According to Prof Teresa Amabile of the Harvard Business School: “whatever an individual’s talents… the conditions under which he or she works – can significantly increase or decrease the level of creativity produced.”

The challenge with organisational work today is that it is mostly: serious, stressful, routine, and ultimately draining. This is the exact opposite of the conditions required to encourage individual creativity.

We must shift out of typical work mode into a creative mode.

We call this new mode of coming up with new ideas, Productive Play.

In order to get into this new mode, we require the creation of spaces that are clearly separate from our draining routine. These are less about physical environments and more about creating a new mindspace where individuals can feel free to explore a challenge through playful interaction and be energized to imagine new possibilities.

Workmode and the Playmode of Productive Play are starkly different in the following ways that are relevant to Creativity and Innovation:

•  PARTICIPATION – play pulls us in so that we can contribute our voice. •  IMAGINATION – play breaks down defenses and opens minds.

Adult play is complex and multi-faced, however productive play delivers two key benefits to innovation:
