PLC School Performance Report 2011 From the Principal Paul Brock, in ‘Towards schooling in the 21st century’, states that “education can, indeed must, play a most important role in confronting issues of national and global significance in the 21st century”. While Australia is rolling out a national curriculum, it could be argued that what we need is education on a global level – for without a truly educated global community, we will not easily understand one another better, talk to one another in each other’s languages, grow and learn together because we value others’ way of seeing the world or elevate conversations as to how, collectively, we manage the limits of constraints imposed by our planet. PLC has chosen the International Baccalaureate (IB) as a significant step in addressing these needs and educating our young women to be global citizens. The 2011 school year saw the extension of programmes offered to include the IB Diploma for Years 11 and 12 and our first pioneering cohort of students. It is a logical transition from the philosophy and pedagogy of the Middle Years Programme (MYP) and one that prepares students well for tertiary studies. It very much complements the more liberal education of the undergraduate courses now offered at the University of Western Australia and the University of Melbourne. Additionally, the decision has been taken to commence the MYP in Year 6 rather than Year 7. This provides students with five years to achieve the rigorous criteria and, importantly, provides for continuity of curriculum between the Junior School and Middle School, as Year 6 will remain as leaders of the Junior School. The IB organisation returned in 2011 to evaluate the School’s MYP. The regular five-year evaluation process is both a requirement and a service provided by the IB to authorised schools. It ensures the quality and fidelity of the programme across all IB world schools is maintained through a process of formal reflection by all stakeholders within a school community against the IB Programme Standards and Practices. I congratulate our MYP Co-ordinator and Deputy Principal, Kim Edwards, together with the team of MYP Heads of Department on receiving a report with many commendations. The process has allowed us to refine objectives for the next five-year cycle, particularly connecting learning across subjects to support depth of understanding while still maintaining separate disciplines of learning. In the Junior School, we welcomed Heather Pope as our new Head of Junior School. We have quickly come to appreciate Heather’s professional knowledge and wisdom, openness and vision for an education that meets the needs of every child as well as her deep understanding of a PYP education. She has set about creating an environment that has encouraged discussion, open communication, evidence-based research and project planning. A strategic plan has been created, shared and, in many cases, acted upon. Across the 2011-12 holiday period, one of the initiatives – creating a 21st century library facility for Junior School - has taken shape. At the end of 2011 we were delighted to receive the positive news that the Federal Government has provided formal recognition that the IB programmes meet the requirements of the Australian Curriculum. What this means is that PLC is teaching the Australian curriculum but within an IB framework that is holistic, bilingual and based on cultural awareness and international understanding. The vision for PLC, which is mirrored so well by the philosophy of IB, is to prepare young women - the decision makers of tomorrow - to live in a complex multicultural and connected world and to have the skills and attitudes to be part of a shared future. In the words of Margaret Mead: “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has. Beth Blackwood, Principal

PLC School Performance Report 2011 From the Principal

Paul Brock, in ‘Towards schooling in the 21st century’, states that “education can, indeed must, play a most important role in confronting issues of national and global significance in the 21st century”.

Parent, Student and Teacher Satisfaction Parents PLC provides a number of opportunities, both formal and informal, for parents to be engaged with the School’s programmes and with the progress of their daughters. Parents are encouraged to approach the School, through the relevant Year Co-ordinator, at any time for specific discussions, and regular exchanges of information are provided through the diary system, Semester Reporting and in Student-Parent-Teacher interviews. Support Your Daughter Evenings are held in first term for each year group and are ideal opportunities for communicating with teachers and other parents and for seeking feedback. A tradition of vibrant and active support groups enable parents to become involved with the School’s activities. The PLC Auxiliary and its Year Group Representatives, the Parents’ Committee, and each of the support groups such as Friends of Music, Theatre Arts, Rowing and Boarding offer many fundraising and social events as well as providing forums for seeking feedback on academic, pastoral care and co-curricular activities. Our Support Group Representatives facilitate two-way communication between parents, the PLC Council and the Principal. The Old Collegians’ Association, which represents alumni, is also actively involved in the School and facilitates direct communication and feedback. Our commitment to rural Western Australia meant visits to field days at Dowerin, Wagin, Broome, Karratha, Kununurra, Newdegate, Mingenew and Margaret River as well as a reunion for current, past and future parents and Old Collegians in Broome. PLC visits and reunions in other states and countries also provided occasions for valuable feedback and the exchange of ideas. The PLC Links, a weekly newsletter and the bi-annual magazine Blackwatch magazine, together with the Annual Review keep parents informed of the activities, achievements, opportunities and involvement of their daughters at the School. Students Student views are regularly gauged through the Student Council and Middle School Forum where the girls are encouraged to raise issues that affect them, to respect the views of others and to implement initiatives. Make a Difference (MAD) Week, a project developed by the Student Service Captains, is now prominent in the School calendar and works to reinforce the belief that each individual can make a difference. Other examples of student co-ordinated initiatives include the Cambodia Sewing Project and The Cancer Council Relay for Life. Classes, House and House Tutor Group meetings all provide a supportive and safe environment in which girls can express their concerns, accept challenges, take risks, and develop confidence and leadership skills which encourage them to act positively for the good of the community. International and national tours and exchanges enable students to broaden their perspectives, and expand their studies in various curriculum areas. In 2011 students pursued a diverse range of interests in many destinations including the Kimberley, NIDA in Sydney and tours to Canberra, France and Cambodia. Four students were selected to attend the International Leadership Academy at the Institute of Civic Leadership in Vancouver, Canada; five students undertook exchanges in Vienna, South Africa and Japan; and three students won Rotary International Youth Exchanges for 12 months. PLC has also been host to students from South Africa, Austria, Germany, China and Japan. Students report back to the School on the outcomes of these tours via written reports and presentations at assemblies.

Staff PLC staff are involved in annual performance reviews which enable expectations to be clarified, constructive feedback to be exchanged and professional development needs to be identified. The School has a range of communication channels for staff. These include Departmental and Board of Studies meetings for academic matters and Co-ordinator/Tutor meetings, Heads of Schools and Senior Leadership meetings for pastoral care. Furthermore, the Principal has an ‘Open Door’ policy for all issues, the Head of Staff and Deputy Principals are readily available and staff meetings are held regularly. In addition there are Consultative Committees for both Teaching and Non-Teaching Staff. Staff who participate in tours and exchanges report back to the School on the outcomes of these activities via written reports or presentations at assemblies. The PLC Staff Association provides a forum for airing staff views as well as organising social occasions. Income Broken Down by Funding Source
