Free trade in steel is becoming less free. As steel imports have increased in recent years, so have attempts to limit

free trade and demonize imports. The Wall Street Journal noted in May 2014 that, “U.S. steel imports are approaching record levels, sparking the highest

number of trade complaints in more than a decade and igniting calls for new import tariffs.” And a deeply flawed May 2014 report from the Economic Policy

Institute made the specious claim that, “Surging steel imports put up to half a million U.S. jobs at risk.”

Unfortunately, some lawmakers are also blaming imports for the problems of the domestic steel industry and are backing growth-killing limits on trade.

“The domestic rebar industry should be benefitting from the modest recovery in construction demand in the wake of the recession. Instead, the industry has faced a continuous onslaught of unfairly traded imports which

has had a negative impact on rebar producers and their families.”– Sept. 15, 2014, letter from U.S. Senators to the International Trade Commission Chairman

“By some measures imported OCTG products account for more than 50 percent of the pipes being used by companies drilling for gas and oil in the U.S. One steel company has already reduced hours at three American facilities and idled

another as a result of growing OCTG imports. We have been told that more reductions and layoffs could occur.”– May 15, 2014, letter from U.S. Senators to the Secretary of Commerce

AIIS is committed to being an effective, positive voice for free trade. The American Institute for International Steel is the only steel-related trade association that supports free trade. For more than 65 years, it has:

worked against legislative and regulatory attempts to impose unjust restrictions on steel imports

worked to educate government officials and the public about the benefits of free trade

worked to ensure that the media have the facts about how protectionist policies harm the U.S. economy

“Trade is about how ideas, innovation, inputs and people are all connected in global production, supply and logistics networks. This is particularly true in the steel industry, where lower-cost, high-quality foreign inputs are often used in domestic U.S. production. The availability of lower-cost inputs creates more choices for consumers of steel products, thus contributing to increased consumption, more economic activity and more jobs.”– Jan. 16, 2015, Wall Street Journal letter to the editor from

AIIS Executive Director Richard Chriss

When you join the AIIS, you are investing in your company by helping to make the leading steel industry voice for free trade even stronger.

AIIS MembershipAIIS invites companies and institutions that support the free trade of steel to join the association. Member benefits include:

Advocacy and public relations support on steel trade issues that affect membersInformation about trade cases that could have an impact on members’ businessesTimely data on dumping and countervailing duty ratesAccess to import and export data for all major steel products, including U.S. domestic steel shipment dataOpportunities to attend premier networking events at discounted rates, such as the AIIS Annual DinnerInvitations to exclusive events with government officials and policymakersAnd much more

Free trade is under attack, and if opponents have their way, steel from outside the United States will effectively be stripped of its ability to compete on price. AIIS has taken up this challenge, but

we can’t succeed without you.
