Managing plastic waste is an unmet need

About 200 MMT of plastic landfilledor ending up as litter

Improper waste management leadsto significant

leakage into oceans and seas(~8 MMT per year)

By 2025, the ocean

could contain 1 ton of plastic for every 3 tons of finfish

There is untapped value in post-use plastic that can be

used to incentivize collection and reprocessing

Plastic waste production is expected

to double in the next 15 years

Strategic by combining the expertise of the whole value chain from raw material to manufacturing, to brand/retail, to waste management

Comprehensive by focusing on the entirety of the challenge from waste minimization to post-use solutions

Tangible by delivering on-the-ground projects & investment in infrastructure

Market-oriented by deploying strategies to increase the value of plastic waste streams to support investment

Collaborative by bringing together industry, government, communities & civil society

Solution:A new & different approach

Problem:Current efforts arefragmented

Infrastructure Development to collect and manage plastic waste, and increase recycling in areas of greatest need.

Innovation to advance and bring to scale new technologies that make recycling and recovering plastics easier and create value from all post-use plastics.

Education and Engagement of governments, businesses, and communities to mobilize action.

Clean Up to help stop plastic waste at its source, focusing on cities and major rivers that carry significant amounts of plastic waste to the ocean.

PROJECTS

License to operate• Consistent with Alliances foundational policies

• Ensure compliance with all laws and regulations

Strategic Alignment• Consistent with Alliance mission, promotes highest / best use of plastic

• Cross-value chain; leverages Alliance core capabilities and synergies

Technical Feasibility• Based on sound scientific / technological foundation

• Implementation complexity

Economics• Potential for self-sustaining economics based on market fundamentals

• Attractive ratio of plastic waste diverted per cost of program ($/T)

Plastic Waste Impact• Material and scalable, tons redirected from the environment

• Focus on high leakage markets with applicability to multiple markets

Stakeholder Engagement and Credibility

• Government, key NGOs, communities and consumers

• Builds Alliance credibility

Environmental and Social Impacts

• Enable improvements in other areas (e.g. water, emissions)

• Promotes community benefits (e.g. jobs, living conditions, infrastructure)

Aggregated company-sponsored & directed investments into waste management infrastructure or technologies supportive of the alliance mission.

• The project outcomes must directly align to at least one of the four Alliance pillars (Infrastructure, Innovation, Education and Engagement, or Clean-up)

• The project must be intended to lead to reduction or avoidance of unmanaged and/or mismanaged plastic waste into the environment, prioritizing high-leakage geographies

• The project must have impact beyond improving a Member’s own operations, product, packaging design/optimization, and/or other internal commitments

Project TeamsDeveloping an open source, science-based global information project to support waste management efforts with reliable data collection, metrics and standards to help accelerate the prevention of plastic waste entering the environment.

Partnering with cities to design integrated waste management systems where infrastructure is lacking, especially along rivers which transport vast amounts of plastic waste to the ocean.

Funding to support The Incubator Network by Circulate Capital and SecondMuse to develop and promote technologies and business models that prevent ocean plastic waste and improve waste management and recycling.

Supporting Renew Oceans Renew Ganga project to aid localized investment and engagement, that is designed to capture plastic waste before it reaches the ocean.

Collaborating with intergovernmental organizations such as the United Nations to conduct joint workshops and trainings to help them identify and pursue effective and locally-relevant solutions in the high priority areas.

Scoping WBCSD’s Packaging & Plastics project

1. SELECT: Pick a table based on whether you’re interested in discussing either PACKAGING (all types) or DURABLE PLASTICS

2. LISTEN: What is the barriers in scaling sustainable solutions?

3. PROBLEM STATEMENT: Select a barrier to define a problem statement

4. IDEATE: What are potential solutions to this barrier?

5. ASSESS: Compare each solution against potential impact and WBCSD’s capabilities
