• 1-2.2 Illustrate the major structures of plants (including stems, root, leaves, flowers, fruits, and seeds).
• 1-2.3Classify plants according to their characteristics (including what specific type of environment they live in, whether they have edible parts, and what particular kinds of physical traits they have).
• 1-2.4 Summarize the life cycle of plants (including germination, growth, and the production of flowers and seeds).
• 1-2.5 Explain how distinct environments throughout the world support the life of different types of plants.
1-2 The student will demonstrate an understanding of the special characteristics and needs of plants that allow them to survive in their own distinct environments.
First Grade ELA & ISTE Standards
Day 2
Plant Parts
ABC Note Taking
In the Learning Commons:
1. Librarian shows that “Note
taking is as easy as A-B-C”
Day 2
Plant Parts
ABC Note Taking
In the Learning Commons:
2. Librarian shows Brain Pop Jr. video
Parts of a Plant
3. Librarian stops video after each
question on the Brain Pop Jr. video
4. Students and librarian find facts
that answer that question
Day 2
Plant Parts
ABC Note Taking
In the Learning Commons:
5. Students write facts in research
post-it notebook using ABC
note taking
Success Story
After teaching ABC note taking, a
student decided (on her own) to
practice at home with her book
about sea turtles. How excited we
were to see her notes!
Day 3
Plant Life Cycle
In the Learning Commons:
• Librarian reviews note taking and what they discovered about plant parts
• Librarian adds D to ABC note taking -(Diagrams and Drawings)
• Librarian uses same strategy as yesterday, but uses a www.readinga-z.com e-book A Seed Grows
Day 3
Plant Life Cycle
In the Learning Commons:
• As a class, students continue taking notes
in their post-it research notebook
Day 4
Less Guidance
In the Learning Commons:
• Librarian reviews what has already been
learned and ABC note taking
• Students are divided into two groups:
• E-book group
• Print book group
Day 4
Less Guidance
In the Learning Commons:
• Students use librarian-selected nonfiction
books and the www.readinga-z.com e-
book What Comes from Plants to continue
taking notes
Day 4
Less Guidance
In the Learning Commons:
• Notes will focus on:
• How do humans use plants?
• What are some plants we eat?
• What does a plant need to survive?
• What are some different types of plants?
Day 5
On Your Own
In the Learning Commons:
• Day 4 activities are duplicated but groups
are switched
• Students are divided into two groups:
• E-book group
• Print book group
Day 6
Organizing Notes
In the Classroom:
• Students organize notes into these six categories:
• Different types of plants
• Parts of plants
• Life cycle of a plant
• Plant needs
• Edible plants
• Plant uses
Day 7-10
Completing Projects
In the Classroom or Learning Commons:
• Students create projects matching their topics:
• Different types of plants – Venn Diagram app
• Parts of plants – diagram using iBooks Author
• Life cycle of a plant – video using sonic pics or explain everything
• Plant needs – video using morfo
• Edible plants – table using numbers or table in pages
• Plant uses – pic collage and voice record pro
Day 7-10Plant uses – Pic Collage and Voice Record Pro
• Students will use Pic Collage to find pictures of ways plants are used
• Open a template which matches the number of pictures
• Put pictures in
• Label if time
• Save pic collage to Dropbox (1 Plants)
• Extra – Record voices telling the different ways plants are used
Day 7-10
Edible plants - Table in Pages
• Using the template in Pages, add foods that come from the different parts of plants
• Find pictures of each plant using a Google Image search
• COPY the picture found on Google
• PASTE the picture into the table
• Safe as PDF in Dropbox (1 Plants)
Day 7-10
Plant needs – Video using Morfo
• First write a script of what plants need to survive
• Find a picture of a plant using Google Image search
• Save the picture to the iPad
• Open Morfo, insert plant picture in Morfo, bring picture to life
• Record from your script telling what plants need to survive
• Safe video, insert in DropBox (1 Plants)
Day 7-10Life cycle of a plant – Video using Explain Everything
• Open Explain Everything
• Choose the 2nd icon(document with plus sign – New
Project from Images)
• Insert pictures of plant life cycle in order
• Record voice on each page explaining the steps
• Export movie to camera roll
• Save in DropBox (1 Plants)
Day 7-10Parts of plants – Diagram using iBooks Author on MacBooks
