Due to popular interest, VCS is planning another trip overseas for next summer (2010) to Italy. This trip of 13 nights on the ground will follow this general design: Rome, Pompei, Capri, Sorrento, Siena, Florence, Assisi, Parma, Mantua, Verona, Padua, and Venice. Our agency in Luxembourg is already working out the details.

The dates for this trip have not been firmly established yet, but it is projected in July (after the 4th).The pricing for this trip will include all breakfasts, most dinners (we leave a couple nights open for trying out local restaurants on your own), all hotels, a private motor coach with driver and tour manager, all entrance fees, roundtrip airfare from our international airport (usually Atlanta), and all local taxes. The only extra expense will be your domestic roundtrip flights to and from our departure airport and your lunches (we will be out sightseeing!). This trip is open to anyone from anywhere in the United States.

Point of Contact:Mr. Jim Powers, the VCS Artistic Director, organizes and leads each trip. If you are interested in traveling with us, please contact Mr. Powers via email at [email protected] or telephone (252) 243-6404.

A Message From the Managing DirectorDear VCS friends and family, Welcome to our 91st concert season! What a wild ride we’ve taken since we could all gather to sing and present our concerts for you. Our Christmas Concert of 2019 was our last public appearance. It’s been hard on us all, but as singers who find such joy in sharing music, being shut down was devastating.

But where there’s a will, there’s a way! Through the marvels of modern technology and the expertise and ingenuity of Bryson Mortensen and Diane Drury who worked tirelessly with our Corporate Board and Chorus Council, we were able to keep the music going. Zoom rehearsals, virtual productions, drive-in singing… what this chorus has done for the love of making music together has been inspiring.

And although we must continue to take every precaution, we’re finally able to sing for you!

Our first live concert in over 18 months is going to be a fun one – “Things That Go BUMP in the Night!” We will be dressed for the occasion, setting the mood for songs that remind you of that dark and stormy night when ghoulies and ghosties roam.

We’ll see you again in December for “A Candlelight of Carols,” featuring a Brass Quintet to celebrate the Christmas Season with warm and wonderful songs old and new.

In May, “Cathedral Classics” will include a performance of Kim Andre Arnesen’s Magnificat, the very piece we were rehearsing to perform for you when the lights went out on live concerts.

Be sure to keep an eye on our website (www.vachoralsociety.org) and like us on Facebook to keep up with all the news in the months to come! Thank you for your support of the Virginia Choral Society. We love to sing for you, and we look forward to seeing you and your friends and family at our next concert.

Sincerely,

Mary-William BainesManaging Director

Artistic Director’s Program Notes

We are so excited to see you again! It has been a long 20 months without a Virginia Choral Society live concert. While we are grateful for the technology and ingenuity that allowed us to continue to rehearse and share our music with you during that time, we are ELATED to finally sing for you in person!

One of my absolute favorite times of year is the fall. Things are finally cooling down a bit, the night air gets a little bit crisp, and some of the best flavors come into season. The sun sets a bit earlier, allowing us the perfect setting for sharing spooky stories in the cool dark night…

What draws us to these tales of terror? Some folks love that rush of adrenaline we feel when something pops out from behind a corner to frighten us. Others are always seeking to explore the unknown, pushing the envelope of how much “fear” they can tolerate.

Tonight’s concert takes you on an adventure through a variety of music written around the theme of night and scary stories. We’ll visit lighthearted songs of wizarding schools and ghoulish galas, and travel to tunes that are perfect for raising goosebumps from the productions of Sweeney Todd and the Addams Family. We’ll even take you back in time to those childhood memories of creepy creaking sounds and monsters under the bed!

Welcome to spooky season, friends! Curl up with your imaginary cup of cocoa and enjoy the fun!

Libera Me (Translation)Free Me, Lord

Free me, Lord, from eternal death,on that terrible day, on that day. When the skies are to be moved, when the skies are to be moved, and the earth. As you’ll come to judge the aeon/world by fire. Terrified, terrified I have been caused to become, and I fear, as the tremor will comeand the rage is going to come. That day, the day of rage, danger and miseryThat day, the greatand bitter, very bitter day. Bestow us eternal rest, Lord, and constant light may shine for them, may shine for them. Free me, Lord, from eternal death,on that terrible day, on that day. When the skies are to be moved, when the skies are to be moved, and the earth. As you’ll come to judge the aeon/world by fire. Free me, Lord, from eternal death.Free me, Lord.

The Moon and Me

When the daylight ends and the moon ascends,I would rather be just the moon and me. When I feel her pull, then my heart is full, And the night is softly, sweetly calling, “Fester, look and see.”

It’s a dream that’s coming true when the moon says, “I love you.”

Though I’m told it’s wrong when I sing my song, She accepts, she attends, she believes, she befriends.

It’s a dream that’s coming true when the moon says, “I love you.” How it can feel when love is real, It’s a dream that’s coming true when the moon says, “I love you.”It’s a dream that’s coming true when the moon says, “I love you.

Double Trouble

Double, double toil and trouble,Fire burn, and cauldron bubble;Double, doubleToil and trouble;Something wicked this way comes.

Eye of newt and toe of frog,Wool of bat and tongue of dog, Adder’s fork and bond-worm’s sting.Lizard’s leg and owlet’s wing.

Double, double toil and trouble,Fire burn, and cauldron bubble;Double, doubleToil and trouble;Something wicked this way comes. In the cauldron boil and bake,Filet of a fenny snake,Scale of dragon, tooth of wolf,Witches’ mummy maw and gulf.

Double, double toil and trouble,Fire burn, and cauldron bubble;Double, double toil and trouble,Fire burn, and cauldron bubble;Double, double toil and trouble,Fire burn, and cauldron bubble;Something wicked this way comes.

Libera Me

Libera me, Domine, de morte æterna, In die illa tremenda, in die illa. Quando coeli movendi sunt, Quando coeli movendi sunt et terra. Dum veneris judicare saeculum per ignem.Tremens, tremens factus sum ego, Et timeo, dum discussio venerit At que ventura ira.Dies illa, dies iræ, Calamitatis et miseriæ. Dies illa, dies magna Et amara, amara valde.Requiem æternum donna eis, Domine, Et lux perpetua luceat eis, luceat eis.Libera me, Domine, de morte æternum, In die illa tremenda, in die illa. Quando coeli movendi sunt, Quando coeli movendi sunt et terra. Dum veneris judicare saeculum per ignem.Libera me, Domine, de morte æterna. Libera me, Domine.

Die Mainacht (The May Night)

When the silvery moon shines through the tall, dark trees, And sheds shimmering light over the glowing grass, And the nightingale singing: There I wonder from bush to bush.

Hiding there in the leaves, I hear two turtledoves Cooing softly of love. Yet, do I turn away, Seeking dark, lonely shadows: And a burning, hot tear now flows.

When, O friend, smiling bright, here in the morning light, My soul shines in your face. Shall I find you on earth? And a burning, hot tear still flows, While burning my cheek with grief.

The Slender Moon

The slender moon in its silv’ry sheen, the golden stars with the blue between of a dreamy summer sky; And still the night, the night winds sigh. (Repeat)

With the silv’ry moon to whisper to, and the golden stars to kiss, mid the blue of a list’ning summer sky, for what should the night winds sigh?

The slender moon in its silv’ry sheen, the golden stars with the blue between of a dreamy summer sky And still the night, the night winds sigh. And still the night, the night winds sigh.

The slender moon, the slender moon. The slender moon, the slender moon.

Things That Go Bump in the Night (3 Movements)

I. And the moon is listening…. I lie in bed at night and listen. Doors creak and walls moan, Faucets drip and the house is settling. And the moon is listening….

I lie in bed at night and listen. Mice creep and clocks tick, Marking time while we are dreaming. And the moon is listening…

My cats go bumpity-bump all night, Mischief happening left and right. Bumpity-bumpity-bumpity-bumpity-bump!

I life in bed at night and listen. Snow falls and branches sway, Wind chimes clatter in the breeze. And the moon is listening… And I drift to sleep…

II. There it is again! Cracking lumber Wakes me from my slumber, And my fear takes hold. Sky and clouds brawl, Simple things make my skin crawl, And the night grows suddenly loud and

dark and cold.

I hold my breath, and dare not make a peep. I try to go back to sleep…I can’t go back

to sleep…

Oooooooo, Oooooooo What’s that? I hear a creaking and moaning Souls in agony are groaning. Ooooooo, Oooooooo There it is again! - Who’s there?

It’s getting louder, and louder, and louder!

Something’s peeking in my window! Something’s creeping under my bed! Is it alive or is it dead? Does it even have a head?

If I close my eyes, maybe it won’t be ableto see me! What’s that shadow that I see? Is it a spider bigger than me? Should I hide or should I flee? There it is again! I feel my house shaking...shaking…shaking…NO!, You’re shaking! I’m so scared I rattle the sheets! I’m so scared I start to freeze! I’m so scared I start to grow a beard!

Footsteps in the hall…I’m not afraid, not at all...Still, to be certain, I’ll hide behind the curtain, Standing very still like a statue...A roar and a rip and then I know it’s a...it’s a...it’s a...And it’s coming closer, and closer, and closer…Suddenly it’s here! I’m paralyzed by fear! And it’s coming towards me and I hear this noise:

GET BACK IN BED!

I turn on the light, not a shadow in sight So I go back to sleep, and I don’t hear a peep.

III. Things that go Bump in the Night I pull the covers from my face, and

glance around the room. The light of dawn reveals no trace That I had been visited by creatures of doom. Things that go bump in the night just might Make somebody get light with fright.

They get so scared that they won’t be prepared for the Things that go bump in the night. But they know it isn’t true, And hopefully so do you.

The Ballad of Sweeney Todd

The Ballad of Sweeney Todd Attend the tale of Sweeney Todd. His skin was pale and his eye was odd. He shaved the faces of gentlemen who never thereafter were heard of again.

He trod a path that few have trod, did Sweeney Todd. The demon barber of Fleet Street.

He kept a shop in London town, of fancy clients and good renown. And what if none of their souls were saved? They went to their maker impeccably shavedby Sweeney, by Sweeney Todd. The demon barber of Fleet Street.

Swing your razor wide, Sweeney, hold it to the skies!Freely flows the blood of those who moralize.

His needs were few, his room was bare: a lavabo and a fancy chair, a mug of suds and a leather strop, an apron, a towel, a pail and a mop. For neatness he deserves a nod, does Sweeney Todd, The demon barber of Fleet Street.

Sweeney wishes the world away, Sweeney’s weeping for yesterday, hugging the blade, waiting the years, hearing the music that nobody hears. Sweeney waits in the parlor hall, Sweeney leans on the office wall. No one can help, nothing can hide you, Isn’t that Sweeney there beside you? No one can help, nothing can hide you. Isn’t that Sweeney there beside you? Sweeney wishes the world away, Sweeney’s weeping for yesterday.

There he is, is Sweeney, Sweeney! Attend the tale of Sweeney Todd. He served a dark and a hungry God. To seek revenge may lead to hell, but everyone does it, if seldom as well as Sweeney, Sweeney Todd, The demon barber of Fleet Street!

Little Shop of Horrors

On the twenty-first day of the month of September in an early year of a decade not too long before our own, the human race suddenly encountered a deadly threat to its very existence. And this terrifying enemy surfaced, as such enemies often do, in the seemingly most innocent and unlikely of places. Little shop, little shoppa horrors. Little shop, little shoppa terror. Call a cop. Little shoppa horrors. No, oh, oh, no-oh! Little shop, little shoppa horrors. Bop sh’bop, little shoppa terror. Watch ‘em drop! Little shoppa horrors. No, oh, oh, no-oh! Shing-a-ling, what a creepy thing to be happening! Shang-a-lang, feel the sturm and drang in the air. Sha-la-la, stop right where you are. Don’t you move a thing. You better (tellin’ you, you better) Tell your mama somethin’s gonna get her She better (ev’rybody better) Beware! Little shop, little shoppa horrors. Bop sh-bop, you’ll never stop the terror. Little shop, little shoppa horrors. No, oh, oh, no, oh, oh, no, oh, oh, no!

Oh, little shop, little shoppa horrors. Bop sh’bop, You’ll never stop the terror, Little shop, little shoppa horrors, No, oh, oh, no, oh, oh, no, oh, oh, no!

Children Will Listen

How do you say to your child in the night,“Nothing’s all black, but then nothing’s all white?”How do you say, “It will all be all right”When you know that it might n’t be true? What do you do?

What do you leave to your child when you’re dead?Only whatever you put in its head.Things that your father and other had said,Which were left to them, too.

Careful what you sayCareful the things you say,Children will listenCareful the things you do, Children will see and learn

Children may not obey, but children will listenChildren will look to you for which way to turnTo learn what to be.

Careful before you say “Listen to me”Children will listen.

Careful the wish you make,Wishes are children.

Careful the path they take-Wishes come true, not free

Careful the spell you castNot just on children

Sometimes the spell may lastPast what you can seeAnd turn against you

Careful the tale you tellThat is the spellChildren will listen

Monster Mash

I was working in the lab, late one night When my eyes beheld an eerie sight For my monster from his slab, began to rise And suddenly to my surprise…

He did the monster mash (The monster mash) It was a graveyard smash (He did the mash) It caught on in a flash (He did the mash) He did the monster mash

From my laboratory in the castle east To the master bedroom where the vampires feast The ghouls all came from their humble abodes To get a jolt from my electrodesThey did the monster mash (The monster mash) It was a graveyard smash (They did the mash) It caught on in a flash (They did the mash) They did the monster mash

The zombies were having fun (Wa hoo, in a shoop, wah-oo) The party had just begun (in a shoop, wah-oo) The guests included Wolfman, Dracula and his son The scene was rockin’, all were digging the sounds Igor on chains, backed by his baying hounds The coffin-bangers were about to arrive With their vocal group, ‘The Crypt-Kicker Five’

They played the monster mash (The monster mash) It was a graveyard smash (They played the mash) It caught on in a flash (They played the mash) They played the monster mashOut from his coffin, Drac’s voice did ring Seems he was troubled by just one thing He opened the lid and shook his fist and said “Whatever happened to my Transylvania Twist?

It’s now the monster mash (The monster mash) And it’s a graveyard smash (It’s now the mash) It’s caught on in a flash (It’s now the mash) It’s now the monster mash

Now everything’s cool, Drac’s a part of the band And my Monster Mash is the hit of the land For you, the living, this mash was meant too When you get to my door, tell them Boris sent you

Then you can monster mash (The monster mash) And do my graveyard smash (Then you can mash) You’ll catch on in a flash (Then you can mash) Then you can monster mashEasy Igor, you impetuous young boy (Wa hoo, monster mash) (Wa hoo, monster mash) (Wa hoo, monster mash) (Wa hoo, monster mash) (Wa hoo, monster mash)
