RootsMost roots act as anchors to keep

the plant in the ground.

Roots take in water and minerals from the soil through tiny root hairs.

Different roots are also adapted to their different environments.

Some roots spread out in search of water in places where it rains often such as in a rain forest.

• Some roots grow deep into the ground in search of water in places where it rains very little such as a desert.

Special Roots

• These roots begin on a stem rather than below the ground. They are used for support to prop or brace up the tree.

Storage Roots

Some plants are able to store food in their roots for later use.

People grow these plants to eat such as sweet potatoes, carrots, beets, and radishes.
