"NO SHADE AREA":SHADE SAILS, BY THE PHYSICS OF DESIGN, REQUIRE A CURVED EDGE - A CATERNARY CURVE. THUS A SHADE SAILEDGE WILL HAVE A CURVE DEPTH WHICH IS APPROXIMATELY 8 TO 10% OF ITS LENGTH. THIS WILL CREATE A "NO SHADE AREA" BETWEEN TWO ADJACENT BUT NOT OVERLAPPING SHADE SAILS.
GENERAL NOTES:
1. READ STRUCTURAL DRAWINGS IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE OTHER CONTRACT DOCUMENTS.
2. DO NOT RELY ON DRAWINGS UNLESS THEY ARE SIGNED AND SEALED.

12. CONTRACTOR RESPONSIBLE FOR OBTAINING ALL REQUIRED UTILITY LOCATES PRIOR TO CONSTRUCTION. ANY UTILITIY LOCATIONS NOTED ON DRAWING ARE APPROXIMATE AND SHALL BE VERIFIED BY CONTRACTOR.
FOUNDATIONS:
1. FOUND ALL FOOTINGS ON NATURALLY CONSOLIDATED, UNDISTURBED SOIL CAPABLE OF SAFELY SUSTAINING 150 kPa (3000 psf) OR BEDROCK CAPABLE OF SUSTAINING 300 kPa (6200 psf). BEARING CAPACITY SHALL BE CONFIRMED BY CBO OR ENGINEER.
2. THE FOLLOWING SOIL CONDITIONS HAVE BEEN ASSUMED AND ARE TO BE CONFIRMED BY A GEOTECHNICAL ENGINEER PRIOR TO CONSTRUCTION. NOTIFY ENGINEER IMMEDIATELY IF ACTUAL CONDITIONS DIFFER FROM THOSE ASSUMED:
UNIT WEIGHT OF COHESIONLESS SOIL, 20 kN/m³ (130 pcf)ANGLE OF INTERNAL FRICTION, 26°RANKINE PASSIVE EARTH PRESSURE, Kp 2.5
3. CONCRETE FOUNDATION TO BE EXCAVATED BY HYDROVAC OR AUGER. IF FOUNDATION IS AUGERED, ENSURE INTEGRITY OF SIDE WALLS PRIOR TO PLACING CONCRETE. IF BEDROCK IS ENCOUNTERED, BREAK OUT ROCK AND FILL ALL VOIDS AFTER FOUNDATION IS INSTALLED.
4. PROTECT SOIL FROM FREEZING ADJACENT TO AND BELOW ALL FOOTINGS DURING CONSTRUCTION.
5. ANCHOR RODS TO BE ASTM A36 ROUND BAR STOCK (Fy = 248 MPa) OR CSA-G40.21 GRADE 300 W (Fy = 300 MPa).
STRUCTURAL STEEL:
1. HSS STEEL SHALL CONFORM TO THE REQUIREMENTS OF CSA SPECIFICATIONS S16.1(LATEST EDITION) AND CSA SPECIFICATIONS G40.21, TYPE 350W (LATEST EDITION) FOR BEAMS, 350W FOR HSS (CLASS C), AND 300W FOR PLATES.
2. THE WELDING SHALL CONFORM TO THE REQUIREMENTS OF CSA STANDARD W59 (LATEST EDITION) AND THE WELDING COMPANY AND WELDERS SHALL BE QUALIFIED UNDER THE REQUIREMENTS OF CSA STANDARD W57 (LATEST EDITION) FOR THE APPROPRIATE POSITION.
3. STRUCTURAL STEEL TO BE HOT DIP GALVANIZED IN ACCORDANCE WITH CAN/CSA G164 OR POWDER COATED.
4. IF COLUMN IS FASTENED TO FOOTING WITH BASE PLATE CONNECTION, DRAIN HOLES NEAR BASE OF COLUMNS ARE RECOMMENDED TO PREVENT ACCUMULATION OF CONDENSATION (MIN. 2 PER COLUMN).
5. ALL COLUMNS TO BE INSTALLED VERTICALLY PLUMB UNLESS OTHERWISE SPECIFIED.
DESIGN INFORMATION:
1. THE SAIL IS NOT DESIGNED TO SUPPORT SNOW LOADS, AND MUST BE REMOVED DURING THE WINTER SEASON.
2. SHADE SAIL STRUCTURE HAS NOT BEEN DESIGNED FOR SEISMIC LOADING AS BREAKAWAY CONNECTIONS HAVE LIMITED FORCES APPLIED TO SUPPORTS AND ADJACENT STRUCTURES.
3. TENSION CABLES AND HARDWARE MUST BE MONITORED AND ADJUSTED PERIODICALLY BY COMPETENT TECHNICIANS TO ENSURE THAT SHADE SAILS REMAIN TAUT TO PREVENT FLAPPING OF THE SAIL.
4. ALL MATERIALS AND WORKMANSHIP SHALL BE SUPPLIED BY SHADE SAILS CANADA INC. ANY SUBSTITUTION OF MATERIAL, HARDWARE OR CONSTRUCTION METHODS MUST BE APPROVED IN WRITING BY GM BLUEPLAN LIMITED AND SHADE SAILS CANADA INC. FAILURE TO DUE SO RENDERS THIS DESIGN INVALID.
5. ALL CONNECTION HARDWARE FOR SHADE SAIL TO BE STAINLESS STEEL GRADE 316. DESIGN OF SHADE SAIL CONNECTIONS BY OTHERS.
COLD WEATHER REQUIREMENTS:
THE FOLLOWING COLD WEATHER REQUIREMENTS SHALL APPLY WHENEVER THE AIR TEMPERATURE IS AT OR BELOW 5°C, OR WHEN THERE IS A PROBABILITY OF ITS FA LLING BELOW 5°C WITHIN 24 HOURS OF PLACING. NO COLD WEATHER CONCRETE WORK SHOULD BE DONE WITHOUT APPROVAL BY THE STRUCTURAL ENGINEER.
1. ALL COLD WEATHER CONCRETING SHALL BE COMPLETED IN ACCORDANCE WITH CAN/CSA A23.1-04.
2. ALL MATERIALS AND HEATING EQUIPMENT NEEDED FOR ADEQUATE PROTECTION AND CURING SHALL BE ON HAND AND READY FOR USE BEFORE PLACEMENT IS STARTED. PROTECTION SHALL BE PROVIDED BY MEANS OF HEATED ENCLOSURES, COVERINGS, INSULATION, OR A SUITABLE COMBINATION OF THESE METHODS.
3. ALL AGGREGATES AND WATER SHALL BE PRE-HEATED. ALL FORMS, FILL AND GROUND WITH WHICH THE CONCRETE IS IN CONTACT OR IS CALCULATED TO COME IN CONTACT WITH SHALL BE DEFROSTED. STEEL REINFORCEMENT AND AGGREGATES SHALL BE PROTECTED BY ADEQUATE MEANS TO PREVENT FORMATION OF AN ICE FILM.
4. ALL CONCRETE SHALL HAVE A TEMPERATURE BETWEEN 10°C AND 25°C WHEN PLACED IN THE FORMS. REFER TO CAST-IN-PLACE CONCRETE NOTES FOR CURING TYPES. MAINTAIN THE FOLLOWING CONCRETE TEMPERATURES DURING CURING:· CURING TYPE 1 - 10°C FOR 3 DAYS (OR UNTIL 40% OF SPECIFIED STRENGTH IS OBTAINED)· CURING TYPE 2 - 10°C FOR 10 DAYS (OR UNTIL 70% OF SPECIFIED STRENGT H IS OBTAINED)
5. ALL CANVAS OR OTHER PROTECTIVE COVERING SHALL BE KEPT CLEAR OF ALL CONCRETE IN ORDER TO PERMIT FREE CIRCULATION OF AIR ALL AROUND ALL WALLS, COLUMNS, AND OVER THE TOPS OF ALL SLABS.
6. THE HEATING PROTECTION SHALL NOT BE COMPLETELY REMOVED UNTIL THE CONCRETE HAS COOLED TO A MAXIMUM TEMPERATURE DIFFERENTIAL BETWEEN THE CONCRETE AND AIR TEMPERATURE OF 12°C.
7. THE CONTRACTOR IS TO PROTECT ALL FOUNDING SOIL FROM FREEZING DURING THE CONSTRUCTION PERIOD. THIS INCLUDES FOOTINGS THAT HAVE BEEN CAST.
CAST-IN-PLACE CONCRETE PLACEMENT:
1. ALL CONCRETE MATERIALS, FORMWORK, TOLERANCES AND CONSTRUCTION SHALL CONFORM TO CAN/CSA A23.1-19/A23.2-19.
2. REINFORCING STEEL BARS SHALL BE DEFORMED BILLET STEEL BARS, GRADE 400R CONFORMING TO CAN/CSA G30.18-09 (R2014), UNLESS NOTED.
3. ALL REINFORCING BARS SHALL BE SECURELY TIED, SUPPORTED IN THE FORMS AND SPACED WITH STANDARD ACCESSORIES SO THAT THERE IS NO MOVEMENT DURING CONCRETE PLACEMENT.
4. REINFORCING IS TO BE PLACED IN GENERAL ACCORDANCE WITH REINFORCING STEEL INSTITUTE OF CANADA, MANUAL OF STANDARD PRACTICE, CHAPTER 7. ALL SPLICES SHALL BE A CLASS "B" SPLICE, UNLESS OTHERWISE NOTED.
5. ALL REINFORCING STEEL IN PLACE TO BE MADE AVAILABLE FOR INSPECTION BY ENGINEER BEFORE POURING THE CONCRETE. ENGINEER TO BE NOTIFIED WELL IN ADVANCE OF POURING SCHEDULE. ENGINEER TO CARRY OUT INSPECTION AT HIS DISCRETION.
6. PROVIDE PORTLAND CEMENT OF CANADIAN MANUFACTURE CONFORMING WITH CSA/CAN A3000-18, TYPE 10.
7. PROVIDE CLEAN, UNCOATED SAND AND COARSE AGGREGATES FROM APPROVED SOURCES WHICH CONFORM WITH CSA/CAN 3-A2M. NOMINAL SIZE OF COARSE AGGREGATES TO BE 14 mm (9/16") - 20 mm (3/4")
8. CONCRETE SLUMPS SHALL BE CONSISTENT AT 80 mm (3") ± 20 mm (3/4"). ADMIXTURES, WHERE APPROVED BY THE ENGINEER, SHALL CONFORM TO CSA STANDARD CAN 3-A266M, AND MAY BE USED TO INCREASE THE SLUMP ABOVE THIS VALUE.
9. CURE CONCRETE FOR A MINIMUM OF SEVEN DAYS (CONTINUOUS WET CURE).
10. DO NOT LOAD STRUCTURE UNTIL CONCRETE HAS REACHED 70% OF THE 28 DAY DESIGN STRENGTH OR 7 DAYS, WHICH EVER IS LONGER.
11. CONCRETE SHALL HAVE A MINIMUM 28 DAY COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH OF 25 MPa (3600 psi).PROVIDE 4%-7% AIR ENTRAINMENT. SLUMP SHALL BE 80 mm (3") ± 20 mm (3/4") AND 0.55 MAX. WATER TO CEMENT RATIO.
DESIGN PARAMETERS:
1. DESIGN OF THE POST AND FOUNDATION IS BASED ON THE LIMITING CAPACITY OF THE BREAKAWAY HARDWARE. THE ULTIMATE BREAKING LIMIT OF CONNECTION HARDWARE SHALL NOT EXCEED 1000 lb (4.6 kN). BREAKING CAPACITY SPECIFIED BY SHADE SAILS CANADA.
2. DEFLECTION LIMIT FOR POST UNDER DESIGN LOADING: L/100.
3. FACTOR OF SAFETY FOR OVERTURNING OF FOUNDATION > 1.50.
