Find a real need.
When there IS a corporate strategic direction…
• It’s about cascading strategy & measuring the implied
performance results
When there ISN’T…
• Choose one known performance problem
• Choose 2 or 3 customer satisfaction drivers: ask customers
• Choose productivity drivers: rework & cycle time

There are only two selection criteria.
The Manager will give his/her time to it.
• That is, they will personally attend all meetings/workshops.
There is time, e.g. by delaying something less important.
• Measures Team members need 2-4 hours per week
• Stay focused on just a few valuable measures!

How many teams at once?
First time through at Fast-Track pace:
• Just 1 or 2 teams.
After you’ve succeeded once or twice:
• Full-time or slower than Fast-Track pace, then up to 3-4 teams
per step per week.
• If you’re doing this part-time, 1 or 2 teams per step per week.

What’s a Measures Team?
A selection of 4 to 6 people who together represent the
business unit or business process you want to PuMP.
They act on behalf of their colleagues to do the grunt work
in developing performance measures.
You will facilitate them through the steps of the PuMP
Blueprint, through a series of workshops or meetings.

Recruiting members.
Volunteers who want to be part of it…
• plus their Manager.
Aim for people who have knowledge of:
• data, work processes, customer needs, existing measures.
Invite, don’t mandate.
Make it clear it’s NOT about measuring them!

Hold the space for engagement and ownership.
Start the meeting with purpose, process, outcomes [15 – 30
minutes]
• Purpose: what struggle does this PuMP technique fix?
• Process: introduce the PuMP technique
• Outcomes: what you’re aiming for (e.g. show a case study)

Hold the space for engagement and ownership.
Most of the meeting is doing it [1.5 – 2.5 hours]
• Be a facilitator.
• Focus the dialogue on filling in the PuMP template.
• Stay focused.
• Aim for a solid draft (NOT perfection).

The goal ISN’T to jump through PuMP hoops.
What results do you want from this PuMP implementation?
• A performance report that people find useful and usable?
• More engagement with the organisation’s goals?
• Getting a real performance improvement?
• A higher percentage of people’s time on priority work?
• A few measures that people feel excited about using?

Describe those results in rich detail.
Write a statement about these results as though they are
already happening. Be sensory specific!!
Hold up another organisation or business unit as a model to
aspire to.
