History of Drainage Pipes - Earlierdifferent kinds of materials were usedin drainage systems. These includeLead & copper pipes, aluminum, caststone and more. They were earlierused but nowadays more reliablematerials are available at lesser costbecause materials like lead or copperare expensive.

These days a variety of materials areused for drainage systems. Theyinclude cast iron, galvanized iron, ceramic steel pipes, but to name a few. But, the most popular and the mostextensively used pipes of all are PVCor plastic due to the variousadvantages they provide as comparedto other drainage pipes.

Benefits of PVC Pipes - PVC or Polyvinyl

chloride have a lot of advantages as compared

to most of the materials be it galvanized iron,

ceramic, cast iron pipes or others. These are

extremely light in weight and hence can be

easily transported and installed. The unique

feature of these pipes is their flexibility and

robustness. These pipes are highly durable and

have good resistance to fire and are known to

be self extinguishing. Apparently, most of the

drainage pipes are said to have a life span of

between 40 to 100 years. PVC is a non toxic

material and can be safely used. It is also a good

insulator as it does not conduct electricity.

Hence, PVC pipes account to more than 75% of

the waste water mains and other drainage

systems. There are types in plastic drainage

pipes other than PVC also.
