5.5.2 Explain the procedure for connecting Cable connector plugs to HF Coaxial cable.

Instructions for connecting cable connector plugs to HF coaxial cable

1. Cut off the coaxial cable somewhat longer than needed (according to local conditions) leaving

enough slack to make a loop when connecting the cable.

2. Loosen the screw and take the plug to pieces.

3. Put the cone and threaded cylinder over the cable.

4. Remove PVC covering and copper braiding for a length of 20 mm(4/5inch)

5. Cut off PVC covering for an additional length of 6 mm( 1/4inch)

6. Slightly spring open the slit section of the plug interior.

7. Push the cable into the spring opening of the above part.

8. Draw the copper braiding through the two holes in the plug interior piece and solder it to the

outside of the plug interior piece.

9. Solder the cable conductor to the plug pin and cut off the part which protrudes.( Do not heat the

pin too long because of the polyethylene insulation)

10. Slide the threaded cylinder and the cone back into position and tighten the screw.

11. Test cable for continuity and short circuit.

12. Fasten the cable beneath the connector plug by means of bracket clip so that the plug is not

subjected to any tension

5.5.3 Demonstration of preparation of HF cable connector by faculty.

5.7 Self - Assessment :

1. PLCC terminal is connected to LMU, in switch yard by means of ---------------------.

2. Coaxial cable is a --------- conductor cable made of a single conductor surrounded by a braided

wired jacket with a plastic insulating material separating the two.

3. The coaxial cable provides ------------- so that noise cannot get into the cable & cause

interference..

4. The characteristic impedance of the coaxial cable is either ---------or ------------ohms

(Co axial cable, two, Shielding, 75 or 125)

8.5.5. Connect NSK 5(G4AE card) to LAPTOP/PC through 25 Pin connector & Explain procedure of

transmission & Reception through Hyper terminal. Write down different steps to start Hyperterminal.

Steps to start Hyper terminal

1. Click on Start button

2. Click on All programs

3. Click on Accessories

4. Click on Communications

5. Click on Hyper terminal link

6. Hyperterminal window will appear

Enter the Name – (for e.g. PLCC)

Click OK button

7. Then “connect to” window will appear

a) Select “connect using “option – Respective COM port

b) Select COM port – Right click on “My computer” icon, click on “properties”, click on

“Hardware”, click on “Device Manager”, click on Ports option

Check on which COM port USB to serial cab le is connected. Select that particular COM port

in the “Connect using List box”

c) Click on “OK”button.

8. Then COM port properties window will appear in that enter

i) Bits per second – 1200

ii) Flow control- X on/X Off

9. Click on “OK” button

After all the above steps Data flow can be checked through hyper terminals.

8.7Self - Assessment :

1.The NSK 5 is a new, fully programmable ------------------------------------------------ (FSK) modem

for data transmission over voice grad telecommunication channel.

2.The NSK 5 modem has been designed using ----------------------------------------(DSP) technology.

3.The NSK 5 MODEM is available in two versions -------------------- & --------------------------. G4AF

modem includes main & standby line connections for the Tx & Rx. G4AE uses the same printed

circuit board as the G4AF but it does not include the standby lines.

4.DIL switch S2 allows the ------------------Sensitivity to be adjusted over a range of 21 dB.

5.The modem transmit level setting depends on the ------------------------. The transmit level of the

600 Bd to 2400 Bd can be set by jumpers. The level of the others needs to be set with the

potentiometer.

6.The line termination jumpers must be in positions ----- & --------- .

7.The NSK 5 modem has two special high speed channels that are optimized to work over the ETL

These are the 1200 Bd above speech & the ------------Bd channels.

8.When the modem is used for transmitting over an ETL link then the channel center frequency and

the -------------------- must be chosen so that it does not interfere with the ETL pilot, NSD 50

protection equipment or speech.

9. The NSK 5 Modem termination impedance can be set on ---------- ohm or a high impedance.

10. The -------- level is set using CA, CB, CC, CD, CE, CF jumpers.
