2 Abstract

The PLC (PowerLine Communication) module provides the connectivity of any one of several serial interfaces viapower line. Both point-to-point and multi-point connections are possible. The data will be transmitted as TCP/IPpackets over the power line. The special feature of the module is that it can run without any additional hardwareon the powerline. The module has TTL level serial interfaces. The galvanic isolation from the power line is doneon the module. The QCA7000 from Qualcomm guarantees the compatibility with many other commercial powerlinedevices.

This electronic component is sensitive to electrostatic discharge (ESD).

The circuitry on the board is connected to the High Voltage potential. To avoid electrical shock do not touchthis product when it is under voltage.

Future releases of this product will have RESET L connected to pin PTA14 instead of PTA4 of the MK20processor. Please be aware of that change if you plan to reset the QCA7000 via this pin.

Connectors and operating elements

All LEDs have red color. LED5 and push button S1 are used for push button simple connect function. All otherLEDs and DIP switches can be used from customers user program.

7 GETTING STARTED

7 Getting started

An easy way to put PLC-Stamp 1 into operation is to link two of them with each other. So two user electronics canbe coupled via powerline.

Devices that share the same NMK (Network Membership Key) will form a logical network when connected to com-mon powerline media. If you are not sure that your PLC-Stamp 1 have the same NMK, please use the push buttonsimple connect function. Press the simple connect pushbutton (S1) on one of the PLC-Stamp 1 for less than 3seconds. Press the simple connect pushbutton (S1) on the other PLC-Stamp 1 connected to the same medium forless than 3 seconds. Wait a few seconds for the two devices to form a network. This function will shown with aflashing LED5 while forming the network. When the LED is steady on the process was successful. For removing aPLC-Stamp 1 from a network you can use the same simple connect pushbutton function with pressing the buttononly at the PLC-Stamp 1 that has to be removed.The firmware for the QCA7000 is already loaded in production.The firmware for the MK20 has to build up from user. I2SE delivers a set of software libraries and program examplesto make it easy to realize your software application.For debugging and flashing you can use the serial wire debug (SWD) interface. The picture shows how you canconnect the SWD port with a simple pin header.

8 MAC addresses

Each PLC-Stamp 1 gets two successive MAC addresses from I2SE. The first is for the QCA7000 and the secondis for the MK20 controller. The MAC addresses are printed on a label on PLC-Stamp 1. If you want to use yourown MAC addresses it is possible to change them. Please note, that each firmware for the MK20 has to get it’s ownMAC address. (see software documentation)

The SWD interface is like JTAG an ARM supported debug interface. For use of SWD interface make sure that yourdevelopment environment is up to SWD.

These LEDs are connected to the microcontroller. Please refer to the firmware examples for controlling those LEDs.

10.2 LED5

This LED is connected directly to the QCA7000. It’s behaviour is determined by the QCA7000 firmware which isstored in the flash. The following events triggers this LED in in descending priority:

11.3 Safety and insulation rated parameters

The creepage and clearance distances between mains and client side are 5.5 mm. The creepage distance betweenmains and client side in inner layers is 2.0 mm.In the area of the planar transformer we have the following layer construction:

13 Software

The QCA7000 software will be programmed in the flash already so that you can start using it right away but themodule is shipped with no software in the microcontroller. To use the board you will have to write your own firmware.You can get started by using firmware examples and libraries that are available in the Web Support page for thePLC-Stamp 1.

This way you can implement your own protocols using UART, SPI, CAN or simply GPIO.

The Network Membership Key (NMK) that is used for forming a logical network is50:D3:E4:93:3F:85:5B:70:40:78:4D:F8:15:AA:8D:B7 (Cleartext: HomePlugAV). This key can be changed byusing “I2SE libmme” from your microcontroller. This library can be found on the Web Support page.The Device Access Key (DAK) that restricts access to critical device functions has a default value of68:9F:07:4B:8B:02:75:A2:71:0B:0B:57:79:AD:16:30 (Cleartext: HomePlugAV) for all units unless it is otherwisenoted. You can not change this Key. For highest security it is recommended that each device has a different DAK.

16.1 Issue 1: Hickup Issues

When the 3.3 V power supply collapses for a short period of time the MK20 processor might lock up. To prevent thisyou should enable the Low Voltage Detection Reset (register LVDRE = 1) and set the Low Voltage Detect Voltageto high (LVDV=01).

16.2 Issue 2: Slow Power Up Ramp

When the 3.3 V power supply ramps up slowly from 0 V (slower than 10 ms from 0 to 3.3V) the MK20 processormight not start correctly. You can fix this issue by cutting a trace between the QCA7000 and the MK20. This willhave the side effect that you are no longer able to control the QCA7000 reset in your MK20 software. The trace thathas to be cut to resolve this issue is between QCA7000 RESET L (Pin 5) and MK20 PTA4 (Pin J8) as shown as redtrace on the green PCB in image figure 1. Carefully cut it anywhere in the makred area.

Future releases of this product will have RESET L connected to pin PTA14 of the MK20 processor. Please be awareof that change if you plan to reset the QCA7000 via this pin.

Units affected by this issue are flashed with QCA7000 firmware Version MAC-QCA7000-1.1.0.11-00-20130131-FINAL, which will cause the VS PL LNK STATUS MME to always report Link Up (0x01).The Issue can be resolved by replacing the original firmware by the version MAC-QCA7000-1.1.0.32-01-20130326-FINAL or newer.

16.4 Issue 4: Temperature Range degraded

Units that are effected by this issue will have a temperature rating below the original specification. The correct ratingfor this units is 0°C - 85°C.
