KEYNOTE PRESENTERS
JUDY HARRIS HELM, Ed.D.- EDUCATOR AND AUTHOR - FRIDAY KEYNOTE
Judy Harris Helm, EdD, helps teachers of preschool through 3rd grade to integrate
research into their curricula through her consulting company, Best Practices Inc. She is
a national and international speaker and trainer on project work, engaged learning,
documentation, and school design. Dr. Helm served as the educational planner for three
early childhood centers and two birth–8th grade community schools. Included in the
seven books she has authored or co-authored are Young Investigators: The Project
Approach in the Early Years; The Power of Projects; Teaching Your Child to Love
Learning: A Guide to Projects at Home; Windows on Learning: Documenting Young
Children’s Work; and Teaching Parents to Do Projects at Home.
Friday Keynote- “What? Are You Saying We Can Shape Our Kids’ Brains? And Even Ours?” Sit back and be astounded by what we now know about intellectual development from the latest
neuroscience research. You can create Child Intellect!! By managing social interactions, having stimulating
conversations, asking thought provoking questions, you are building a foundation for school achievement.
Children are building their capacity to think and you are a large part of that building process. Come, see,
learn how to do it better!
Friday Featured Breakout Session- “Myths, Truths and Wake-up Calls”
Work through a self-assessment and see how you are doing in your support of children’s brains. This is a
fun interactive experience in which you will see examples of those things we do every day because we
always did it that way and how you can easily change these to impact their memory and thinking… and
also yours!! We can all use more brain power!
JIM GILL - MUSICIAN AND AUTHOR- SATURDAY KEYNOTE
Jim Gill is a musician and author with singular credentials among children’s artists. Jim spent twenty years directing programs in music play for families with children with special needs in the Chicago area. His particular writing style—combining word play and movement opportunities into songs—was developed through this work. Jim completed his graduate studies in child development at the Erikson Institute of Chicago with a special emphasis on the study of play. His work experience and studies have led Jim to create each of his recordings and books as an opportunity for playful interactions between a child and a caring adult. Jim has released ten award-winning CDs of music play for young children that are favorites in family rooms, classrooms and playrooms. Jim is also the author of two children’s books. Over the years he has received five awards from the American Library Association for his releases.
Jim has shared his expertise and ideas on music, play and literacy with organizations such as Head Start, The National Association for the Education of Young Children, The National Association for Family Child Care and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.
Saturday Keynote- "Music Play with Purpose”
Jim Gill explains the purpose behind his play. Active music play provides a context for children to develop
abilities, such as self-regulation, essential to school success. Jim’s clever word play and rhymes in the
context of active movement games also provide broad opportunities for literacy development.
Educators, care providers and librarians leave each session with a repertoire of music play activities that
can be put to immediate —and purposeful— use in their program. Best of all, they leave the session
understanding that play is a teaching tool that inspires, in children, agility in thought and a love of
learning.
Saturday Featured Breakout Session- “Inspiring Music Play with Infants and Toddlers”
Jim Gill leads a session filled with ideas in music play created especially for professionals working with the
youngest children - those from birth to three years of age. The workshop will explore different ways to use
music to connect with infants and toddlers in various settings: one-on–one experiences, home visits, and
group environments and as a means to smooth stressful transition times. Jim will also lead everyone to
explore what we can do with the youngest children in our care to begin music play, book play and literacy.
