Our Offense
• Run Game: Zone Schemes & Gap Schemes• Drop Back: 5 Concepts• Screen & Draw Package• Packaged Plays• Play Action: Built off of every run concept and
integrated with pass concepts
Evolution of our Pistol Set• At the end of the 2009 season, we started aligning in the pistol and bouncing our
back to his alignment next to the quarterback right before the snap• In the spring of 2010, implemented all of our run game from the pistol set.
– We adjusted our footwork to be able to run our zone read with the back starting in his pistol alignment.
– In addition, we focused on more of a power running game and began implementing tight ends and h-backs into our offense.
– Our quarterback was more of a pro style quarterback, but we still liked the vision of the defense that the shotgun gave him, and the downhill run game fit our personnel well.
• We weren’t pleased with our play action initially. The sell of the run just wasn’t as good from the pistol as it was under center. Furthermore, we felt that in opening and handing it to the running back on our power play, we were forcing him away from his aim point in the “A” gap and not allowing him vision of the guard pulling around.
• 2011 Season – began reversing out on Power play• Spring 2012 – went to a reverse out on all runs
3 Keys to Successful Naked
1. Full run blocking. We do not carry a “naked” protection.
2. Wham or Pin on the backside edge.3. Reverse out and proper run game mechanics
by the quarterback and running back.
3 Keys give us a clean edge and a better run sell
TE running past LB
Key #1 – Full Run Blocking• In 2012 we ran Naked off of:
– Power– Counter– Inside Zone– Outside Zone– Sweep(All of the runs we use)
• The offensive line blocks the run, but doesn’t go down field. (in 2 years we’ve had one call for illegal man down field because OL drove the defender 5 yards). Un-engaged lineman settle and look to help after initial footwork.
Question: Does Backside Tackle have an assignment adjustment?
• BST reads the triangle pre snap for any indicator that the DE will be coming inside into the B-Gap and he collects him like he would on a run. (All runs have default gap responsibility rule).
Key #2 – Wham or Pin the Backside
• Player assigned to handle the backside edge.– Wham-come from the backfield and try to get
wrong-armed.
WHAM
Key #2 – Wham or Pin the Backside
• Player assigned to handle the backside edge.– Wham-come from the backfield and try to get
wrong-armed. – Pin, from the same side, block down on an inside
technique and then get into your route.
PIN
Key #2 – Wham or Pin the Backside
• Player assigned to handle the backside edge.– Wham-come from the backfield and try to get
wrong-armed. – Pin, from the same side, block down on an inside
technique and then get into your route.– If he works up field into naked path stay on him
and lose your block.
Defender up field=lose route
Key #2 – Wham or Pin the Backside
• Player assigned to handle the backside edge.– Wham-come from the backfield and try to get
wrong-armed. – Pin, from the same side, block down on an inside
technique and then get into your route.– If he works up field into naked path stay on him
and lose your block.– If you were wrong, keep going and look for ball.
Key #3 – Reverse out & proper execution of Run Game Mechanics
• QB – reverse out while putting ball to opposite hip flexor
Ball to Opposite Hip Flexor
Key #3 – Reverse out & proper execution of Run Game Mechanics
• QB – reverse out while putting ball to opposite hip flexor
• Snap eyes and show empty hand • QB carry the fake 2 steps vertically• RB “rock the baby” and make a move to get
tackled.
Play Calling – “Naked”
• “Naked” tells those involved in the blocking scheme to block the run aggressively with their run assignments with slight adjustments to not go downfield. In Naked the QB will execute the same mechanics as the run and keep the ball while attacking the edge opposite the run call.
– Example: Rip4 V-Oz Rt Split Naked Left
