Going 3D with CityEngineEsriEric Wittner

Procedural generating 3D content allows you to get the most out of your GIS data by leveraging both the feature’s geometry and its attributes. Simple procedures include extruding building footprints by a ‘Height’ attribute, rotating a park bench by a ‘Rotation’ attribute, and resizing a threat dome sphere by a ‘Distance’ attribute. Complex procedures are available through CityEngine, where you can write a procedural rule that can, for example, convert a building footprint into a 17th century Parisian building, or convert a land-use polygon into the maximum structure that would still conform to the city’s zoning laws. At 10.2, the CityEngine capabilities can be accessed directly from ArcGIS through a new geoprocessing tool, making procedurally generated 3D content readily available for all ArcGIS 3D Analyst users.

Harnessing GIS for Sustainable Island Management in Guimaras, PhilippinesProvincial Road ManagementEvan Anthony Arias

The Province of Guimaras is confronted with the challenge of pursuing economic development, but at the same time maintaining ecological balance to ensure the sustainability of its fragile small island ecosystem. The provincial

government was faced with the critical need for informed decision-making to craft a plan that would effectively maximize the island’s potential for agriculture, fisheries and tourism without sacrificing environmental sustainability, while also addressing the emerging threats brought about by climate change. A land use planning process was undertaken which harnessed the capabilities of ArcGIS in performing spatial analysis to create thematic maps produced from overlaying various data with the existing land use. The process enabled a sieve mapping analysis for evaluating development options that eventually resulted in the crafting of land use strategies that addressed the constraints brought about by lack of public lands, limited land area, conflicting land uses and presence of environmentally critical areas.

Quantifying Benefits of Green InfrastructureCDM SmithPriyanka Mehta

Cities around the world are striving for a sustainable environment with city officials making capital expenditure decisions to improve quality of life, environment and infrastructure. This has greatly increased the need for an integrated solution for sustainable infrastructure and even more the need to quantify the benefits of green infrastructure.

To help quantify the sustainability performance of alternative urban designs and the application of green technologies, CDM Smith’s Neysadurai Center for Integrated Urban Solutions has developed a set of tools that simulate urban designs and provide quantitative information about sustainability performance. This set of tools is known as Urban System Model (USM) which includes different technological concepts like GIS, System Dynamics, Database Management and Data Analytics. The main objective of the model is to provide output that matches established criteria for decision

making relating to planning, design, urban management and other technologies that are involved in this decision making process.

The USM helps measure the benefits of green infrastructure, which not only addresses the traditional issues of storm water management and water quality but also considers other aspects like aesthetics, livability, reducing urban heat island etc. GIS based spatially distributed information is fed to the database as one of the initial inputs in USM. From here the data is consumed by dynamics simulated model. The outputs from USM are highly varied and scalable. For example, it can help quantifying performances of various sectors like energy, water, transportation etc. GIS environment gives an added advantage for visualizing and interpreting outputs spatially.

Developing ArcGIS based Systems for High Impact Weather ResearchGangneung-Wonju National UniversityChul Sohn

The High Impact Weather Research Center of Korea, the National Institute of Meteorological Research and GIS Education Center of Gangneung-Wonju National University are cooperating closely to develop an ArcGIS 10 based system which can manage rich historical weather and disaster related data and the outputs from numerical

weather forecasting models such as KLAPS (Korea Local Analysis and Prediction System) to investigate the role of extreme weather conditions in the occurrence of natural disasters in Korea. The prototype of this system has several functions such as converting outputs from numerical weather models to GIS usable vector and raster data, querying time and location of specific extreme weather patterns, and automatically integrating weather data and disaster data in one shapefile format. In this presentation, the introduction to the prototype system will be given with real extreme weather and related disaster examples to show how this system can be used to investigate effectively the relationship between two highly correlated phenomena.

Quantifying Effects of Urban Heat Island using GISCDM SmithPriyanka Mehta

With the ever growing increase of urbanization and industrialization, the study of Urban Heat Island (UHI) and methods of reducing it are becoming of prime importance. Singapore being a low latitude lying country, the effect of UHI increases the energy consumption for cooling effects on daily basis for residential, commercial and several other land uses. There have been studies done in Singapore explaining the effect of land use on UHI. According to literature review, the heat that is absorbed during the day by the buildings, roads and other constructions in an urban area is reemitted after sunset, creating high temperature differences between urban and rural areas. This effect creates a typical temporal variation of urban and rural environments. This session discusses methods of quantifying effects of Urban Heat Island using Geographical Information System (GIS) and shows quantitative reduction in UHI effect when green infrastructure is added to the landscape.

Geospatial Data Complexity in AirportsFederal Aviation AdministrationShyam Parhi

Airports GIS is a web portal which hosts a few applications. They can be broadly categorized as survey, electronic Airport Layout Plan (eALP), and Modification to Standard (MOS). Airports GIS allows authorized users to submit airport survey data. The main purpose of building an eALP or MOS is to move from paper to digital form. All these modules are in various phases of development at present.

The development of this enterprise GIS system involves lots of challenges. Data complexity arising while trying to integrate different GIS databases and application based coordination and review processes brings significant complexity to the development of these applications. For example, MOS users should be able to go to a specific runway or taxiway and determine if any modification to standard is needed. We use ArcGIS viewer capability to display these essential features. This is especially important in eALP. A planner needs to measure the distance from runway centerline to taxiway centerline or make some pen and ink changes in an eALP, and coordinate with other planners. ArcGIS is very much suitable for this kind of need. We are working with version control of these eALPs with all geospatial features intact keeping in mind future geospatial planned data. For survey module, the validation and verification of GIS features, both safety and non-safety critical, is essential and is a significant activity in Airports GIS. Airports GIS data collection has played a great role in making it an authoritative source for geospatial Airports data.

Right into the Danger ZoneGeospatial Intelligence Pty LtdRob Coorey

There has been a massive increase in the number of civilians working in unfamiliar, difficult and dangerous locations. Civilians are now involved in peace keeping, natural disaster relief, election monitoring and the like, as well as adventure travel far from home.

The military has significant experience in dealing with these situations, while other employers and civilians are struggling to adequately prepare and equip themselves to remain safe. Consequently, there has been an increase in employers’ duty of care obligations and a burgeoning private security industry.

Until now, little has been done to harness the power of sophisticated web, mobile and spatial technologies to support people operating in locations that put them at significant risk. The GeoInt-SafeNet system and mobile app harnesses the power of ArcGIS GeoEvent Processor, ArcGIS Online, ArcGIS Mobile and MetaCarta search technology together with quality spatial and security information, allowing organisations to take charge of their duty of care around the world.

GeoInt-SafeNet allows users to see their location as well as the location of colleagues on a map. The map provides essential situational awareness information including current, past and potential events, alerts and warnings surrounding the location. Users, both in the field and the control room, are able to share information and warnings about what is occurring nearby as well as navigation instructions to move to an identified safe place.

Esri Maps for CognosPM Square Pte and IBM SingaporeRobert Edis and Bryan Peng Huan

Esri Maps for IBM Cognos boosts your business intelligence (BI) to new levels. Easily integrate smart maps to your BI applications for more complete and actionable reports. Enable visualisation of your intelligence data and application of location analytics, adding value to the decision-making process.

Visualising your data on a map allows you to see patterns that graphs and charts cannot reveal. A map on your BI report or dashboard compiles a huge amount of information into a dynamic and accessible analysis tool. A map on a BI dashboard works with and compliments other BI objects including charts and tables.

Unlike static maps in BI dashboards or reports you are able to drill down/up through the levels of data, change what information the map displays without impacting the report data, zoom in/out, and filter the data displayed via the dashboard/report controls.

This presentation will show you the steps to include an Esri map and how an Esri map can enhance an existing BI dashboard/report.

National Security User Group EsriBrett Dixon and Craig Pitman

Every nation strives to protect and secure its citizens, natural resources, assets and way of life. From within a nation’s borders the interest is the prevention of incidents and reduction of impacts. At the border, it is understanding immigration, illegal trafficking, and defending against hostile neighbors. Beyond the borders, it is national defence forces helping other countries in responding and recovering from disasters, national health pandemics, and peace keeping. Each mission requires national intelligence for developing plans, assessing vulnerabilities, and responding with current and accurate situational awareness.

The National Security User Group will include presentations and demonstrations on how the ArcGIS Platform enables organisations to create and share actionable intelligence. It will cover:

• Integration of intelligence and rapid analysis to support multi-agency missions at the local, state and national levels.

• The provision of information and tools to enable all users to conduct their own mission specific analysis and planning.

• Create a complete and comprehensive common operating environment and enhanced situational awareness.

• Public information management and tools to keep citizens informed and aware in times of national crisis.

3D Analyst – Feature and Volumetric AnalysisEsriEric Wittner

High-quality 3D data visualisation is mainstream now. Users expect to see geospatial data in 3D. However, 3D GIS users are now beginning to move beyond just visualization and need to do true 3D analyses, solving problems that can’t be solved in 2D. ArcGIS 3D Analyst offers a range of 3D vector analysis tools enabling users to solve these 3D problems. In this session, we will present these new 3D vector analysis capabilities in the context of real 3D problems. We’ll show how the new GP tools can be used for volumetric shadow analysis, threat dome analysis, creation of cross sections, determination of maximum building heights, and more.

Creation of 3D Buildings and DTM of Singapore Singapore Land AuthorityTong Wee Aw

Geographic Information System (GIS) technology is not new in Singapore. There is a considerable amount of spatial data owned by the government and private sectors. However, most of the data is represented only in 2D today, meaning some of the data loses the ability to be harvested for greater use.

There is an increased demand for accurate and authoritative 3D mapping data and information. The needs include development planning, environmental monitoring and studies, climate change studies and biodiversity studies.

More precise and accurate ground surface is also needed to better represent the ground on which the 3D data would sit. Under these considerations as the main thrusts, two components are created. 1) The Digital Terrain Model (DTM) and 2) 3D Buildings.

The data required for the generation of DTM can be acquired by several techniques, these include airborne LiDAR, aerial photogrammetry, etc. Satellite stereo pairs are used to extract data to build the surface model. Heights of buildings can also be generated to build massing models of buildings for the whole of Singapore. Esri programmes help us in the processing of the extracted data to build, analyse and view the products.

The Marriage Between Point Cloud and GISSingapore Land AuthorityZhen Hao Ng

With the emergence of 3D applications, point cloud datasets – which capture 3D information – have been significantly important in supporting 3D Geographic Information Systems (3D GIS) as a 3D data source. Most of the GIS systems, such as Esri’s ArcGIS and Bentley Map are now capable of handling point clouds directly, and integrate them with other geospatial data to conduct analysis, management, visualization and dissemination.

In this presentation, we will demonstrate an example of the integration of point clouds and GIS on encroachment survey, which is one of the core operations in the Land Survey Division of Singapore Land Authority (SLA). This example will utilize point clouds dataset as the data source while GIS will allow for better visualization, for defining and understanding of encroachment.

Although point cloud data is now getting denser with more powerful sensors coming up, the computer hardware and software are the limiting factors in handling huge point cloud data in GIS. Going forward, software vendors in particular have to take the challenge to develop new ways of handling the data regardless of size. In addition, the capability of 3D GIS analysis is also required in visualizing, managing, automated feature extracting and seamlessly fusing various data sources to create a single integrated environment.

Maps and the Geospatial Revolution: Teaching a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) on CartographyThe Pennsylvania State UniversityAnthony C. Robinson

Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) are a growing trend in distance education. MOOCs are designed to engage tens of thousands of students around the world in online class experiences that are available for free. Therefore, MOOCs provide a new form of access to higher education, and they challenge traditional models for university learning which emphasize high levels of one-on-one contact between instructors and students. In this talk I describe experiences and lessons learned from designing, developing, and teaching the first MOOC on Mapping. The course, called Maps and the Geospatial Revolution, was offered through Coursera, a popular platform for delivering MOOCs. More than 48,000 students from around the world enrolled in the first offering of the class, signaling a massive demand for basic cartographic education.

This talk will highlight a wide range of challenges and opportunities around MOOCs for Geography. Among many possible impacts, research on map use and design, as well as education and outreach to improve exposure to our discipline are poised to benefit from engagement with global student populations in MOOCs.

GeoTouch by EOSEarth Observatory of SingaporeHumza Akhtar

The GeoTouch Project was launched in 2008, the main purpose of the project being to build a multi-touch system for education, collaboration, public dissemination and discussion within Earth Observatory of Singapore (EOS) for Geologists and Earth Scientists. As the scientists required a means of accessing accurate data quickly in a showcase location for dignitaries, press and other visitors, GeoTouch emerged as a useful tool to visualise GIS content on a large multi-touch screen. The software uses Microsoft Surface APIs, and combined with Esri ArcGIS WPF SDK provides an awesome learning and interactive environment for GIS related work.

There are some companies that are making multi-touch GIS related apps for iPads, for example GIS Pro By Garafa LLC, but specifically for large scale touch screens, currently no other commercial software exists which combines all the useful features from Surface profiling to importing layers into one single user interface design. It works well as an education tool and as a ‘high-technology’ draw to attract attention to the research centre, and extremely well as a tool to interact with visiting media representatives. It also provides good access to the static data sets/map layers uploaded on to the device. This technology can be used by field engineers and students alike to understand the wonders hidden in our beautiful planet.

Increase Productivity Using ENVI Image Analytics in the ArcGIS EcosystemEsri Australia and ExelisGordon Sumerling and Cherie Muleh

Imagery is an important source of information for any GIS system. Often, imagery may just be referenced as a backdrop to other analysis. However, imagery can also provide a wealth of knowledge beyond the visual backdrop. ENVI is designed to exploit this knowledge and provide information back to the GIS ecosystem. By using the advanced image analysis tools in ENVI, features previously not seen can be extracted from imagery, changes can be detected, and materials identified and characterized, that in the past were just represented visually. The session steps the user through the advanced image analysis methods in ENVI and shows how easily the results can be integrated with ArcGIS.

Information for Location Exchange & Operations Management (GALILEO)Land Transport Authority of SingaporeJonah Ong

Singapore faces increasing population and travel demand, changing demographics and expectations, against a backdrop of limited land space. This challenges the Land Transport Authority (LTA) in integrating land-use and transport planning to create a quality living environment. Building on its extensive digital knowledge of land transport infrastructure, LTA developed a Land Transport GIS Hub for the enterprise, capable of meshing engineering design, operational data and real-time sensors to enable the full lifecycle in our infrastructure development.

From long-term transport planning to the development and management of land transport infrastructure, LTA have benefitted much from geospatial technologies in many areas like road & construction safety, enhancing organisational productivity and proactive maintenance.

With the array of transport information available, LTA aims to place this at the fingertips of commuters and motorists, to empower them to plan their journeys effectively. A smartphone app is also employed to crowd source defects in transport facilities.

Aligning with the government’s drive to promote value creation through government data, LTA rolled out an open data-sharing platform to engage the industry for co-creation of innovative location-based information services.

Mining the vast amount of transport information for an added dimension of business insights, geospatial analytics is utilised to visualise patterns and trends, so as to unveil obscured business values. With better understanding on commuter behaviour across different transport modes, LTA can perform evidence based planning towards further resource optimisation. Collectively,

maps have come alive where the innovative use of GIS technologies has brought LTA closer to the pulse of businesses and the community.

A Query Based Approach to Spatial MetadataMubadala PetroleumJess Kozman

Map users in the exploration departments of oil and gas organisations frequently deal with multiple sources of spatial data. To reduce risk and support mission critical decisions, they must be able to answer five questions about their data; Where, What, When, Who, and Why. A centrally managed GIS architecture provides answers to these queries from a single validated source and delivers business related metadata for geotechnical applications.

Exploration and production spatial data for oil and gas is generally treated by the business as three categories; geological, geophysical and cultural. In the ArcGIS for Server functionality, cultural data which changes only with the legal and regulatory ownership of operating blocks and concessions might be delivered as a cached map service while geological and geophysical data, which can change quickly based on multiple working hypotheses and interpretations, would be a likely candidate for dynamic delivery.

While GIS systems have long been viewed as the repository for the Where and What metadata, workflows and pilot projects for capturing and associating business metadata with geospatial elements now allow for presentation of When (when was the data last updated or worked). The Who and Why in oil and gas are supported by industry standard best practices for data ownership, data governance and knowledge capture, all of which support emerging concepts of Big Data.

Spatial Application Infrastructure: Cross Platform App Management Using ArcGIS OnlineLatitude GeographicsJohn Austin

The bar for web-based GIS and mapping applications has risen dramatically in recent years. End-users recognize the power and efficacy of simple applications that help them get things done easily, versus more complex web GIS applications or traditional mapping portals.

Based on the premise that end-users are more likely to be successful with a simple application, more and more organizations are seeking to leverage the ArcGIS platform to deliver targeted web applications that accomplish particular objectives. These targeted applications make use of simple, uncluttered interfaces based on workflows aligned to business processes already familiar to users.

End-users are looking for applications that are consumable by their device of choice (desktop, tablet and handheld), and administrators are looking to provide these choices without significantly increasing development overhead and ongoing maintenance.

This presentation will introduce the broadly applicable concepts of a Spatial Application Infrastructure (SAI); a technology agnostic approach to building, deploying and maintaining cross-platform mapping applications. Applications built using SAI principles can help meet the specific business requirements of users, while minimizing ongoing maintenance and deployment costs on the administrative side. We will use a case study from an actual implementation to illustrate these concepts in practical terms.
