    SKILL-

Identify phonemes in words and replace phonemes in words.

    PREP-

Print the cards on cardstock to give them extra durability. Cut along the lines to separate the pieces. If you’ll be using the activity in a classroom, you may also want to laminate the cards for extra durability.

Optional: Grab manipulatives for students to slide into the Elkonin boxes as they identify the phonemes in words. Possible options include: sliding magnetic letters, counting chips, driving in Matchbox cars, squishing balls of playdough, clipping small clothespins, sliding LEGO bricks, or writing an X with a dry erase marker.

    PLAY-

Students pick up one card at a time, they say the word out loud normally once and then stretch out the word slowly. They tap their finger (or slide a manipulative) into a box for each phoneme they hear. For instance, if a child was working on the word “bear”, the process would look like this:

“B” (taps the first green box or slides in a manipulative)“ea” (taps the second box or slides in a manipulative)“r” (taps the third box or slides in a manipulative)

    ALTERNATIVE WAYS TO PLAY-

    • Have the child say the word out loud. Then name one of the sounds - either the beginning, middle or end. Ask the student to slide her manipulative into the box where she hears that sound. For instance, in the bear example above, if you named the /r/sound, she would slide only one manipulative into the third box.

    • Add an extra challenge by having kids swap out one of the sounds in a word with a different sound. For instance, ask the child to change the /b/ sound for /c/, making the word “care”.
