RECYCLING PROGRAM PLASTIC All food & beverage plastic* bottles, jugs, tubs and trays with the numbers 1 through 7 on the bottom, can be recycled. This includes clear plastic “clamshell” containers. *There are exceptions: Please do not include foam plastic packaging (e.g. Styrofoam), plastic bags, plastic wrap (e.g. bubble wrap), and “blisterpak” plastics (e.g. the rigid clear plastic packaging on toys and other products). Clean plastic grocery bags can be taken to the Brantford Food Bank, 1100 Clarence Street South. PAPER Household paper: Includes junk mail, writing and computer paper, flyers & envelopes (with windows removed), paper rolls, paper egg cartons, paper bags. No: tissues, waxed paper or paper towels. Corrugated cardboard: Must be CLEAN and unwaxed. Remove all food residue from pizza boxes. Tie in bundles no larger than 75 cm x 75 cm x 20 cm (30” x 30” x 8”). Newspapers, magazines & telephone directories: Includes catalogues, paperback books and hardcover books with covers removed. *Residents are encouraged to donate books to local charities, such as the annual Brantford Symphony Orchestra book sale. For more information regarding the book sale, contact 519-759-8781. Boxboard boxes: Includes shoe, cereal, tissue and detergent boxes. Remove liners and plastic windows, then flatten. CONTAINERS Cardboard tubes & cans: Frozen juice cans, coffee containers, potato chip containers etc. Food & beverage glass bottles & jars: Rinse and remove lids. Mason jars can be recycled. No: drinking glasses, dishes, cups, crystal, window glass, light bulbs, glass pots & pans, mirrors, pottery or make-up jars. Food & beverage metal cans: Rinse. Put loose lid inside can and pinch closed. No: coat hangers, cooking pots or pans, utensils, batteries. HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS WASTE EVENTS Mohawk Street Landfill Site: 8:00 am - 4:00 pm (Brantford residents only)

Household Hazardous Waste Days provide an opportunity for residents to discard unwanted items such as:

These wastes should not be thrown away with yourregular garbage or poured down the drain where they could damage the environment. WE CANNOT ACCEPT: Industrial, Commercial or Institutional Waste.

Empty metal paint cans lids removed, can go in the blue box.

Fluorescent Tubes/Compact Fluorescent BulbsBring fluorescent tubes (including compact fluorescent bulbs) to Household Waste Events, in a cardboard box or wrap them in newspaper. Do not tape tubes/bulbs together. Limit of 10 tubes/bulbs per vehicle, per event day.

Bring us your tiresAll tires, on or off the rim, are now accepted.

Electronic Equipment Bring your tired electronic equipment to the Household Hazardous Waste Days.

Acceptable items include: Monitors, TVs, computers & related components, telephones, electronic calculators, photocopiers, fax machines, VCRs, DVD players, and cameras.

Unacceptable items include: Power tools, appliances, microwaves, electric motors, air conditioners, water coolers, dehumidifiers, white goods (refrigerators, freezers), etc.

BULK PICK-UP Two ways to schedule a bulk material pick-up:

Bulk materials are collected separately at curbside, twice per year, once January - June and once July - December. Residents are required to call or go online and give 7 calendar days notice to receive the service. Collection occurs on regular garbage day. Have bulk materials out by 7:00 am on the morning of collection.

For a detailed listing of items accepted for the Bulk Pick-up program and how to properly prepare them for pick-up, please visit our website brantford.ca/environmental (listed under “Waste Programs”) *Residents are encouraged to contact local charities for donation of reusable or gently used items.

GARBAGE COLLECTION A maximum of five containers or bags per household will be collected each week. Each container must weigh less than 25 kg (55 lbs). Be sure to have garbage to the curb by 7:00 am, but not before 7:00 pm the night before.

FREE COMPOST AT MOHAWK STREET LANDFILL SITE Starting May 7: Free compost while quantities last, Mohawk Street Landfill, Monday to Saturday, 8:00 am to 4:00 pm. Bag-your-own! Bring a shovel & containers, limit 2 bags per day.

BACKYARD COMPOSTERS Backyard composters are available at the Mohawk Street Landfill Site, Monday to Saturday, 8:00 am - 5:00 pm. Cost is $20 per unit and available to Brantford residents only.

MOHAWK STREET LANDFILL SITE Monday to Saturday: 8:00 am - 5:00 pm Closed Sundays, Christmas Day & New Year’s Day General Waste Tipping Fee Rate=$71.00/metric tonne. All loads 150 kg (330 lbs.) or less are $10.00 each landfill visit, no limit to the number of visits per year. Any loads over 150 kg or beyond the small load exemption are charged the applicable tipping fee rate. Please note electronics and tires are always accepted at the landfill site. Tires on the rim are $5 each, off the rim, no cost. Electronics are no charge.

YARD WASTE COLLECTION Spring/Summer: April 2 - September 28 Max 10 bags/containers of yard waste per week beyond the 5 bag weekly garbage limit

Fall: October 1 - November 30 Max 30 bags/containers of yard waste per week beyond the 5 bag weekly garbage limit

Place all grass clippings, leaves, weeds and plants out for collection in kraft paper bags or open, rigid-walled containers. Yard waste in plastic bags will not be collected.

Place kraft paper bags or containers out at curbside on regularly scheduled collection day with garbage and blue box materials. Yard waste materials are not to be raked to the curb. Be sure to place yard waste materials in front of your own property.

Bundled brush is also accepted with the yard waste program. Please prepare bundles no larger than 1.2m (4 feet) in length and 0.9m (3 feet) in diameter. All branches must be less then 0.1m (4 inches) in diameter. Please note: One bundle of brush counts as one bag of yard waste.

Christmas Tree: January 7 - 18, 2019 Place Christmas tree at curbside before 7:00 am on regular garbage collection day. Remove ornaments, tinsel, tree stands and plastic bags from Christmas trees.
