Plans Approved for Second 1.1 Million Square Foot Warehouse at Uline’s Corporate Campus

On August 11, the Plan Commission considered and approved Site and Operational Plans for Uline to construct a second 1.1 million square foot warehouse at their Corporate Campus. The new warehouse will be located at 12575 Uline Drive and will support Uline’s ongoing business growth.

The facility is expected to operate 24 hours per day, seven days per week with approximately 350 full-time employees upon start-up. Roughly 100 employees are expected to work from 32,000 square feet of office space inside the new warehouse facility, while 250 are expected to work in the warehouse over

three shifts. The company anticipates future employee growth at this facility.

Between 300 and 350 vehicle trips and 100 inbound and outbound truck trips are expected at the new warehouse daily. Access to the new warehouse is being proposed off of both County Highway Q and County Highway U.

Plans for the second warehouse are consistent with the Conceptual Plan that had been conditionally approved by the Village Board in October of 2010. Community Development Director Jean Werbie-Harris commented, “Uline has been an amazing corporate citizen, and we truly value their investment and participation in both our community and the entire region.” o

Plans Approved for Caterpillar College PreschoolOn Monday, August 11, the Pleasant Prairie Plan Commission considered and approved Site and Operational Plans and a Conditional Use Permit for Caterpillar College. Caterpillar College Preschool has plans to relocate from its current location in northern Kenosha to an existing building just east of Green Bay Road and south of Highway 50 (8411 Old Green Bay Road).

The academically focused preschool has plans to relocate to an existing building in early September to coincide with the start of the 2014/2015 school year. The building is currently being operated as a church and was previously operated as a childcare facility. No interior or exterior modifications have been proposed at the facility.

During the school year, the facility will operate between 6:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. with an anticipated 70 students. During the summer months, the facility will operate between 7:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. with an estimated 50 children. Caterpillar

College employs a part-time staff of seven. It is expected to grow to a part-time staff of nine or ten in the short term. o

Village Shred and Recycle DaySaturday, September 13 from 9:00 a.m. to noonOn Saturday, September 13 between 9:00 a.m. and noon, Village residents are invited to bring unwanted personal documents to the Roger Prange Municipal Center, located at 8600 Green Bay Road, for on-site destruction.

Residents may bring as many personal documents as they can carry for on-site destruction by Iron Mountain. Iron Mountain provides trucks with custom-built shredders that can efficiently destroy confidential paper documents and CDs. This service is free of charge for Pleasant Prairie residents.

Why Shred Your DocumentsDestroying old documents containing personal information can be a simple and important step towards protecting yourself from fraud and identity theft. It prevents your confidential and personal information from falling into the wrong hands after you dispose of it. After destroying your documents on-site, Iron Mountain will recycle all of the shredding it collects into a variety of paper products.

More InformationFor more information, please contact the Public Works Department at

925.6700 or email [email protected]. To learn more about Iron Mountain, visit www.ironmountain.com. o

The Village would like to thank those who took the time to visit Open Village Hall earlier this summer and offer potential names for the newest Village Park. Those responding submitted a total of seven potential names for the newest park, with variations of “Brookside Gardens Park” receiving the most support.

Staff presented the feedback received to the Village Park Commission on August 5. The Park Commission recommended that the Village Board consider the name that received the most support, a name that reflects the name of the subdivision in which it is located. The Village Board, on August 18, concurred with the feedback and the Commission’s recommendation.

In relation to the leaf burning topic, staff is continuing work to assemble a plan that will be presented to the Village Board at an upcoming meeting. Agendas for Village Board and Commission meetings are available online at PleasantPrairieOnline.com. Watch PleasantPrairieOnline.com for the next topic to be posted to Open Village Hall. Once posted, an email will be sent to those who are registered through the forum. The Village would like to thank you again for sharing your feedback. o

Brookside Gardens Park Selected as Name for Newest Village Park Both anti-drug forces and environmental

activists are encouraging people to properly dispose of unused pharmaceuticals. Disposing of pharmaceuticals can make them inaccessible to children or addicts, while disposing of them correctly, keeps them from further contaminating our local drinking water supply.

A permanent medication drop box (available 24/7) is located in the lobby of the Pleasant Prairie Police Department at 8600 Green Bay Road. A list of acceptable items is printed on the outside of the drop box (you should not deposit inhalers, needles or sharps in the box - see PleasantPrairieOnline.

Throughout the Village, you may see signs indicating a presence of a Neighborhood Watch program. Neighborhood Watch is one of the most effective crime prevention programs a community can embrace, and it doesn’t take much time or effort on the part of residents to start one on your street.

What’s Involved In Neighborhood WatchThe program relies on a self-organized group of neighbors who share information with each other and with police about what they see going on in their neighborhood. Police also share ideas that homeowners can use to help deter criminals from targeting their neighborhood. The shared knowledge keeps both neighbors and police alert to potential problems, therefore reducing the opportunity for crimes to occur.

Organizing a Neighborhood Watch on your street begins with neighbors getting to know one another and sharing information about what they’ve seen happening. Because it is a grassroots style program, there is no set process in place or requirement for how neighbors communicate or how often. Here are some general steps you can take if you think you might have an interest in establishing a Neighborhood Watch on your street:

1. Contact the Pleasant Prairie Police Department at 694.7353 to let us know that you might have an interest. We will answer any questions you might have about what’s involved.

2. Collect names and contact information from your other neighbors who would like to stay in the loop (address, phone, email address). A Block Captain can use this contact information to share Neighborhood Watch updates.

3. Set a date for a start-up meeting between your neighborhood/street and the Police Department. We’ll send an officer out to talk through some tips you can use to deter crime on your street and to answer questions about Neighborhood Watch and what types of activities to watch for.

4. Choose a Block Captain to keep the program going on your street. Block Captains keep neighbors informed when something unusual is taking place in the neighborhood and touch base with the Police Department.

What’s Involved in Starting a Neighborhood WatchPolice Seek Residents Willing to Start a Neighborhood Watch

Because of the grassroots nature of the program, Neighborhood Watch may be different from neighborhood to neighborhood. It may be as casual or organized as you and your neighbors would like. Neighborhood Watch programs simply encourage neighbors to get to know each other, to watch out for each other, and to call the police when something just doesn’t seem right.

The Pleasant Prairie Police Department is seeking residents who are interested starting or reviving a Neighborhood Watch program on your street. If you are interested in helping to start a Neighborhood Watch on your street, please call the Pleasant Prairie Police Department at 694.7353 or email [email protected], and tell us that you’d like to learn more about Neighborhood Watch. o

Local Scouts Complete Community-Minded Projects in VillageOver the past many years, our community has been the beneficiary of multiple projects completed by young men as part of their journey towards becoming an Eagle Scout. Eagle Scout is the highest rank attainable as part of the Boy Scouts of America program. In order to earn this status, youth must earn multiple merit badges, and demonstrate good character, service, and leadership. Scouts must demonstrate these qualities through the planning, organization, leadership and management of a community service project.

The images at the left show four recent community service projects completed in Pleasant Prairie by young men working towards the rank of Eagle Scout. These young men collaborated with Pleasant Prairie’s Public Works Department in order to identify project ideas and to obtain necessary approvals and/or advice.

The top image at the left shows a shelter constructed by Ben Borchardt along the Prairie Farms Trail (between Prairie Springs Park and County Highway C) during 2014. The second image at left shows a handicap accessible fishing pier constructed by Brian Newberry inside Ingram Park (the pond is filling naturally with storm water and will be stocked once it reaches an adequate depth). The third image shows a shelter constructed by Tim Nolder at Pleasant Prairie’s new dog park inside Ingram Park. The fourth image shows one of multiple benches constructed by Dominic Gemignani inside Ingram Park. The benches honor U.S. veterans from each branch of service.

The Village would like to thank these young men and congratulate them on the amount and the quality of work they put into these community-minded service projects. The Village also wishes to thank and congratulate all Eagle Scouts from prior years who have completed projects throughout the community.

Three additional young men are beginning work on Eagle Scout Projects in the Village. Zach Raetzman plans to build a shelter at the opposite end of the Prairie Farms Trail; Dante Bonaretti plans to build an additional shelter inside the dog park at Ingram Park; and Kevin Koesser plans to install mile marker signs and build trail head signage on the north side of the Prairie Farms Trail. The Village wishes these young men the best in their pursuits. o

Pet Owners’ Help Needed to Improve the Health and Safety of Our Lakes, Rivers and Water ResourcesWhether it’s swimming at Lake Andrea or Lake Michigan beach, fishing, kayaking, or wading in the water, local lakes, rivers and waterways provide people in our community with opportunities for recreation and relaxation. When these recreational resources experience high levels of bacteria (such as E. coli and fecal coliform) or other parasites, they become unsafe for people to use, especially children, the elderly, and people who are not in good health.

According to the 2013-2014 APPA National Pet Owners Survey, approximately 83.3 million dogs are kept as pets by approximately 56.7 million U.S. households. Dogs produce approximately ten million tons of waste each year. Dog waste harbors bacteria such as E. coli and fecal coliform that is spread through feces.

Studies have show that nearly 40% of dog owners do not clean up after their dog. They instead chose to leave their dog’s waste on lawns, beaches, or in public parks, for a variety of reasons. Storm water (rain, melting snow, even water from watering your lawn) then flows over the surface of the land where the waste was left behind and carries harmful bacteria through the storm water drainage systems to our lakes, beaches and places where we walk, wade, swim, fish or kayak.

Dog waste is by no means the only source that pollutes our natural water ways, but it is a substantial one and one that every pet owner can take individual responsibility for. The Village is asking for all pet owners to follow the rules that are in place to keep us safe from E. coli and fecal coliform found in dog feces. Please...

•Alwayscleanupafteryourdog,whetherinyourneighborhood,apark,oratthe localdogpark(dogscangetsickfromplayinginanddrinkingcontaminated wateraswell).

During summer months, staff collects water samples from Lake Andrea and Lake Michigan beaches and submits them to a private lab for testing. Tests determine the level of bacterial contamination in the sample, and the Village then posts the results (along with water temperature) in the News section at PleasantPrairieOnline.com. Results are posted as either safe, swim advisory, or closed.

From time to time, the Village must close a beach (usually Lake Michigan Beach) due to high levels of bacterial contamination. If we do so, we also post signage at the beach. We sincerely thank all those pet owners who follow the rules that help keep our community a safe and healthy place. o

Children’s clothing, shoes and books were donated to the Historical Society by Susan Aedo this summer. The infant sized, hand sewn, white cotton petticoats, dresses and under garments belonged to her great, great, great grandmother, Edith Perkins who lived and grew up in Pleasant Prairie. The dresses and shoes had been stored for years in Susan’s great grandmother’s attic. One infant shoe has a tag attached that reads, “This shoe belonged to Edith Perkins, (Hazel Gleason’s mother), when she was a year old, bought in 1872.”

Four books were also donated. Two reader school books, “The Little Lame Prince” and “Bunny Boy and Grizzly Bear,” with handwritten inscriptions from “Mother” dated 1912 and 1916 respectively. A third book, “Holidays at Roselands”, was one of several books written by Martha Finley. It was dated by the owner, Margaret Eunice Bennett on April 22, 1927.

The fourth donated book, a personal “Inspiration Book” with handwritten words of wisdom from family friends living in various Kenosha County communities, belonged to Laura Hill (b. 1838). One of entries from Belle Scofield of Bristol, Wisconsin was dated December 16, 1889. Belle wrote to Laura Hill, “Is learning your ambition? There is no royal road. Alike the peer and peasant. Must climb to her abode.” Another entry from Daisy Pierce dated February 18, 1891 read, “May peace attend your future hours. And love bestow your faith with flowers. And may you ever have a friend. True as the one these lines have penned.”

The Historical Society is always looking for members who have an interest in researching historical topics. If you would like to become a member of the Historical Society, please contact us at [email protected] or (262) 947-3600. o

Tree Dedication Ceremony

Thank you to all those who joined us for the recent Tree Dedication Ceremony in Ingram Park. On August 3, thirty-five trees were dedicated to each of the Kenosha County service men who lost their lives in the Vietnam war. Speakers also recognized the sacrifices of those who made it home and subsequently dealt with war-related health issues, trauma, and disrespect.

The Village would also like to thank: Kenosha Area Vietnam Veterans, Pleasant Prairie VFW Post 7308, American Legion Post 21, American Legion Riders, Warriors Watch Riders, Bugles Across America, Rachel Rick, Culver’s of Pleasant Prairie, Paielli’s Bakery, Sunnyside Florist, and the families of Kenosha County’s Fallen Heroes. o
