raise yourself up regardless of the circumstances in which you find yourself? In helping others to rise, it's amazing what you will learn along the way to help you to rise also!

Creativetypes!2.

I've seen so many people shudder when the idea of being creative is raised. Most of these same people let their imaginations run wild in their childhood as they imagined themselves as knights, princesses, dragon-slayers, firemen, nurses, doctors, policemen or policewomen; as well as a myriad of other occupations that took their fancy in their youthfulness. Our society and its various institutions have forced imagination out of many. Where did you put that youthful dream? Are you waiting for some magical or even ordinary event to occur before you do something about it "someday", which is not a known day of any week in this universe? We'll start it after our next monthly golf game is over! When Wednesday is over, we'll...Albert Einstein (1879-1955) wrote: “Imagination is more important than knowledge. For knowledge is limited to all we now know and understand, while imagination embraces the entire world, and all there ever will be to know and understand.” Make a note of your imaginative ideas when they occur; and then, follow them up to ensure you put them into action. If you believe it is right and will not do harm to any other person, animal or thing: then do it... and start doing it NOW!

Meaning is inthe person...3.

Are you easily offended when someone writes or says something to you that they couldn't possibly mean? Now, I've said before, that what is said cannot be unsaid! That remains true! But how you understand it could be an entirely different matter.A few days ago I got a text message from a friend of mine overseas. Within the message she wrote "... hope you're sick." A short time later, she sent a further text that said: "Sorry I meant hope you're not sick. Sorry mistype morning."I could feel her discomfort and embarrassment. I wrote back to her and said: "No problem... I re-interpreted it as to what you meant to say. Meaning is in the person & not in the words! You are a lovely person & MEAN only lovely things & good wishes. Never fear that I will misinterpret your words."Do you realise how often we leave out that word "not" when we mean to say the opposite of what we're written. Perhaps we should learn to give more people the benefit of the doubt?

4.How often have you heard this profession of people knowledge? Often, it's delusional!I had the huge privilege years ago of working as the Executive Manager (Mr Fixit - in other words) to a CEO. There were about 2,500 people in the organisation. It was quite a dispersed organisation spread over about a 120 square miles area. Yet, that CEO knew just about every name of every person in that organisation, the name of the person's husband/wife/partner; and, often the names of their children. I truly envied has capacity to remember all that he remembered about the people in that organisation. He was a walking lesson to behold in what he knew about his "team", what they did and their capacity to "do things"; as well as, all these other pieces of information. How well do you really know your team: whether you are a member or a leader of that team?

Your legacy... 5. When NASA's InSight lander finally launches to Mars (originally scheduled in March 2016) aboard a United Launch Alliance Atlas 5 rocket from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California; my name (Boarding Pass Number J2M2317001924826) will be travelling the 298 million miles (479 million kilometres) with it to Elysium Planitia (the "Plain of Ideal Happiness") on Mars.If your life story was written & sent into space for other intelligences or future earthlings to read: what would it say? What difference have you made on this planet? What non-physical legacy are you leaving to future generations?

I know myteam members...very well!

The ploys of managementthat are not leadership6.

Have you heard of the Peter Principle? It's a concept in management theory formulated by Laurence J. Peter in which he suggests the selection of a candidate for a position is based on the candidate's performance in their current role, rather than on abilities relevant to the intended role. Thus, employees only stop being promoted once they can no longer perform effectively, and "managers rise to the level of their incompetence." The generalized version suggests that anything that works will be used in progressively more challenging applications until it fails. When you employ someone: are you employing "what they've done" or their "ability to do"? Choose their attitude "to doing"! Because too many people are still being promoted to their highest level of incompetence!

Demythologize: Rules will protect you!7.Regrettably, many people as they become chronologically challenged never revisit or revise their favourite role models from their youth. Many cling to them almost as a badge of honour that gives them their identity. I've certainly revised my role models to include many members of younger generations, including Malala Yousafzai, Emma Watson, Jessica Watson, Sam Cawthorn and others. But, I still hold firmly to a role model from my youth: a war ace from the Battle of Britain, Group Captain Sir Douglas Robert Steuart Bader, CBE, DSO & Bar, DFC & Bar, FRAeS (1910-1982). One of his statements took hold of me in my youth that I've repeated often since: "Rules are for the guidance of wise men and the obedience of fools."Does that mean that I despise "rules" in all setting? No it doesn't! Rules, regulations, standards and a lot of other things are man-made. Hence, they can be ignored, misinterpreted or simply not be known. I have a greater liking for another word starting with "R". I much prefer to look for the reason behind the rule; and, then implement appropriate action to give effect to "the reason."I ask students what they do when they are at a pedestrian crossing and the "little man" turns green for them to be able to cross the road. Most tell me they would "walk". I tell them they have a high-risk death-wish strategy. Some look at me in puzzlement, while others simply laugh.I know of three late teenage-years young men who have been either killed or seriously injured at pedestrian crossings in the last five years. They crossed on the green "walk" sign; but didn't check first that there was no driver trying to "run" the red light in the cross-over position. What's you risk-profile and risk-appetite? Do you look simply at "the rules" or do you consider the "reasons" behind the rule and the possibility that others might ignore those rules?
