FENIX: Finding Regional environmental life cycle information on packaging waste management through

flexible software tools and databasesObjectives:

– Developing a flexible and easy-to-use LCA software tool to allow a rigorous and quantified evaluation of the life-cycle environmental performance (also including social and economic aspects) of different scenarios of packaging waste management in Spain and Portugal, both at municipality and regional level.

– Demonstrating the usefulness of LCA to make decisions related to packaging waste management issues.

– Compiling data and creating a specific database on waste management processes for Spain and Portugal (ILCD format).

– Producing results that may be transferred to other European regions. – Sharing knowledge on waste management and LCA among Spanish and Portuguese

institutions (universities, technical institutes, etc.), and facilitating the start-up of an Iberian LCA network of experts on such themes.

Budget: 2.6 millions Euros (approx.)

740.000 Euros subcontracting to 13 research groups

1) Validation of the Software Technical Specifications (three LCA experts)• Review of the Software Technical Specifications• Review of the general model

2) Pilot test of the software: review of the ‘beta’ version• Review by two individual independent LCA experts• Review (on-line) by 15 Spanish and Portuguese municipalities• Review by a Panel, formed by 12 experts in LCA and waste management

3) Critical review of the Life Cycle Inventories • Review of the LCIs by 7 LCA critical review experts

Examples of dissemination activities:• FENIX website www.life-fenix.eu launched

in June 2010 (public and private area) in English, Spanish and Portuguese.

• FENIX: 1st International Conference on Life Cycle Thinking was held at ESCI on September 14th 2010 (+ 200 participants).

Expectations:• The green dot holders have high expectations from the results of this

project, as it will put science and sense to packaging waste management decision making in relation to environmental impacts.

• Polititians from municipalities have well responded to testing the tool but we still have doubts as how they will receive it.

• Scientific community is waiting for the database and the conclusions on the combination of life cycle principles and economic and social aspects.

Results up to now:• Lots of enquieries about the project• A new LCA community in Spain and Portugal• A beta version of the tool to be tested in November• A large number of processes modelled within LCA Software GaBi
