It’s been a very positive year for WomenVenture as we continue to serve our clients through our Entrepreneurship Pathways program to launch or expand women-owned businesses. Over 1,000 women walked through our doors in pursuit of their entrepreneurial dreams. Women like Yolanda Maxwell, who needed a loan and legal assistance to grow her daycare business, Vuthy Devalla, who wanted training to refine the business plan for her bakery, and Anna Tsantir, who came to us for the resources she needed to grow her green cleaning service. These are just a few of the women whose businesses we were able to impact.

Two key initiatives contributed to our clients’ success this year. In September of 2015, we launched our pilot program Scale Up! Twin Cities, funded by the Women’s Economic Security Act. This 8-month program was designed to provide established women-owned businesses with the resources needed to scale their revenues exponentially. After only 13 months, the 23 women who participated in this program surpassed the 2-year goals the state of Minnesota set for them, generating 64 new jobs paying an average wage of $24 an hour, and accessing over $4M in capital to fuel their growth.

Last year, we were 1 of only 3 Women’s Business Centers in the country chosen to participate in the WeLend initiative sponsored by Sam’s Club. This program trained us in a transformative lending methodology to put capital into the hands of the women who need it most—women with little to no wealth, who have endured the devastation of racism, poverty, divorce, illness, and the great recession—and unfortunately have the low credit scores to prove it. This lending program has given us the tools to change these women’s lives through the power of capital.

Through our training, business consulting, and lending programs, we helped women launch or enhance 614 small businesses this year that produced $47.5 million in gross sales and created or retained 1,319 jobs. We provided 20 new client businesses with loans totaling $594,485. We also partnered with banks to provide our clients access to an additional $5.3M in capital. Most exciting of all, our women business owners created jobs that paid a median wage of $27 per hour!

For every dollar you invested in WomenVenture’s clients last year, they returned $20 back to the local economy. Your support of our work is truly making a difference and we thank you for that. LoansWe are an SBA, CDFI, DEED, and WeLend loan provider. We provide micro-loans up to $50,000 for qualified borrowers to help women entrepreneurs overcome obstacles to accessing credit. Loans were dispersed to 20 new clients with an average loan size of $29,700. Our clients accessed $594,485 in loan capital and an additional $5,299,515 in facilitated outside capital in partnership with banks.
