Surgical Registrar Training Program

Candidates must have completed a minimum of five years of College accredited surgical training and

are required to be surgically competent prior to entry to the College Surgical Registrar Training

Program. Candidates must be registered with the Medical Board of Australia.

The Surgical Program

The ACCS registrar training program provides two years of advanced training in cosmetic surgery. It

has a number of consistent parts:

• (i) 24 months – Australian rotation

• (ii) The production of a clinical research paper or review article for publication

• (iii) College academic syllabus

• (iv) College Fellowship examinations: written and oral components

• (v) Surgical log book

• (vi) Registrar evaluation reports

Australian Rotation The Australian component comprises rotations based in NSW, VIC, SA and QLD.

Rotations consists of a minimum of 3 months duration and involves attachment to at least four cosmetic surgeons who are responsible for the registrar's clinical training.

Registrars are required to complete a minimum of:

• (i) 25 hours clinical attendance each week (eg. operating sessions, pre-op and post-op clinics) which are registered in their clinical log book (minimum 1100 hours per year).

• (ii) 10 hours of academic time (the time estimated to complete the academic syllabus).

• (iii) Attendance at a minimum of 6 major procedures per week (minimum of 250 per year) recorded in their surgical log book.

• Registrars are also responsible for running the Journal Club which is part of the College CME program.

Examinations • Written and Viva Voce as determined by the College from time to time.

All references to "College" indicate the Australasian College of Cosmetic Surgery

Fees Two Year Surgical Registrar Training - $30,000 + GST, payable before commencement of training.

Medical Registrar Training Program The trainee must be at least 5 years post graduate and a fully registered practising medical practitioner. The trainee must have attained either FRACGP or VR status, or, 3 years dermatology training, Diploma of Practical Dermatology (Wales), other diplomas etc relating to skin cancer or skin disease as deemed appropriate by the College.

The Medical Program

The ACCS registrar training program provides for eighteen months of advanced training in cosmetic medicine with an option for a further six months training in Lipoplasty. It has a number of consistent parts:

• (i) 18 months – Australian rotation through Accredited Australian Practices Optional Overseas training in ACCS, European or USA accredited training posts, up to a duration of 6 months

• (ii) The production of a clinical research paper or review article for publication each year

• (iii) College academic syllabus

• (iv) Attendance at College accredited Workshops as may be determined

• (v) College Fellowship examinations: written and oral components

• (vi) Log books of procedures

• (vii) Registrar evaluation reports

Australian Rotation The Australian component comprises rotations based in all capital cities and some rural.

The rotation consists of a minimum of 3 months and involves attachment to at least 4 preceptors who are responsible for the registrar's clinical training.

Registrars are required to complete a minimum of:

• (i) 20 hours clinical attendance each week which are registered in their clinical log book (minimum 1100 hours per year).

• (ii) 10 hours of academic time each week (the time estimated to complete the academic syllabus).

• (iii) Maintenance of a log book and minimum procedures to be announced.

• Registrars are also responsible for running the Journal Club which is part of the College CME program.

Overseas Training

Consists of either:

• ACCS / American Academy of Joint Fellowship

• ACCS / European Academy of Joint Fellowship

• ACCS Approved Training Positions

Examinations

• Written and oral yearly examination.

• Final oral and written examination.

Fees

18 Months Medical Registrar Training Program - $20,000 + GST payable before commencement of training.

Medical Training with optional further 6 months of Lipoplasty training - $30,000 + GST

Diploma of Cosmetic Medicine

Application – entry criteria

Candidates are selected as a result of an application process. Candidates must be registered as medical practitioners in their country of residence and undergraduate qualifications must be deemed appropriate by ACCS. Candidates must have a minimum of three years experience as a medical practitioner post graduation.

Course Requirements This programme comprises compulsory workshops, attendance at accredited conferences and meetings, ongoing mentorship, private study, completion of set exercises, maintenance of log books of practice activity and participation in an approved body of research. The research project must be submitted to ACCS for acceptance prior to commencement and approval of ACCS must be obtained. The course requirements can be achieved over two years. Any extension of time will only be granted in exceptional circumstances as approved by the ACCS Council.

Attendance

Each participant must accumulate 50 points of attendance at the rate of one point per hour. Attendance points will apply only to scheduled workshops as detailed by ACCS or other conferences by approval of ACCS. Validation of effective participation in these meetings will be required.

Course Work Throughout the course exercises or assignments will be set requiring completion in a specified time frame. Successful completion of six such exercises will be required to complete this element.

Accredited conferences for this course are; • Australasian College of Cosmetic Surgery Annual meeting • American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery Annual Meeting • International Master Course on Ageing Skin Annual Meeting • International Society of Laser Cosmetic Surgery Annual Meeting • Others by application and approval • One of the above must be attended during the course of the Diploma in addition to the

attendance points as detailed above.

Each candidate will be assigned a mentor for the duration of the course who will be available to provide assistance and advice as required.

Research / Presentation

One piece of research accepted for publication in a peer reviewed journal must be produced. The research must be substantially the work of the candidate although the ultimate work may be collaboration. A literature review of an approved topic may be accepted.

Examination Candidates who successfully complete all other elements will be invited to sit the final examination. The examination will consist of a Written MCQ type examination, practical examination and a viva voce examination. Successful completion of all elements will result in the awarding of the Diploma of Cosmetic Medicine.

CME Maintenance of the Diploma will require adherence to and completion of the College CME and Recertification Programme and observance of College Constitution and By-Laws as amended from time to time, and maintenance of at least Affiliates status with the College. Diplomats will agree to be bound by the ACCS Constitution and By Laws.

Diploma of Cosmetic Nursing An educational initiative of the Australasian College of Cosmetic Surgery designed for nurses working to enhance their skills specifically for cosmetic nursing, which is available for registered nurses and enrolled nurses.

The aim of this course is to develop and refine awareness of the particular requirements of cosmetic surgery and medicine as it relates to nursing. The course should enable a nurse to practice in the area of cosmetic nursing with more understanding and appreciation of the requirements. It should also give nurses the requisite knowledge and understanding to counsel potential patients and impart a proper understanding of procedures and realistic expectations of outcomes.

A nursing background of at least five years as a registered nurse is a prerequisite and eight years as an enrolled nurse. A letter of recommendation from a cosmetic practitioner will be considered highly in assessing the suitability of candidates.

Positions are limited and will be awarded on the merits of the applicants. Application forms should be accompanied by a covering letter, a full CV and recent work history and preferably be accompanied by a letter of recommendation from a doctor working in the field of cosmetic medicine or cosmetic surgery.

CME The ACCS Diploma of Cosmetic Nursing requires adherence to a CME program to maintain this qualification. A total of 100 CME points are to be accumulated over a three year period. Allowable elements; • Attendance at approved clinical or training workshops 10 points per clinic • Approved Seminars 10 points per day • Trainer/Presenter at workshops 10 points per w/shop • Presentation of an original paper or research at an approved 10 points meeting • Maintenance of clinic log book 10 points Recertification and CME must be completed every three years. Administration fee for this process is $300.

Cost

• $3000.00 for an RN with 5 years post-graduate experience (8 years for an enrolled nurse) but no exposure to

cosmetic medicine/surgery. • $2200.00 for those applicants who have been employed in the industry as a Contractor or Employee with a

minimum of 12 months experience in cosmetic medicine/surgery. • $1800.00 A further discount is offered to RN’s who are employed or contracted to an ACCS Fellow for a

minimum of 12 months.

Diploma in Cosmetic Injectables

Application – Entry Criteria

Candidates are selected as a result of an application process. Candidates must be registered as medical practitioners in their country of residence and undergraduate qualifications must be deemed appropriate by ACCS. Candidates must have a minimum of three years experience as a medical practitioner post graduation.

Course Requirements

This program comprises compulsory practical workshops, including dedicated cadaver workshop, attendance at accredited conferences and meetings and ongoing mentorship. The course requirements can be achieved over one year. Any extension of time will only be granted in exceptional circumstances as approved by the ACCS Council.

Free registration to Cosmetex is included in the Diploma fee and must be attended as part of this training program.

Established in 1999, the Australasian College of Cosmetic Surgery (ACCS) is a not-for-profit, multi-disciplinary fellowship based body of general surgeons, cosmetic surgeons, plastic surgeons, maxillofacial surgeons, dermatologists, ear nose and throat surgeons, ophthalmologists and other doctors and health care practitioners who practice in cosmetic medicine and surgery.

The primary goal of the ACCS is to ensure the safe provision of cosmetic medicine and cosmetic surgical procedures to the Australian general community through the supply of appropriately trained and certified health care practitioners.

The College also seeks to work cooperatively with government and other stakeholders to improve standards and safety and to educate health care consumers and its Fellows and spokespeople are regularly quoted in the media and consulted by federal and state health and consumer regulators.
