    Picture frames, wall wreaths and refrigerator magnets are afew of the fun and easy items kids

    can make from Play Clay. Use

    the basic shapes or create

    new on es. Once they get started,

    let kids imagination and creative

    talent lead the way!

    P ICTURE FRAMESImagine how proud the kids will

    be making a beautiful frame for

    Grandma and Grandpa! Measure

    and cut a square or oval to

    desired size. Using a plastic

    knife, cut out square fromcenter for photograph. Do not

    make sides too thin (they may

    break). Use another piece of clay for the stand on back.

    Decorate with finger-formed rose buds, add shells or twigs

    for a natural look, or draw designs on with a sharp object.

    When adding decorations, apply them while the clay is still

    damp or glue them on after it is dry.

    M IRROR FRAMEUse the same instructions as for

    the Picture Frame. Glue mirror

    to frame, then add hanger on

    the back.

    W ALL W REATHAdd cookie cutter shapes

    or freeform shapes to a

    ready-made wreath. Add

    ribbon and bows as a finishing

    touch. Consider spray painting the

    wreath before adding decorations for a different look.

    REFRIGERATOR M AGNETHang all your childrens artwork with

    magnets they make themselves. Cut

    shape from rolled-out clay using a

    cookie cutter, pattern or free form.

    Try shapes in the form of fruits,

    Capture the imprint of your childs

    hand (or foot) for a lifetime of memories. Simply place

    hand or foot into clay while it is still damp. Write the name of

    your child, and the date. When dry, paint, then finish with a clear

    acrylic spray. Glue hanger to back.

    rectangular piece of Play Clay while

    still wet. When dry, paint, then

    finish with a clear acrylic spray.

    H OT PLATEFor a neat gift, have kids cut out

    a square of rolled-out clay and

    paint or decorate. Be sure to

    finish these items with a clear spray.

    Display on a table or shelf or hang on

    the wall. Its a good idea to glue felt on the bottom of any itemthat will sit on a table to prevent scratches.

    COASTER ORPAPERWEIGHTForm a circle about 1/2

    thick and 2 in diameter for

    paperweight, 3 diameter for coaster.

    Use a coin, metal button or wooden blocks

    to make an imprint on the surface. Decorate

    with dried flowers, shells, paint, glitter or anything

    your kids imagine.

    Holidays are a great time for kids tomake special ornaments, table

    decorations or gifts for their friends,

    family and teachers. Here are some

    ideas to get them started.

    CHRISTMAS Kids create Christmasmemories with Play Clay!

    Ornaments: Let your kids decorateyour Christmas Tree! Using cookie

    cutters, make Reindeer, Snowmen,

    Gingerbread Men and more. While still

    wet, make a hole at top of ornament

    with a toothpick. When dry, paint

    ornament or glue on decorations. Addwire, ribbon or string to hang. For a

    Christmas to remember, write your

    childs name and the year on the back

    of the ornament!

    Candy Canes: Play Clay candycanes are great gifts for teachers. Make

    two batches of Play Clay, using food dye

    to color one batch red. Roll each batch

    of clay out into long, snake-like lengths.

    Twist one red and one white piece of equal

    length together while still damp. Bend into

    candy cane shape. Make a hole at the top

    to use it as an ornament.

    THANKSGIVING Kids canmake place holders for the holiday table!

    Use cookie cutters to create turkeys, Pilgrims, pumpkins and

    leaf shapes, or use a pattern of your own. While still wet,

    write each guests name

    into clay (or cut a large

    hole in center of clay

    designs and use as

    napkin holders). Let

    kids decorate with paints

    and natural materials.

    H ALLOW EEN Let imaginationsreally go! Ghosts, witches, goblins, black

    cats, bats, skeletons, pumpkins ... Kids

    can make shapes, then paint them for

    decorations or jewelry.

    EASTERDecorate Easter baskets with shapes made

    from Play Clay. Use cookie cutters or patterns

    to form eggs, bunnies, ducks and chicks. To

    decorate, use jelly beans or hard candy.

    VALENTINES DAYMake heart shapes with a cookie cutter

    and use for pins, earrings or necklaces.

    For a sweet gift, hang a heart shape on

    a cord to make a pendant necklace.

    M OTHERS D AYSprings here! Let kids make Mom a smallflower pot. Use the instructions for making a

    box. Place a small plant inside. Make sure the

    inside of the pot is water-proofed by using shellac

    or other finish. Use a plastic bag as a liner.

    FATHERS D AYFor Dad, kids can make

    a frame, paperweight or plaque.

    Another great gift would be bookends.

    Let them be creative when thinking of

    shapes and items to make. Consider

    Dads hobbies or favorite sports.

    JULY 4TH

    Kids can celebrate the countrys

    independence by creating stars

    and flags. Decorate with paint,

    glitter and sequins.

    EARTH DAY Teach kids thevalue of caring for the environment!

    Use round cookie cutters to cut out

    circles. Paint them to look like

    the earth. Use as decorations,

    magnets, paperweights, coasters

    or pins.

    With a few simple shapes, kids can formPlay Clay into a world of imaginative gifts

    and decorations. For most shapes, simply place Play Clay

    between two sheets of waxed paper and roll

    out to 1/4 thickness using a rolling

    pin. Shapes can be m ade thicker,

    but remember that they will need

    more drying time.

    COOKIE CUTTERS Kids can use cookiecutters to shape Play Clay. Simply roll out clay

    and cut shapes. If clay sticks to cutters, use

    MAZOLA No StickTM cooking spray.

    P ATTERNS To construct a Play Claypattern, use cardboard to trace arounda shape or picture from a magazine

    or book. Cut out cardboard tracing,

    then place pattern on rolled-out Play

    Clay. Using a plastic knife, with adult

    supervision, carefully cut around pattern.

    B OXES Design boxes from rolled-out PlayClay, making four sides and a bottom. Put together

    when clay is wet. Make lid separately. For round

    box, cut rolled-out clay into strip and place around

    11/2 circle. Make another circle for lid.

    BEADSTo make beads, form oval

    or round Play Clay shapes between your

    fingers. While damp, push a

    toothpick through the bead,

    turning slightly to make a hole for stringing. For larger holes

    use a small straw.

    FREE FORM Kids dont need a patternto make a design. They can mold

    Play Clay by hand into any shape

    they want. Let their imagination

    HowTo Make

    PLAY CLAY RECIPE1 One Pound Box ARM & HAMMER Baking

    Soda (2 Cups)

    1 Cup ARGO or KINGSFORDS Corn Starch

    11/4 Cups Cold Water (add food coloring to color clay)

    STIRtogether baking soda and cornstarch in saucepan. Add water andCOOK*

    over medium heat, stirring constantly,

    until m ixture reaches consistency of

    moist mashed potatoes (approximately

    10-15 minutes). If clay is cooked too

    long, finished crafts may crack.

    REMOVEmixture to plate and cover with damp cloth.When Play Clay is cool enough to handle,PATuntilsmoot h. Now youre ready to make fun shapes!

    * In cooking, cutting and baking Play Clay, adults should assist

    young children.

    AI R Place finished, decorated objects onwire rack. Dry overnight (8 hours).

    OVEN Pre-heat oven to 350o F. Turn ovenoff, then place finished, decorated objects ona cookie sheet in oven until oven is cold.

    MICROWAVE Place finished, decorated objects on papertowel. Bake at medium power for 30 seconds; turn craftsover and bake for 30 seconds more. Repeat until Play Clayis completely dry. Let cool before handling.

    COLORED CLAY When mixing clay, substitute food colorfor some of the water to create fun and festive colors.

    PAINT Paint dry pieces with water color,poster or acrylic paints. Apply glitter towet paint. Use felt-tip pen or waterproof

    marker for drawing and glue to apply details.

    DECORATIVE ELEMENTS Many objects found around thehouse and yard will help create unique Play Clay crafts.Use buttons or coins to imprint a pattern on a craft. Oraccent a design with beads, macaroni, leaves, shells orbark. Either place the decorations on Play Clay while itswet, or apply with glue to dried craft.

    FIN ISH ING Protect finished Play Clay objects with clearacrylic spray or clear nail polish.

    LEFTOVERS You can store any unused Play Clay for up toa week. Simply place in a tightly sealed plastic bag orcontainer and refrigerate. Do not freeze. Bringto room temperature before using.
