l Cultural celebration

You’re here in Hawai‘i and the one thing that’s a must-do before leaving is to experience a culturally invigorating, authentic lu‘au (Hawaiian feast). The variety of lu‘au mentioned here all offer visitors an evening of good food, and lively hula and polynesian dance performances, leaving you with the feeling of ‘ohana (family) before the end of the night. When entering the grounds, guests are greeted with a friendly “aloha,” lei, tropical beverage and just maybe a spectacular sunset. If offered, take part in ancient Hawaiian games, cultural activities, and see the unearthing of the pig from the ‘imu (underground oven). And should you be invited to join the dancers onstage, don’t be shy, because it’s all part of the lu‘au experience!

Enjoy a tasty buffet feast, hip-shakin’ hula, crafts and more at a

DukeThe Father of International Surfing anda look at Hawai‘i’s Surfing Stars Today

The Past Born on August 24, 1890, Duke Kahanamoku was raised in Waikiki. There, he attended grammar school and spent his days with beachboys, eventually forming Hui Nalu or “Club of the Waves.” Discovered “swimming like a fish” at Sans Souci Beach by William T. Rawlins, 21-year-old Kahanamoku gained an enthusiastic first coach. Kahanamoku broke the world record in 100-yard freestyle by 4.6 seconds on August 11, 1911 in a swimming competition held at Honolulu Harbor. On the same day, he went on to break the world record for the 50-yard freestyle swim. Kahanamoku’s Olympic aspirations resulted in a gold medal in the 100-meter freestyle competition at the 1912 Olympic Games in Stockholm, Sweden. He repeated the win at the Antwerp games in 1920.

The Present Today, surfing remains deeply rooted in the local culture, much to the credit of the native Hawaiians and undeniably, Duke Kahanamoku. It has produced many local surfing professionals including two of Hawai‘i’s recent success stories, Carissa Moore and John John Florence. Honolulu surfer girl, Carissa Moore, 19, was recognized as the 2011 ASP Women’s World Tour Champion. In 2007 at the Roxy Pro Competition in Australia, she was the youngest-ever finalist. In fact, Moore has been the youngest competitor in all the competitions she’s won. North Shore local boy, John John Florence, 19, is another surf talent. Earlier this year John John won the 2012 Volcom Pipe Pro, and this past December after competing in his first-ever Vans Triple Crown, Florence became the youngest surfer to win the overall title—the most sought after title in the surfing world.

Famed surfer, swimmer and Olympic gold

medalist Duke Kahanamoku became

known as ‘The Father of International Surfing,’ and

was credited for introducing surfingaround the world.

Top athletes compete in a week-long series of events at the 11th Annual Duke’s OceanFest,Waikiki’s premier ocean sports festival

Discover & Learn About Hawai‘i’s HistoryLocated in the historic Kalihi district of Honolulu, Bishop Museum, named after Princess Bernice Pauahi Bishop, was founded in 1889 and built by her husband, Charles Reed Bishop, in honor of his wife. Charles wished to preserve his wife’s royal heirlooms that had been passed down to him after her death. To this day, the Bishop Museum is recognized as home to the world’s largest collection of Polynesian cultural and scientific artifacts. While visiting the museum, stop by the various exhibition halls including the Richard T. Mamiya Science Adventure Center, which is a 16,500-square-foot facility that provides interactive exhibits on the geology that shaped these islands.

Visit a Hawaiian Jewelry Design CenterMaui Divers Jewelry was founded in 1958 and today it remains the largest jewelry manufacturer and retailer in Hawai‘i. Take a 20-minute tour of the design center where you’ll get a first-look at the exhibit area. Here, see the unique coral trees in their natural state and hear the story of the yacht bound for Tahiti, and how its fateful voyage played a special part in Maui Divers’ history. Also learn about the challenges of the search and discovery of Hawai‘i’s rare and precious corals including the Hawaiian Black Coral, as well as the rare Hawaiian Gold Coral. You’ll also view a short film, highlighting the harvesting of coral and get to see designers and skilled artisans at work on intricate jewelry pieces.

Explore Kualoa’s Vast ValleyEstablished in 1850, Kualoa was created as a 4,000-acre working cattle ranch. It was also once a place that was sacred to the ancient Hawaiians, a residence for the kings, a place of refuge, and a training ground for royalty. In Hawaiian, kualoa means “long back,” which describes the ranch’s beautiful mountain peaks and lush valleys. Today, Kualoa is located on the windward side of O‘ahu. Take a journey through its vast landscape on an ATV (All-Terrain Vehicle), where you’ll cross streams to reach scenic valleys and remote areas rarely visited by others. You can also explore Kualoa by horseback and go to see “Secret Island”—an ancient fishpond—that can be accessed by boat.

King Kamehameha Day The Kamehameha Dynasty King Kamehameha I established a dynasty that ruled the Hawaiian Islands for more than a century. His descendants would rule uncontested until the overthrow of the Hawaiian kingdom in 1893. Legend has it that his auspicious birth coincided with the appearance of Halley’s Comet as it streaked across the sky. Soothsayers of the age saw it as a sign of impending greatness for a man who would unify the Hawaiian Islands (1810) under one rule.

The Prophecy Shortly after Kamehameha’s (pronounced kuh-meh-hah-meh-hah) birth, a holy man (kahuna) warned of this “rebel infant” who would be a slayer of chiefs and recommended that the baby be put to death. Kamehameha’s grandfather, King Alapa‘i, complied with the warning, but not before priests hid the infant in a cave in North Kohala on the Big Island where he was raised in secret by surrogate parents. Word of the child’s survival didn’t get back to Alapa‘i until several years later, at which time Kamehameha was allowed back into the royal court. By the 1780s, Kamehameha had risen in the ranks to become an important chief on the island of Hawai‘i where he first consolidated his power. The shadow of the prophecy had followed him throughout his young life and within 25 years, the “one set apart,” had fulfilled it. He launched brutal and bloody campaigns that resulted in the complete consolidation of power and earned him the title of King Kamehameha the Great.

The Napoleon of the Pacific Among his many accomplishments, Kamehameha created the Law of the Splintered Paddle, which protected the common man from murder, theft and plundering by chiefs. He also wisely divided the conquered lands among his high chiefs in detached parcels to diffuse the possibility of rebellion and to create an enduring peace across the land.

In 1871 King Kamehameha V proclaimed King

Kamehameha Day in honor of his great grandfather, King

Kamehameha I. The first such holiday was celebrated on June 11, 1872. It was also

one of the first holidays proclaimed in 1959 when Hawai‘i became a state. This year it will again be

observed on June 11.

•Friday, June 8 - STATUE LEI-DRAPING CEREMONY (ALI‘IOLANI HALE, DOWNTOWN HONOLULU). From 3:30 p.m., the statue of King Kamehameha I will be decorated with 13-foot-long floral lei, created on-site throughout the day by volunteers. Music and hula performances add to the colorful display. A very memorable photo op!

•Saturday, June 9 - 96TH ANNUAL KING KAMEHAMEHA CELEBRATION FLORAL PARADE (DOWNTOWN HONOLULU TO WAIKIKI). This year’s theme is “Wahine Holo Lio—Honoring the Noble Tradition of Pa‘u Riding.” From 9 a.m., colorful floral floats, marching bands and pa‘u riders take to the streets in the longest parade in Hawai‘i. It begins at King and Richards Streets in downtown Honolulu, continues on Punchbowl St., onto Ala Moana Blvd. then merges into Kalakaua Ave., ending at Queen Kapi‘olani Park for the King Kamehameha Ho‘olaule‘a. Awards presentation follows. Craft demonstrations and food booths, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. *For King Kamehameha Day events on Maui, the Big of Hawai‘i and Kaua‘i, see page 31.

Hawai‘i Film ToursOver the past 40 years, O‘ahu, Maui, the Big Island of Hawai‘i and Kaua‘i have been “the” destination islands for filming motion pictures and television shows. On O‘ahu, there was the recent filming of “Pirates of the Carribean: On Stranger Tides,” along the island’s eastern shores. Take a “Circle Island Tour” and your guide will likely mention where this film, among many others, was filmed around O‘ahu.

Head out to Kualoa for the “Movie Sites & Ranch Tour.” You’ll experience the famed Ka‘a‘awa Valley, known as the “Backlot of Hawai‘i,” to see where many of Hollywood’s biggest blockbuster movies and TV shows were, and still are, filmed. Look for the “Jurassic Park” site and visit countless other locations including sites from “50 First Dates” and “Lost.” You might even see shooting in progress, perhaps for the TV series “Hawaii Five-0!” On Kaua‘i, take a helicopter ride to see the famous Manawaipuna Falls seen on “Jurassic Park.” Other famous films shot on location on the neighbor islands include “Just Go With It” on Maui and “Waterworld” on the Big Island of of Hawai‘i. Book online at PleasantActivities.com for all your film-tour activities or talk to one of our professionals! Call 1-888-229-7770.

Lights, Camera—ACTION!Hawai‘i in the Movies! There’s no denying that the Hawaiian Islands have been a major locale for filming hundreds of television shows such as “Hawaii Five-0” to this year’s, Academy Award-nominated movie, “The Descendents,” starring George Clooney. Here, we take a look at some of the TV shows and movies filmed in Hawai‘i, and tour options that’ll take you in and around the filming locations.

Haleakala National Park is a U.S. National Park where the land covers an area of 30,183 acres. It’s situated on a dormant volcano that rises 10,023 feet above sea level and measures 3,000 feet deep with a 21-mile circumference. Haleakala (House of the Sun) is the highest point on Maui. Here, discover rare endangered plants such as the Haleakala silversword; the endangered nene (Hawaiian goose), Hawai‘i’s state bird; and cinder cones. Explore the park along numerous hiking trails too.

Maui offers activities for people of all ages and fitness levels. Traverse the terrain of Haleakala National Park; climb up to a Mountain Outpost then zipline over Maui’s lush greenery for almost two miles; drive along the Hana Coast then hike to check out local sights and landmarks; or discover Maui by horseback. So,

what makes Maui so special? The island offers a diverse range of activities for everyone to experience why, “Maui No Ka ‘Oi!” why “Maui, is the best!”

Face New Heights on an Outdoor Adventure!Explore new heights with Kapalua Adventures. Once you reach the Mountain Outpost, located 1,400-feet above sea level, you’ll launch onto an exhilarating zipline ride—one of the country’s largest ziplines, nearly two miles long—where you will see scenic views of West Maui and Lana‘i. Each of the ziplines runs parallel alongside the other, enabling two riders to zip side-by-side—great for friends and family! It also cuts time in half, spent waiting for other riders. Check out various zipline tour packages that feature up to seven zipline courses, combo tours and additional activities including the “5 Zip Line Tour with Giant Swing.” Unique to the islands, the two-person Giant Swing pulls riders up to a maximum height of 40 feet, where guests then self-release down and across the valley, experiencing the thrill of free-falling, while enjoying scenic views of the island. Also walk along the longest suspension bridge in Hawai‘i, up to 130-feet high in some spots, and 360-feet long. At the end of your day, you’ll remember all the excitement of your sky-high adventures above Maui.

Big Island by land l

Escape to the BIGGEST island in the Hawaiian chain! When you travel to the Big Island of Hawai‘i, you’ll find a myriad of activities for the whole family. Discover endangered birds in their natural habitat or ride an ATV along the rim of Waipi‘o Valley!

Navigate through Waipi‘o ValleyWaipi‘o Valley—also known as the Valley of the Kings—is a mystical place that was once the political and religious center of Hawai‘i. Today, enjoy a four-wheel adventure on an ATV tour with Waipi‘o RideTheRim. True to the company name, you’ll “ride along the rim” of Waipi‘o Valley and pass through eucalyptus forests on a three-hour journey that will also take you to the top of Waipi‘o, where you will see lush scenery and panoramic views.

Hike Through A Tropical Rainforest, Enjoy a Zipline Tour!Let Hawaii Forest & Trail lead you on a tour that takes you to two very different environments—a tropical rainforest and a dryland forest. Native Hawaiian dry forests are some of the most endangered ecosystems in the world. While hiking, keep your eyes peeled for two endemic birds—the ‘amakihi, and the local species of the ‘elepaio (noted for the white feathering on its head). Also try the exhilarating tree canopy zipline tour offered by Kohala Zipline. You’ll fly over remnants of old taro terraces, traverse forested, stream-rich land on the northern tip of the Big Island, and zip from tree-to-tree, also flying past native Hawaiian flora, such as native kukui trees, fragrant gingers and blossoming ‘ohi‘a shrubs.

An Exciting Journey to Kealakekua BayHave fun with the “Beat the Crowd” Mid Day Adventure tour aboard Captain Zodiac generally scheduled on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. Head out to Kealakekua Bay after other boats have departed, thus providing an excellent, uncrowded snorkel experience. Captains also have the option to either add a second snorkel site for more sightseeing or add more time to spend with dolphins. The tour features a light deli lunch, chips, cookies, fresh local pineapple, bottled water and soft drinks.

Watch Dolphins in their HabitatDolphin Discoveries offers unique ocean experiences that will create a lifetime of memories. The ultimate Kona Dolphin Swim Adventure takes you into the world of the Hawaiian Spinner Dolphin, where you’ll see their playful antics while learning about dolphins’ behavior from naturalist guides. Snorkel tours take you to two of the best sites on the island. Explore the pristine marine sanctuary at Cook’s Monument at Kealakekua Bay and the Place of Refuge. Kealakekua Bay is a historical area where Captain Cook discovered the Big Island in the late 1700’s. And when you snorkel at the Place of Refuge, you’ll see colorful species of fish, coral reefs and perhaps the Hawaiian Green Sea Turtle!

This year marks 100 years for the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory (HVO), and similarly, Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park also has reason to celebrate as the United States Mint will feature the park on a commemorative 2012 quarter. Here’s a brief look at the important role of HVO over the past century and how they’re celebrating their many achievements.

Hawaiian Volcano Observatory: Who? What? Why?The U.S. Geological Survey’s (USGS) Hawaiian Volcano Observatory celebrates its 100th anniversary of research and monitoring, tracking eruptions and earthquakes. Located on the rim of Kilauea Volcano’s summit caldera within Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park, HVO—the first volcano observatory in the United States—monitors the seismic and volcanic activity of six Hawaiian volcanoes including Kilauea and Mauna Loa, two of the most active volcanoes in the world. Kilauea has erupted 48 times on HVO’s watch, with a nearly continuous flank eruption since 1983, and an ongoing summit eruption since 2008. Mauna Loa—the largest volcano on Earth—has erupted 12 times in the same period, most recently in 1984, when lava flowed to within about four miles of the Hilo city limits. “Volcanic activity and its associated earthquakes are responsible for Hawai‘i’s fertile soil, rainfall, isolated habitat for unique species, breathtaking natural beauty, but also, unfortunately, its geologic hazards,” said USGS Director Marcia McNutt. HVO’s timely and effective warnings help protect the public from these volcanic and seismic hazards—a key mission since the start of the Observatory’s work with the collaboration of Massachusetts Institute of Technology geologist, Thomas A. Jaggar and pioneer volcanologist, Frank Perret. For a century, HVO has also been an international leader in volcanological studies and a magnet for researchers from around the globe. Among other breakthroughs, HVO scientists confirmed that earthquakes and volcanic tremors are closely related to volcanic activity. They installed the first seismic network in the USGS and determined the composition of volcanic gases and their role in driving eruptions. They also pioneered the measurement and

It was designed and sculpted by United States Mint Sculptor-Engraver Charles L. Vickers. “We are extremely honored that Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park was selected by the United States Mint to represent our state on the America the Beautiful quarter, and that they solicited our design input,” said Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park Superintendent

Napali in Hawaiian translates to “the cliffs,” and the people who witness its stunning grandeur are always left in awe. Carved by wind and sea, and spared from development, the remote Napali is intriguing, enchanting and possibly your best vacation memory waiting to happen.

Cruise the Napali CoastIf you’re looking for Hawai‘i’s wilderness, the Napali Coast is it! It’s the most inaccessible and uninhabited area of the state. A mix of enormous spatial proportions, this Eden is a remarkably rugged stretch of coastline marked by towering sea cliffs. Lush valleys that seem to “hang” between razor-sharp cliffs like an unfolding

The Beautiful

Napali Coast

accordion are full of endemic plants, history and sweeping views. Don’t miss your chance to experience one of the Garden Isle’s most dramatic sights, so make reservations for your Napali Coast adventure: Blue Dolphin Charters, Catamaran Kahanu, Holo Holo Charters and Kauai Sea Tours.

Snorkel & SailGaze upon the 3,500-foot heights of the Napali cliffs when you cruise with Catamaran Kahanu. On the “Na Pali 5-hour Snorkel tour” enjoy swimming, snorkeling and lunch at Nu‘alolo Kai, a beautiful and pristine protected reef area where you will see Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles and colorful reef fish. As for what to bring, plan your tour as if you were spending a day at the beach. Come dressed with your swimwear on under your shorts and a T-shirt or cover-up. Since you will be barefoot while on board the catamaran, it is advised to wear slip-on slippers. And as the sun goes down, head out on the memorable “5-hour Sunset Dinner Cruise.” The Napali Coast is a sight to be enjoyed from sea level!

Enjoy views of the majestic Napali Coast from the water.
